The Worst Fashion Trends of All Time

Popular styles may come and go, but some fashion trends stick out in our memory as particularly awful. Whether you wore these embarrassing trends yourself or merely enjoy laughing at outdated photos, we’re presenting the worst fashion trends of all time. Let us know which ones you find the most offensive. By Joanna Douglas, Shine Staff.

Shoulder pads
These sewn-in garment enhancements swept through the 1980s like a plague infecting every blouse, dress, and blazer. Alexis Colby, the fictional character played by Joan Collins on “Dynasty,” may be their reigning queen. Shoulder pads made a brief recent comeback thanks to Lady Gaga’s bizarre costumes, but overall they are still shunned.

Harem pants
We all made fun of MC Hammer’s parachute pants back in 1990, but in recent years everyone from Gwen Stefani to Heidi Klum have sworn by their drop-crotch pants. We think they look like you’re wearing a diaper.

Fannypacks
These unflattering waist pouches have always been a “fashion don’t” commonly associated with tourists. Occasionally celebrities like Rihanna will wear designer fannypacks, which seem even more absurd.

Ed Hardy
With fans like Jon Gosselin and the cast of “Jersey Shore” Ed Hardy gear acts sort of like a radar telling you who to avoid at all costs.

Bare midriff
Crop tops have been around since the ’60s and stars like Madonna got ladies exposing their tummies in the ’80s, but pop stars like Christina Aguilera rarely wore full-length shirts in the late ’90s and early ’00s. No wonder “8 minute abs” videos were so popular.

Saggy pants
Hip-hop artists in the ’90s started sagging and guys everywhere followed suit. Government officials have tried to ban sagging by law, but during the 2008 election Barack Obama said he felt it was a waste of time. “Having said that,” Obama told MTV, “brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What’s wrong with that? Come on. Some people might…

Fancy track suits
Adidas warm ups are still considered classic, but the early 2000s was all about Juicy Couture. Some ladies preferred terry cloth, many were velour-loyalists, and others liked words written across their butts. You can thank Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Lindsay Lohan for the still-present sweatpants in public craze….

Trucker Hats
These foam front/mesh back baseball hats have been around forever, but we can thank Ashton Kutcher, Justin Timberlake, and Von Dutch for making them insanely popular in the early 2000s.

Furry boots
Rapper Flo Rida may have swooned over girls in the “boots with the fur,” but we think they make ordinary humans look like a Muppet. Or in Snooki’s case, part poodle.

Leisure suits
These 1970s suits are made of polyester and often have oversized collars, flared legs, and come in a variety of nauseating colors. Funny to look at in photos, terrifying if they ever make a comeback.

Scrunchies
In the late ’80s most girls had at least a dozen scrunchies in different fabrics (at least one was velvet) to match with different outfits. American Apparel has tried to revive them, but thankfully most women are now too ashamed to wear them in public.

Popped collars
Deliberately wearing an upturned collar was a style in the ’50s that made a huge resurgence in the ’80s thanks to “The Official Preppy Handbook.” In recent years, high school and college kids took to wearing multiple layers of colorful polos with popped collars, perhaps the worst incarnation to date.

Sneakers that exercise for you
Since the Kardashians would willingly endorse toilet paper (no, really, they have!) we’re not surprised they partnered with Skechers Shape Ups, the sneakers that supposedly tone your body as you walk. It didn’t take long for experts to confirm they’re not only a hoax, but they can actually damage your ankles.

Pacifiers
During the ’90s rave days, people sucked on colorful pacifiers like infants. Apparently this was to prevent teeth grinding when on drugs like Ecstasy, but soon there were pacifier necklaces rings and earrings too.

Clear bra straps
We know they’re clear, but we still see them and they look silly. Courtney Stodden wears them, so that’s reason enough to stop. Please go strapless or wear a garment that covers your bra straps so this trend can finally die.

