2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S
With ever-tightening emissions regulations, even Porsche has had to forgo decades of tradition with their legendary large-capacity flat-sixes. But Porsche has had to adhere to the times and turbocharge its new 911 Carrera models, now downsizing to a twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine over the previous Carrera S’s 3.8-litre naturally aspirated screamer.
The benefits are everything, except that inserting a pair of turbos will always impact the sound, so that classic rasp that has defined the marque, is now no longer there.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S is more powerful, faster, better equipped and a far better buy. Everything says this should be a cracker to drive. However, the real question is, can Porsche be forgiven for downsizing its engines to appease ‘greenies’ in their Toyota Priuses.
