Hollywood’s 25 most powerful stylists

The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 most powerful stylists and some of their main clients:

(Relaxnews) – After stars including Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams topped best dressed lists during awards ceremony season, the women behind their looks rate highly in an annual ranking by US publication The Hollywood Reporter (THR) of the industry’s 25 most powerful stylists –which this year excludes fashion mogul Rachel Zoe.
After evaluating factors such as clients, visibility during awards season and breadth of influence, THR cites Kate Young, whose patrons include Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, as this year’s most powerful stylist.

The latter wore red Louis Vuitton to the Academy Awards last month and came second in a Twitter best dressed list, according to data based on tweets sent regarding the awards ceremony with the hashtag #BESTDRESSED. Jessica Chastain topped the poll with her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress, although her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who also dresses Viola Davis, Freida Pinto and Jennifer Lawrence, came in fourth place in THR’s list.
Meanwhile, Emma Stone, who impressed at the Oscars in a bow-detail Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown, is styled by Petra Flannery — who takes third place in THR’s compilation. Last year Rachel Zoe, who gained attention in the early 2000s due to her work with the likes of Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie and Keira Knightley, topped THR’s most powerful stylist list. This year Zoe doesn’t feature on the rundown, although this exclusion is explained in an article by THR’s Shirley Halperin.
“Because her success has been so beyond what anyone thought a stylist could achieve, THR decided to recuse her from this year’s list,” wrote Halperin of the stylist who has become a television star and boasts her own multimillion-dollar fashion empire.
The ladies on this year’s list are breaking into the design world too though — Young last year teamed up with designer Lynne Hiriak for the knitwear line Cardigan by Kate Young and Leslie Fremar created a capsule line of basics for Fruit of the Loom.

Not so. “I really don’t want to work in fashion. It’s just not for me,” the 24-year-old Colombia student famously declared in The September Issue. “I respect her, obviously, but it’s just a really weird industry… People in there act like fashion is life. It’s really amusing, but if that’s your career – there are other things out there, seriously. I think I want to be a lawyer.” Still, we’ll never tire of seeing the two in their finest, polishing up the front row.

Twin cuties Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta never fail to cause a stir when out and about with mum Sarah Jessica Parker – despite the actress being candid about the differences between her and her clothes plate alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw. “Bradshaw’s life is nothing – nothing – like mine,” she said in a recent interview with American Vogue. “I loved playing her, and it changed my life in lots of wonderful ways, but I’m not a crazy shoe lady, I don’t think about fashion all day long, although I have a great respect for the industry.” There’s no denying that innate sense of style, however – something we’d be happy to wager is in the genes.

How beautiful is this candid shot of Malia Obama and mumma Michelle Obama? Of course, there’s someone missing from the frame – Malia’s equally stylish older sister, Sacha. The pair have quite the role model in the J.Crew-loving First Lady who admits that, for her, fashion these days is less about fun and more about avoiding blushes: “My day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, ‘What’s the temperature?’ ‘Am I going to be sitting in the grass?’ ‘Will I be playing with kids?’ ‘Can I sit on the floor?’ If I bend over, I’m worrying about that embarrassing shot.”

Before she became a stylish mum, Gwyneth Paltrow was the daughter of one: super-stylish actress Blythe Danner. They’ve been going through a tough time of late, but Demi Moore and her aspiring actress daughter Rumer – her eldest to ex-husband Bruce Willis – have an enviably close relationship (not to mention looks that are more akin to sisters, rather than women separated by a generation). Paula Yates will be forever remembered as an 80s style icon and, although she died while her children were still young, daughters Peaches Honeyblossom and Pixie Geldof have also embraced the world of celebrity, making names for themselves respectively on the London fashion circuit. Earlier this year, Peaches announced that was pregnant to her muso boyfriend Tom Cohen; their baby is due to be born on Paula’s birthday.

There has been much speculation about the length of the glamorous former air hostess’ hemlines but, appropriateness issues aside, there’s no mistaking where Kate gets her fabulous pins from. In her famous pre-wedding interview with her then-husband-to-be, Kate made us all go misty-eyed when she gushed how she’d enjoyed such a happy family life and hoped to replicate that with William. Talk about a fashion fairytale.

