Celebrity hair: blonde vs brunette

As Tulisa becomes the latest star to go from brunette to blonde, take a look at other celebrities who have made the switch.
TULISA CONTOSTAVLOS

Tulisa is the latest celebrity to turn from brunette to blonde arriving at the High Court for her sex tape scandal case with a mane of golden curls. Well, gold tinged with orange – the downside of dramatic dye-jobs. Although her hair was overly dark before, we still prefer her as a brunette, she just needs to go for a softer, more golden brown next time.

RIHANNA

Rihanna’s tried nearly every colour of the spectrum on her locks, but after a couple of months of platinum style, she unveiled her newly dark hair to a film premiere just yesterday: a vast improvement on those brassey tones, we say.

JESSICA STAM

Next up on the hair-dying scene, eternally blonde model Jessica Stam has turned to the dark side, and though her pretty face could carry almost anything off, we miss the blue-eyed blonde from before.

CRYSTAL RENN

This model just loves a change. First she goes from plus-size to sample-size, and now she’s ditched her gorgeous shiny black hair for this brassey blonde. A change too far? We think so too.

CHERYL COLE

After public X Factor humiliation and a messy divorce, Cheryl unveiled a new blonde ‘do. Ageing and yellow-y we bet her bosses at L’Oreal were shaking their heads.

AGYNESS DEYN

The cheeky Mancunian model burst onto the scene with her platinum bob and despite dalliances with jet black (and flaming red) she’ll always be a blonde in our eyes.

ABBEY LEE KERSHAW

Much as we loved her girl-next-door mouse, top model Abbey Lee’s bleached blonde tresses suit her rock-chic style.

BEYONCÉ

Any colour in the world wouldn’t taint the Queen of Cool, Beyonce.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

Oh wow… In her WAG glory days VB was a bona fide boob-y blonde, but fast forward a few years and a successful fashion label later, and Beckham’s a leading brunette. Much better.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Though Johansson’s pretty face could carry most colours, that Monroe-esque glamour looks that much better topped off with platinum curls.

CAREY MULLIGAN

Blonde? Brunette? Whichever. Everyone’s favourite actress Carey Mulligan can do no wrong in our eyes!

REESE WITHERSPOON

Experiment as she might, Reese Witherspoon will always be the ultimate blonde.

RACHEL McADAMS

Some people just have all the luck: McAdams is a total beauty both ways.

KYLIE MINOGUE

Eek! That dark brown hair is too severe for pint-sized pop princess Kylie Minogue.

KATY PERRY

A very good example of why those with dark hair should reconsider blonde: it’s called green.

CAMERON DIAZ

Though we loved Cameron’s dalliance with dark locks, she’s the ultimate beach babe and should have blonde locks to match.

JESSICA ALBA

Honey-coloured skin and luscious brown hair, Jessica Alba’s dark Latin colouring needs no messing with.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

‘The Hunger Games’ star dyed her natural blonde locks brown for her turn the film – a move which cost $30,000 – so that she she could get just the right hue of chesnut the first time around.

KATE MOSS

Time might have fooled observers into thinking supermodel Kate Moss is a natural blonde, but that is definitely not the case. Moss embraced her natural hue circa 1999.

SIENNA MILLER

The ultimate blue-eyed blonde, actress Sienna Miller experimented with dark dresses almost 10 years ago. We’re firmly in the blonde is best camp.

CHARLIZE THERON

Hollywood beauty Charlize could probably pull off green hair if she wanted to, but we’re big fans of her beachy-blonde mane.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD

Actress and style chameleon Evan Rachel co-ordinated her dye job to porcelain skin when dark, and warm foundation when blonde. We think her gothic side is the most dramatic.

DREW BARRYMORE

Youthful actress or Hollywood glamazon? Drew’s whole persona changes with a slick of the dye.

Paris Fall/Winter 2011-2012

Paris Fall/Winter 2011-2012

PARIS – FashionTV takes you live to the streets of Paris for Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011/2012 and the sophisticated elegance of shows like Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Viktor & Rolf, Lanvin, Balmain, Yves St. Laurent, and more. VIPs like Nicole Richie, Daisy Lowe, and Kanye West came to the big shows like Jean-Paul Gaultier.