Visible thongs
Combine the popularity of lowrise denim and thongs (thanks, SisQo) and stretchy colorful panties were poking out of jeans everywhere. Bum cleavage is typically not appreciated in public, so we were thrilled when high-rise jeans made a comeback.

Baby barrettes
These old school plastic Goody barrettes are adorable for kids under five, but in the ’90s Courtney Love and fellow riot grrrls inspired teens to adopt the juvenile accessory.

Gladiator sandals
Subtle straps are fine, but a few years ago Gladiator sandals were on steroids. Check out this Chanel pair on Mary-Kate Olsen. They would make for some tragic tan lines and blisters.

Baby backpacks
In “Clueless,” Alicia Silverstone’s character asks, “Do you prefer fashion victim or ensembly challenged?” We might ask her the same thing for rocking a teeny tiny furry backpack that holds nothing more than a wallet, cell phone, and lipstick.

Pop Stars’ Wildest Onstage Outfits

From horrid to hair-raising, the music world has a constant supply of under-edited and over-the-top and looks for our amusement! While artists dress wilder than anyone for their red carpet and on-stage moments, there’s a thin line between cool and just plain crazy. Here are just some of the looks that sorely needed to go back to the drawing board. – by Tiffany Lee

Madonna

Madonna has a history of outrageous outfits. The 53-year-old rocked risqué fishnets, bikini shorts and lace-up platform heels and showed off her assets at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami this past weekend.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj always looked like a space case (in a cool and cute way), but this ensemble is out of this world. A spawn of R2D2 and Jane Jetson, the outdated “futuristic” structured skirt and shoulder attachments made the rapper look too much like a Tomorrowland employee.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus’ hodgepodge version of a gangsta girl outfit at the 2010 MuchMusic Video Awards is not only a smirkable, but certainly too revealing for the then 17-year-old. An aggressive attempt to break out of her goofy Hannah Montana image, the outfit choice can only be attributed to the follies of youth—and a terrible stylist.

Christina Aguilera

It’s always interesting how fashions that were so cool at the time become grossly laughable just a few years later. But I have a feeling that this look wasn’t cool at the time either. Christina Aguilera’s frightening wig at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards looks like a bad case of electrocution that hopefully shocked some fashion sense into her. Leave the big, Aquanet hair to the headbangers and Tina Turner next time, please?…

Fergie

Fergie as a superhero? Not a crazy idea considering the chiseled pop singer certainly has the cut to fit a hero cloth. But her 2010 tour look needed some serious editing: The silver visor screams “Super Friends Retirement Community” and that metal codpiece? Leave it back at BEP headquarters next time.

Lady Gaga

The legend of the yeti is true! Oh wait, that’s just Lady Gaga swathed in curtains of hair extensions. Not a stranger to the strange, Gaga’s hairbrained 2010 tour costume doesn’t fit into her usual sexy, wildly edgy and forward-thinking looks. Some needs to take a razor (or a blow torch) to that whole outfit!

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez has one of the coveted bodies in the business, but whoever green lit this hot mess for her New Year’s Eve 2011 performance must’ve been out for blood! The unfortunate jumpsuit wrinkled in the most unflattering places and made JLo look like a frumpy amphibian. Just goes to show that bedazzling can rarely fix a disastrous look.

MIA

Performing while pregnant seems to be all the rage nowadays. But none made it as obvious as M.I.A. at the 2009 Grammy Awards—and her ensemble didn’t let anyone forget it. Skin tight is always a hard look for a very pregnant woman, but to exaggerate her size with giant polka dots and sheer just seems cruel! What made it harder to watch was the thought that she could pop at any moment.

Beyonce

Rarely does Beyonce have a fashion miss, but this outfit made the stunning singer look like a human dream catcher. The barely-there dress, while an awesome idea, turned a dream into a fringy, frayed, macramed nightmare.

Britney Spears

It’s one thing to have a super hero-inspired look (as per Fergie), but it’s another thing to look like you actually believe you can fly. Britney Spears’ 2004 tour ensemble could’ve been another sexy on-stage look, but the addition of a full-on cape made the singer look a little too insane.