No list of stylish mums and daughters would be complete without Hollywood bombshells Goldie Hawn and her super-star daughter, Kate Hudson. Ah, super-stardom. How does Kate cope with it? “If I want to draw attention to myself, put on heels and a tight dress and do my hair up, then I can. But I can also tone it down,” she explained in a 2010 interview with the Daily Telegraph. “For me, I’d go crazy if I couldn’t go out and walk in the streets. I learnt some of that from my mum. She is so recognisable. She’s just so Goldie! When I was a girl I would get embarrassed and say: ‘Mum, put a hat on or something.’”

The blonde, blue-eyed beauty has walked the runways for everyone from Givenchy to Chanel – in contrast to her self-professed ‘tomboy’ of a mother, who once revealed that her young life was spent following “dusty trails and boulder-filled avalanche chutes up to the high places”.

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin

When Jane Birkin gave birth to Charlotte, her daughter with legendary French musician Serge Gainsbourg, they were the Victoria Beckham and Harper Seven of their day (as this beautiful vintage shot testifies). The fashion standing of both maybe indisputable but, in true ultra-cool style, the now grown-up Charlotte is non-plussed by it all: “Style for me is a casual way of putting something on. It’s not thought out but needs to suit your way of life. Now I like wearing the same sweater over and over again, then taking it off when it’s smelly.”

Jessica Alba is famous for her street style and her daughter, Honor Warren, is well on her way to following in her mum’s footsteps. The three-year-old favours girly skirts, denim jackets and is rarely seen without a pair of ballet pumps on her feet. Give it time, though, and she’ll be sporting the skinny jeans that Jess so loves, for sure.

Daisy Lowe and her mother Pearl have long shared a love of fashion – but they have more in common than just looking uber-stylish. And so to another Voguette, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, whose mum is former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Now fully grown up, she has continued into the industry, carving a well-appointed niche for herself both in front of and behind the lens.

Elettra Wiedemann & Isabella Rosselini

With her pixie hair and full lips, Isabella Rosselini epitomised Italian chic in the 80s – and her daughter is busy doing the same in the here and now. Elettra Wiedemann scored her first modelling contract (for Abercrombie & Finch, no less), while still at school, and has starred in Vogue, as well as scoring a season as the face of Salvatore Ferragamo.

2012 Oscars Red Carpet Report Card

Angelina Jolie
Grade: A+

After Angelina Jolie flashed that leg on the red carpet, no one was even paying attention to what the “In the Land of Blood and Honey” director was actually wearing! The actress’ black Atelier Versace gown featured a thigh-slit, which the daring Jolie worked every chance she got throughout the night. At the end of her stems? Salvatore Ferragamo peep-toe pumps.

Gwyneth Paltrow
Grade: D

There were lots of white gowns at the Oscars, but the most unusual one had to be Paltrow’s Tom Ford ensemble. The dress itself was perfectly lovely, but the cape was bizarre. Thankfully, she shed it once she hit the stage to present Best Documentary Feature. Too bad her helmet hair was still there.

Emma Stone
Grade: A

Now that’s a statement dress. Stone hit the Oscars in a Giambattista Valli Couture gown that boasted a high neck with a giant bow. A simple bun and Louis Vuitton jewels rounded out her stylish ensemble.

Sandra Bullock
Grade: B

Sandra Bullock’s white-and-black crepe Marchesa gown was OK at first glance, but looked much better from behind thanks to its beautifully draped back. The actress added some fun to the look with an “I Dream of Jeannie”-esque ponytail.

Jennifer Lopez
Grade: A

The “American Idol” judge dared to bare … and it paid off. Lopez’s plunging Zuhair Murad gown not only caused a ruckus on the red carpet, but during the Oscar broadcast as well. When she was onstage presenting with Cameron Diaz, the Internet was buzzing about the fact that she had suffered a wardrobe malfunction … but it seems her double-sided tape did its job just fine.

Brad Pitt
Grade: A-

Though he did look pretty spiffy in his Tom Ford tuxedo, the Actor in a Leading Role nom admitted it’s “much easier” for men to get dressed for the Oscars than their female counterparts. It’s probably easier for them to do their hair, too. What did you think of his slicked-back ‘do?