At the Vivienne Westwood show, models’ faces are covered in war paint and the strong women look like warriors in elaborate clothing. Things get even more fiery when we had to the Viktor & Rolf show where models faces are painted blood red and the clothes, in both black and ecru colors, looked like armor on their bodies. “We wanted to create a glamorous fashion crusade,” said Dutch designer Viktor Horsting. Things get playful at Sonia Rykiel, where models drapse down the runway in pinkish-red lips, pink furs, plaid, and prints next to what looks like a wired backyard fence. Rochas is sophisticated and quietly bold as usual. Kenzo, with Arizona Muse headlining, is a steam of a camouflage colors and kaleidoscope prints. Stella McCartney has beautiful form-fitting dresses with billowy sleeves and unique, playful textures. Gareth Pugh is edgy and dark with black leather, bold shoulders, and tough makeup. Balmain brings out big models like Carmen Kass and Freja Beha Erichsen, with bold and futuristic designs. Nina Ricci is pretty in dark, Fall colors. The collection included historical references in unique color combinations. Chloe has a conservative vibe but with color blocking. Yves St. Laurent was sophisticated, with a perverse bourgeois, one audience member describes. It has a slight sex appeal. Valentino, headlined by model Ruby Aldridge, was toned down but beautiful as always with lush fabrics. Jean-Paul Gaultier’s show included special guest, French actress Valerie Lemercier and made a statement when models donned gray wigs like grandmas but wore the designer’s stellar outfits. Gaultier described it as a little girl who wanted to be like their mother, with a 60s and 70s feel. Lanvin’s collection had sort of an outdoorsy Amish meets cowboy feel at first, but quickly picked up with Lanvin’s gorgeous minidresses and skirt suits. Thierry Mugler took our breath away when Lady Gaga smoked a cigarette on stage as other models followed in dark looks.

Appearances: Paloma Faith, Daisy Lowe, La Roux, Hildie Gifstad, Vivienne Westwood, Karlie Kloss, Viktor Horsting, Rolf Snoeren, Sarah Blomqvist, Sonia Rykiel, Ruby Aldridge, Karl Lagerfeld, Monika “Jac” Jagaciak, Kasia Wrobel, Zuzanna Bijoch, Alana Zimmer, Designer for Rochas, Arizona Muse, Melissa Tammerijn, Antonio Marras, Elettra Wiedemann, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Jourdan Dunn, Natasha Poly, Karmen Pedaru, Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh designer), Freja Beha Erichsen, Magdalena Frackowiak, Carmen Kass, Anabela Belikova, Sasha Pivovarova, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana, Peter Copping, Julia Saner, Ginta Lapina, Daphne Groeneveld, Chloe designer, Ron Wood, Hailey Clauson, Stefano Pilati, Valentino designers, Nicole Richie, Karolina Kurkova, Alber Elbaz, Ken Downing, Lady Gaga, Nicola Formichetti, Anna Dello Russo, Coco Rochas

Maxi dress: see through and on trend

Months ago when we first predicted that the sheer maxi dress would become a women’s statement trend, there were many naysayers. Those people thought it implausible that something both see-through and floor-length would enter the everyday wardrobe. But before long the fall 2011 runways joined the party and then more and more sheer dresses and skirts were spotted on the street. No longer just for models and those with Herculean courage, this fusion of sheer clothing and the maxi skirt stays on trend for fall 2011.

The sheer maxi for autumn / fall ’11

When we first reported of the emergence of this women’s trend, the sheer maxi dress / maxi skirt was rarely seen. How things have changed. The skirts and dresses soon captured the imagination of the fashion forwards everywhere, and when you didn’t see a sheer maxi dress gliding down a fall 2011 runway you saw it on more than a few of the guests inside and the crowds amassed outside.

Autumn / winter catwalks are suitably held in the preceding year’s cold months, and that’s a suitability that showed just how much this women’s fashion statement works to defy practicality and the need for heavy winter fabrics. And from the streets to the catwalk we saw many a way to wear the see-through maxi dress in autumn 2011 and winter 2012:

  • Balance out the cold by pairing it with a warm piece of outerwear – either a cropped jacket or a coat that sits mid-thigh leaving just a train of sheer fabric to spill out from underneath.
  • For a particularly glamorous (or grunge, depending on how you wear it) outerwear option try a fur / faux fur jacket or chubby.
  • Contrast the elegance of the lightweight skirt by paring it down with an oversized parka or knit (a la Max Azria, above).
  • Opt for a heavier, but still see-through, lace version for a unique take.
  • For a 70s fashion revival take go for a full, tiered version with a boho / gypsy feel.

There are no real rules for wearing a sheer long skirt when the warmer weather hits; the lighter fabric and lighter days make for a natural pairing. What we will say, though, is that indulging in the statement look for spring / summer 2011 is far fresher in white or bright colours. Not only is black a heavy colour for sunny days, but come spring 2012 the black sheer maxi will also be feeling a bit done.

Keep your black for winter, or carry it over by pairing it with fresh summer sandals, pops of colour, or lashings of solid metal jewellery for an evening Goddess look – but if you’re going to invest in a new piece all together for spring you’re best off doing so in breezy white or other spring 2012 colors.

Sheer maxi for the modest

Whether for autumn or for spring, you may still have one question: what to wear underneath?

Yes this trend is for something see-through but that doesn’t mean you have to show off your underwear if that’s out of your comfort zone. You can find plenty of version out there made from semi-sheer fabrics that don’t give everything away. You can also get your hands on a take that’s made from lots of gatherings of sheer fabric, adding volume and thickness to an otherwise see-through skirt. Lastly and most commonly find a sheer maxi with a shorter inbuilt slip (or simply add one underneath).