Viola Davis
Grade: A

“The Help” best actress nominee left her wig at home (as she’s been doing quite a bit lately) and showed off her newly dyed short red locks along with a gorgeous green Vera Wang gown, which featured a jewel-encrusted neckline. Davis’ best accessory? Her super-toned arms!

Cameron Diaz Grade: B+

The “Bad Teacher” actress flaunted her buff arms and fab physique in a strapless silk Gucci Premiere gown. But the big question is … are you feeling her newly cropped locks?

Octavia Spencer
Grade: A

Before she nabbed the award for Actress in a Supporting Role, “The Help” star had already won on the red carpet in an off-white jeweled Tadashi Shoji gown that gathered at the waist, paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Judith Leiber jewels. Although Octavia had three different options for her Oscars look, she wisely went with the Japanese designer, who has dressed her for each of the awards shows this season.

Sean “Diddy” Combs
Grade: A

Before he even hit the red carpet, the music mogul, who executive-produced the Best Documentary winner “Undefeated,” was spotted being primped by two assistants (one armed with a lint roller), outside his limo. All the extra effort was worth it: Diddy looked uber-dapper in his tux.

Penelope Cruz
Grade: B

The Spanish siren looked Jacqueline Kennedy-esque as she floated down the red carpet in an organza Giorgio Armani off-the-shoulder gown.

Shailene Woodley
Grade: C-

The young star of “The Descendants” took a risk when she donned this long-sleeve white Valentino Couture gown, which she topped off with a sleek bun and Harry Winston gems. While she said the dress was “so incredibly” her, we think it drastically ages the 20-year-old starlet.

Kristen Wiig
Grade: B

The “Bridesmaids” star — who was nominated for writing the comedy’s screenplay — glammed it up in a nude J.Mendel gown and Neil Lane bangles. We just wish that Wiig would have done something with her hair, which had very little body to it and dressed down the entire look.

The Dictator
Grade: F (for funny)

What else would you expect from Sacha Baron Cohen in character as “The Dictator”? The actor sported a uniform by John Galliano, socks from Kmart, and scored the biggest laughs of the night when he spilled the “ashes” of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il all over an unsuspecting Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

Jessica Chastain
Grade: A-

“The Help’s” best supporting actress nominee looked absolutely lovely in her romantic black-and-gold Alexander McQueen gown, which she accessorized with loose red tresses and $2 million worth of yellow Harry Winston diamonds.

Stacy Keibler

Grade: C+

George Clooney’s gal pal may be gorgeous, but she failed to impress in her gold lame off-the-shoulder Marchesa creation and lackluster blond locks.

Melissa McCarthy
Grade: D

While we adore the funny lady, she majorly disappointed in her custom Marina Rinaldi gown. Don’t you think the best supporting actress nominee could have done a little better when choosing the perfect dress for her big night?

Michelle Williams
Grade: B

It looks kind of red to us, but the “My Week With Marilyn” star and best actress nominee described her chiffon Louis Vuitton dress as “coral” in an interview with Ryan Seacrest. Whatever the color, we could have done without the silver little-girl bow adornment.

Busy Phillips
Grade: C-

Williams’ BFF, “Cougar Town” actress Busy Phillips, was a mismatched mess in her gray Dolce & Gabbana gown, hot pink heels, and green-and-blue earrings.

Meryl Streep
Grade: B+

“The Iron Lady” must have had an inkling she was going to win the Best Actress award because she matched the color of her gold lame draped Lanvin gown to Oscar himself. During her acceptance speech, Streep (in vintage Fred Leighton earrings) thanked her colleagues and friends “for this inexplicably wonderful career.”

Milla Jovovich
Grade: A

The “Resident Evil” actress blew everyone away when she arrived wearing this gorgeous white Elie Saab Couture one-shoulder gown. Soft locks, red lips, Jacob & Co. jewels, and an Edie Parker box clutch perfectly complemented her ensemble.

Anna Faris
Grade: B+

The comedic actress went glam in a long-sleeve sequined Diane von Furstenburg gown and brand-new bobbed hairdo with bangs, giving the “What’s Your Number?” star a sultry — albeit older-than-usual — look.

Natalie Portman
Grade: B

What a difference a year makes! At the 2011 Oscars, where she won a statue for best actress, Portman was very pregnant with her son, Aleph. This year, she didn’t have to worry about dressing a baby bump, and selected a red polka dot 1954 Christian Dior Haute Couture vintage gown and sparkling Harry Winston jewels for the Hollywood event.

Glenn Close
Grade: A

She plays a woman pretending to be a man in “Albert Nobbs,” but legendary actress Glenn Close looked feminine and fabulous in a dark green strapless Zac Posen gown paired with a matching blazer adorned with satin lapels. Feathered hair and drop earrings completed her look.

Rose Byrne
Grade: A

The “Bridesmaids” beauty shimmered in her black sequined one-shoulder Vivienne Westwood dress. A sleek bob, Jimmy Choo heels, and Chanel Fine Jewelry completed her all-around classy look.

Kelly Osbourne
Grade: D

Yep, Kelly’s still rocking the grayish-purple hair and we have no idea why. The E! correspondent happened to be wearing a black Badgley Mischka gown with emerald-colored accents, but it almost doesn’t matter with an awful coif like that.

Judy Greer
Grade: A-

“The Descendants” actress went modern glam in this Monique Lhuillier design, which created killer curves for the petite star. Too bad Greer’s hair was so boring!

Tina Fey
Grade: A

The “30 Rock” star looked nothing like her dowdy character Liz Lemon at the Oscars! Fey, sporting a glam updo, put her best food forward in a midnight blue Carolina Herrera gown with peplum detail. Light blue Bulgari chandelier earrings completed her chic ensemble.

Ellie Kemper
Grade: B+

We don’t usually think of Ellie Kemper as being super sexy, but she certainly played the part in this strapless Armani Prive gown, which she described as “glittery rust.” Though the color perfectly matched her fiery-hued hair, the “Bridesmaids” actress’ blunt bangs could have used a bit of a trim, no?

Jonah Hill
Grade: B-

“Moneyball’s” best supporting actor nominee dared to be different by sporting a black-on-black tuxedo for the Academy Awards. Do you think he successfully pulled off the look?

Maya Rudolph
Grade: C

Unfortunately, Maya Rudolph’s plum Johanna Johnson dress — with its bejeweled cap sleeves and belt — didn’t seem like the perfect fit for the funny woman and “Bridesmaids” star.

Rooney Mara
Grade: A-

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” actress rocked a delicate white Givenchy Couture gown with a train from the designer’s Spring 2009 collection. Mara decided to forgo any accessories and simply went with her usual dramatic red lips and pulled-back hair.

Melanie Griffith
Grade: B

The 54-year-old actress was a sophisticated lady in a one-shoulder black gown by Yves Saint Laurent.

The crass “Bridesmaids” actress cleaned up quite nicely for the Oscars in her princess-like pale pink gown, which she accessorized with Simon G. Jewels.

Last year’s best supporting actress Oscar winner bombed in this ill-fitting, belted, black-and-gold sequined Reem Acra creation, which she paired with Jimmy Choo shoes.

Missi Pyle
Grade: B

“The Artist” actress Missi Pyle popped a pretty pose in her sky blue Valentina Delfino strapless frock featuring a starburst belt embellishment. And her gown — made of organic silk and recycled polyester — didn’t just look good, it was good for the environment, too! Though Pyle wasn’t up for an award, her dress won the annual Red Carpet Green Dress contest.

Pharrell Williams
Grade: B-

Pharrell — who actually served as a music consultant for the night’s telecast — is known for his sense of style, but he donned a tuxedo jacket for the occasion that was a little too small and a velvet bow tie that was a little too big.

Leslie Mann
Grade: B+

The “Knocked Up” actress decided to forgo comfort for fashion in her super-tight navy Roberto Cavalli gown. Mann — who accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Brian Atwood shoes, and a Judith Leiber clutch — joked on the red carpet that she worried she wouldn’t be able to use the restroom all night.

Giuliana Rancic
Grade: B+

The always charming E! correspondent donned a stunning cap-sleeve Tony Ward creation that truly flattered her thin figure. The only negative? Her super-severe hairdo.

Jason Segel
Grade: B

For his first-ever Oscars, the “Muppets” star didn’t disappoint and looked handsome in his tux — but his evening wasn’t without a wardrobe malfunction! Segel, who hit the Academy Awards to support his friend, Best Original Song winner Bret McKenzie, accidentally popped a few buttons off his tuxedo shirt early in the night, but he managed to fix himself up with some double-sided tape he borrowed from Nick Nolte’s date….

Sherri Shepherd

Grade: C

Though we appreciate “The View” co-host’s decision to wear a bold color, her half-sheer gown was way too busy up top and showed off more cleavage than we wanted to see. Sherri could have also benefited from a more supportive bra.

Virginia Madsen Grade: B-

The “Sideways” actress added a splash of color to the red carpet in a purple one-shoulder Kevin Hall ball gown, which she paired with emerald-and-diamond earrings.

Kate Mara

Grade: A-

The “American Horror Story” actress and sister of best actress nominee, Rooney Mara, went for a romantic look in a pale pink beaded Jack Guisso Couture creation, which she accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Brian Atwood heels.

Kelly Ripa Grade: B+

The morning talk show host showed off her teeny-tiny frame in a mint green Carolina Herrera halter dress with a black belt. Before the Oscars, Ripa noted she had three rules for the perfect dress: comfort, a complimentary color, and something that matched her personality. Seems like she succeeded on all counts!

Sarah Hyland
Grade: B-

The “Modern Family” star looked much older than her 21 years in a mauve asymmetrical Alberta Feretti gown, Neil Lane jewels, and Casadei shoes. Do you agree that the dress was a tad matronly for the young actress?

Jane Seymour
Grade: B-

Jane Seymour certainly proved that 61-year-olds can have fab figures too, but her plunging red gown made her look a little bit like a Vegas showgirl.

Julia Ormond
Grade: B-

There’s not much to say about the “My Week With Marilyn” actress’ blah one-shouldered black gown. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t anything to write home about … and neither was her slightly curled hair.

Lea Thompson Grade: B

Actress Lea Thompson — who had a part in last year’s “J. Edgar” — sparkled in this silver empire-waist gown. We wish she’d left the giant wrap at home, though.

Fall 2011 Trend Alert: Leather

You think of leather pants and your mind should directly go back to the late 70’s early 80’s inspiration of biker styles.

However, it is now 2011 and that biker style has evolved and once again become popular. This fashion trend has returned and it has never been trendier.

Bringing us back from this laid-back summer attire we’ve worn, Fall 2011 trends are screaming sleek sophistication.

Fall attire usually consists of darker and more toned down colors…but things are rapidly changing. Color has remained all over the runway allowing you to easily jump into Fall 2011 still wearing bright pants, coats, maxi-dresses, and more.

It’s known that fashion trends come and go allowing you to try something new and add your very own individual style to it.

This leather trend comes in a variety of styles from leather dresses, skirts, coats and of course pants.

Here are my Do’s & Don’ts of Leather.

DON’T

-       Avoid wearing leather on leather. It may be too much. Leather makes a great statement and you want to avoid looking like a dominatrix.

-       Don’t over do it. Leather is already sexy and chic without having to show too much skin. Instead of pairing leather pieces with provocative tops that show too much skin.

-       Don’t go too tight. Leather can be expensive or cheap and some will be unflattering and may not go well with your shape. Be sure before you leave that fitting room that you look good in it.

DO

-       Pair leather pants with trendy blazers or oversized sweaters.

-       Go rocker chic and pair leather ensembles with lightweight tees.

-       Accessorize. Accessories go with ANY outfit. But with leather a certain accessory is key. Layer chains, or chunky necklaces along with boots or shoes that fit your mood.

Hot or not Michelle Yeoh

HOT. Eight years down the road and she has not aged a day. Sporting full-head curls supported with nude make-up, she looks fresh and young (2003).

HOT. Alongside Eva Longoria who sported similar dress and hairdo, Michelle Yeoh stood out with the classic draped metallic dress and choker. Her look here depicts the vintage Chinese empress glamour (2006).

NOT. The color green looks good on her yellow skin, but she should stick with maxi dresses to elongate her height. And the white sandals? Does not belong to the red carpet, unfortunately (2006).

HOT. The sleek ponytail plus the demure gold dress with soft drapes on the neck makes her look like a goddess. It reminds us of the classic glamour look Angelina Jolie pulls off on the red carpets (2006).

NOT. Tail should only exist if the dress sweeps the floor. This dress gives the funny effect of a little dwarf stepping on the dress tail and pulling the front part of it up (2006).

NOT. The dress looks like it is taken from table dressing, the huge red belt is a turn-off. This whole ensemble looks corny for the red carpet (2007).

HOT. This one-sided relaxed hairdo cuts off even more years from the evergreen Michelle Yeoh (2007).

HOT. Looking like an elegant queen, rocking the fur (we hope it is fake!), the choker, and the simple bun. Probably one of her best looks in the red carpet (2008).

HOT and NOT. She pulls off the androgynous off-duty look really well. The jacket, the bootleg denim, the white shirt. Top notch! But the grandma-like dark specs? Not really, Michelle (2008).

HOT. The embellished dress looks gorgeous on her. And by now we realize that updo and maxi dresses work best on her (2008).

NOT. This supposed-to-be-mini dress makes her looks like a wrapped gift. And we have issue with the string necklace. We know it is oriental, but still..not to the red carpet, maybe? (2008)

NOT. We love the Grecian goddess dress with brilliant waist definer, but the lazy hairdo makes the dress looks lazy too. And what’s with the sporty watch? (2009)

HOT. Tangerine makes her look stunning! Brownie points for the updo and floral stitches (2009).

HOT. The twisting pattern on her dress further accentuates her body curves. Kudos! (2009)

HOT. The pine green dress with pleats makes her stands out in the crowd. The solitary diagonal strap is an haute couture detail, too (2009).

NOT. Aww, you are supposed to show off your personality and glam up for a designer event, not be a blue fairy. A non-cakelike dress plus a different colored shoes would be a minimum requirement (2010).

HOT. Michelle dresses young in a simple purple tube dress and gorgeous strappy heels (2010).

HOT. She anticipated looking pale on this salmon dress, and very smartly tricked it with a gorgeous coral choker. The high slit shows how toned Michelle Yeoh is. Fantastic! (2010)

2011 Oscars: Best and Worst Dressed and More on the Red Carpet

The Eight Worst Dressed

8. Sharon Stone

Oh, Sharon Stone. Does she ever look classy? I know some people thought she looked great, but I thought she looked like an aging high-class escort. The hair was too big, the makeup was too heavy (emphasize your eyes OR your lips, Sharon, not both) and the dress somehow reminded me of Cruella Deville.

Grade: C-

7. Jennifer Hudson

This one really breaks my heart, since I’ve always loved Jennifer Hudson and she’s lost all that weight. But this dress just seemed really, really tacky to me. Orange is a hard color to wear, but orange + shiny fabric + lotsa cleavage +gathered at the hip = looking like the school tramp at prom.

Grade: C-

6. Penelope Cruz

Speaking of the school slut at prom…I just can’t get behind Penelope Cruz’s choice. She’s a beautiful woman and I love the color on her, but all those red sequins with all that cleavage just screamed “Open for Business!” to me. I usually complain that Penelope wears too many princess dresses. This time, the pendulum swung too far in the other direction.

Grade: C-

5. Nicole Kidman

From some angles, this gown was actually OK. But most of the time, it was just unflattering. It made her hips look wide and her chest look small, and it kind of looked like it was made from a really fancy bedspread. And then she lost even more points for the garish orange shoes.

Grade: D

4. Marisa Tomei

Here, I suffered from a classic case of raised expectations. I saw a few tweets that Marisa Tomei looked great, but when I caught a glimpse I hated the gown. Where to begin? The neckline is too high and it looks weird. The skirt looks like someone decided to sew half of another gown onto what she was already wearing. Her hair sucks. There’s weird pleating in the hip area. She…well, you get my drift. It’s a fashion fail.

Grade: D

3. Helena Bonham Carter

Sometimes I can rejoice in the wacky wonder that is Helena Bonham Carter, but here she just actually looks like Bellatrix Lestrange. I hate the sleeves, and the corset, and the whole thing really reminds me of the early 90s. Not even mismatched shoes could save this look.

Grade: D-

2. Florence Welch

Her band might be called Florence and the Machine, but her gown looks like it was handmade. In the 1800s. Seriously, did she craft that thing out of curtains and doilies from her grandmother’s apartment? Did she borrow it from her grandmother? Was it her grandmother’s wedding gown? Did someone come over on the Mayflower wearing it? Should I continue asking questions to imply that it looks really, really old?

Grade: F

1. Melissa Leo

Congratulations, Melissa. Not only did you bomb (or F-bomb) your speech, but you kinda sucked at the red carpet too. Apparently she chose this dress based on what her character in The Fighter would have picked. Honestly, I cannot think of a worse possible way to choose a gown for the Oscars than “Hmmm, I wonder what the white trash psycho I brilliant portrayed would have worn?” And why is she channeling Elvis so much? Was she hoping to score a role in a movie playing him the way Cate Blanchett played Bob Dylan? That’s also a terrible way to choose your red carpet looks. Oh, Melissa. You’re a hell of an actress, but you need a new stylist.

Grade: F

YAWN – Three women who bored me to tears

I know Jennifer Lawrence will be at the top of a lot of Best Dressed lists today, but I just can’t get into a girl who wears a gown that looks like a swimsuit. Seriously, from the neck up she looked like a character on Baywatch. There’s simplistic elegance, and then there’s just…nothing. There is just nothing exciting about that dress. Grade: C+

Michelle Williams has been, for better or for worse, adorably quirky. So why the boring T-shirt dress? I feel like I’ve seen that look done better on a million different girls before. Plus it didn’t help that she seemed to be speaking in some kind of put-on accent during her red carpet interviews, which is really lame considering she’s from Montana and was once on Dawson’s Creek. She gets props for bringing the lovable Busy Phillips as her date, though. Grade: C+

Halle Berry. Oh, Halle. Another one who will be at the top of many Best Dressed lists today. But I’m sorry. I am so over Halle Berry. It seems like she wears almost the same dress the every awards show, in either black, brown or champagne. Come on, Halle! Mix it up a little! Grade: B-

Close, But No Cigar

Sometimes a star shows up on the red carpet and you say “Ooh, she looks fantastic!” But as soon as the words are out of your mouth (or entered into Twitter for the world to see) you notice the one thing keeping that celebrity from looking like a million bucks. Here are six women who almost got it right:

Clockwise: Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Annette Bening, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Adams

I wanted to like Sandra Bullock’s gown, I really did. I like her so much as an actress and celebrity, and she looked so fantastic when she was nominated for everything last year. And in theory, this dress was nice. But on TV the top just didn’t fit right, and I couldn’t put her on the Best Dressed list. Sorry, Sandy. We’ll always have 2010. Grade: B-

I liked Reese Witherspoon’s gown, but her hair caused much debate at the party I attended. I thought it looked like Jessica Simpson hair extensions. Another girl pointed out that it was reminiscent of her Legally Blonde character, Elle Woods. Most of Twitter suggested it looked like a Barbie. Whatever it was, it took her look from classic to prom in a bad way. Grade: B-

Not everyone liked Scarlett Johansson’s gown, but I thought it was different and cool and sexy. My problem was with her greasy, stringy hair. Seriously, ScarJo, there is such a thing as too much mousse. Grade: B

Annette Bening has been hit-and-miss all season, and she came really close to a hit here. I like the dress. But something about those lines just ended up being really unflattering. Maybe it was her posture, maybe it was the shiny material. But whatever it was, the camera did not love it. Grade: C

A lot of people really liked Gwyneth’s tinfoil gown, but I had two problems with it. One, the weird slit down the front was way too space-suit. Two, it didn’t fit well and from the right angle really emphasized how flat-chested she is. Grade: C+

Consider Amy Adams to be an honorable mention on my Best Dressed list, because I absolutely loved her gown. The gown was stunning, her hair and makeup were stunning…she was all set to make my top five of the night. And then someone added that necklace. If it was a stylist, he or she should be fired. If it was Amy, she should hire a stylist. Why? Why would anyone think that necklace went with that gown? It’s so unfair! Grade: B- (without the necklace it would have been an A-)

And then there’s Cate…

Some of you may have been thinking “Where is Cate Blanchett? Why wasn’t she on the Worst Dressed list?” Well, she’s not on the Worst list because I think her gown is the epitome of “Close But No Cigar”.

From the waist down, the gown is gorgeous. The color suits her and it’s just bizarre enough to suit her high fashion tastes. Cate Blanchett is one of those people who can pretty much pull off anything on the red carpet. In fact, if anyone could have pulled this off it would have been her. Unfortunately, no one could pull this off.

From the neck up? Well, first of all the gown looks like it has a disease. A fashion STD, if you will. I just hope it wasn’t contagious. And then there’s the fact that it is circling her chest. And the green accents? Not really disproving my whole disease theory. So from the waist down and the neck up, Cate looks great. But the chest is the “no cigar”.

Grade: C-

Honorable Mentions: Performance Outfits

And the award for best dressed while singing goes to…Chuck Bartowski! My beloved Zachary Levi may have looked a tad too tan, but damn, did he look dapper. Plus I’m just thrilled with the fact that his awesome swoon-worthiness was displayed to a large audience. Grade: A

Oh yeah, and some women sang too. Florence Welch’s gown looked better on TV than in photos, but at least it was a step up from her red carpet get up. Grade: B- As for Gwyneth, she can do better – and I’m talking both about her dress and her singing. Grade: C And while Mandy Moore’s dress was certainly…large, I thought it was a great choice for performing a song from a fairy tale. Grade: B+

The Seven Best Dressed

7. Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore was a little unrecognizable at first – did she always look so much like Anne Hathaway? – but she looked like a princess in this gorgeous sparkling gown. Fitting, considering she was there to sing a nominated song from Tangled.

Grade: B+

6. Celine Dion

This is a woman who once wore a backwards tuxedo to the Oscars. You’ve come a long way, baby.

Grade: A-

5. Hilary Swank

White swan at the top, black swan at the bottom! I’m not usually a fan of Hilary Swank, but last night she looked soft and pretty. It was like she was Matt Damon’s sister, rather than him dressed in drag.

Grade: A-

4. Helen Mirren

There’s that damn Helen Mirren…(a reference to last year’s co-hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.)

Who knew gray could look so good? I really love the puffed sleeves and waistline on this gown, and the necklace works in an unexpected way. This woman exudes class the way Colin Firth exudes charm, and it helps that her bit with Russell Brand was hilarious.

Grade: A-

3. Hailee Steinfeld

Fashion icon in the making? I think so. Hailee Steinfeld exudes so much confidence and charm that it’s easy to forget she’s a teenager who was nominated for her first ever role.

Apparently she helped design this Marchesa number, which is pretty much every teenage girl’s dream come true. I love how youthful, fun and pretty it is. The length is great and different, and the neckline is so pretty. She’s worn her hair down a lot, so it was great to see her with it pulled back and her makeup was fantastic.

Grade: A

2. Mila Kunis

or #2 spot on my Best Dressed list all season, so this girl deserves serious praise. She’s wowed me with her use of color, the gorgeous cuts of the gowns she’s chosen, and her overall beauty.

This dress was the sexiest one of all. When she walked onto the red carpet, I thought “This? This is why men watch red carpets.” She manages to show a lot of skin without looking cheap, and it struck the perfect balance of modern sex appeal and old Hollywood glamor.

Grade: A

1. Natalie Portman

It’s hard to compare Natalie and Mila since Mila looked so sexy and Natalie is pregnant, but I had to give the top spot to Natalie for just looking so freakin’ amazing. The cut of her dress was so flattering and made her look effortlessly beautiful. She has definitely joined the ranks of pregnant style icons like Jessica Alba, Catherine Zeta Jones and Angelina Jolie.

My favorite things about the gown were the color and the neckline, and I also absolutely loved her tassel earrings. Some people on Twitter were bashing them, but as one like-minded tweeter said to me, it’s nice to see a departure from the usual glitzy diamonds and gems.

While I loved Natalie’s hair, I didn’t love her makeup. Up close there was too much eyeshadow under her eyes and it made her look a bit tired.

Still, I was blown away by her beauty.

Grade: A+