Amazing Celebrity Beauty Transformations

Surely all our favorite stars posing at various red-carpet events and fabulous magazine covers, singing, starring, designing… and so on, and so forth haven’t all along looked the way how they’re looking now. Celebrities undergo various changes in their fashion favor, hairstyle, and makeup through their fabulous career in order to fit current fashion trends. Thus let’s run over some amazing celebrity beauty transformations, starting from the very beginning of their career. Some of celebrity beauty looks will make you smile, some – admire and others amaze or even inspire you for your own beauty transformation (at least I hope so). Okay, let’s get started! Below you will find amazing beauty transformations of such famous celebs as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Scarlett Johansson, oh-so-stylish-NOW Anne Hathaway and others.

Britney Spears’s Beauty Transformation

Britney Spears as any usual person surely was spotted in her bad hair days or not-so-good makeup ones, but anyway Britney still looks good. And I must admit now she looks much better than in her early days.

Scarlett Johansson’s Beauty Transformation

Well, if to speak about Scarlett Johansson I can literally say Scarlett’s turned from ugly duckling into a very beautiful swan. Her signature red lips combined with blond tresses and spiced with her feminine curves do its part, making this woman one of the hottest Hollywood actresses.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Beauty Transformation

Age undoubtedly suits Sarah Jessica Parker… it adds grace, elegance and refinement to her inimitable beauty look. What is more, having outstanding and not really “Hollywood-typical” appearance Sarah Jessica Parker can boast of very successful acting career.

Christina Aguilera’s Beauty Transformation

Christina Aguilera is one of the very few celebs whom I want to see several years younger (or more exactly, several pounds less) but with some current beauty details.

Jessica Alba’s Beauty Transformation

Jessica Alba is the one who has looked perfect always… okay maybe not always. But I can bet there is no one girl who doesn’t hide her not-so-successful photos.

Anne Hathaway’s Beauty Transformation

Anne Hathaway always looks stylish and elegant. The only thing I’d like to mention that fringe makes her look so to say girlish, so it’s good that she has changed the way her hair styled and opted for more feminine and chic beauty look.

Well, whose beauty transformation seems to you the most successful?

Celebrity style: party dressing hits and misses

The office bash is right around the corner and you still haven’t a clue what to wear… eek! Well, don’t panic just yet. To inspire you to look your fabulous best and avoid any party dressing pitfalls, we put together a gallery of celebrity style hits and misses and asked Gemma Rose Breger (@GemmaRoseBreger) at Carol Hayes Management for her expert opinion. Gemma is one of London’s top stylists, and her super-impressive client list ranges from big stars like Jennifer Hudson and Olivia Palermo, through to leading fashion glossies and high end brands. Look and learn from the stars who get it right, and, sometimes, so horribly wrong.

Hit
Working classic after-dark glamour, Lauren Goodger opts for a classy figure-hugging maxi, an ideal pick for her curvy figure. Gemma is full of praise for Lauren’s demure red carpet get-up. ‘She looks gorgeous in this asymmetric gown by Lipsy. The oversized sleeve balances perfectly with the body-skimming shape and I love the shoulder embellishment – it keeps the dress on trend and adds a quirky effect to the whole ensemble.’

Miss
There’s a fine line between figure-hugging and overly tight. Unfortunately, Lauren appears to have crossed it with a frock that seems two sizes toosmall. ‘This House of Dereon dress is the wrong fit for Lauren’s frame,’ says Gemma. ‘She’s got stunning curves and should wear clothes that compliment them. If she had paired the dress with an oversized blazer, it would have looked far more flattering. Lauren needs to remember she has amazing legs and that there’s no need to flash too much skin – if she’s wearing a mini with her pins exposed, she should try to cover up more on top.’

Hit
When it comes to figure-enhancing party dressing, choosing the right sort of fabric can work wonders: Kelly Osbourne shows off her svelte silhouette in soft, draping chiffon, a look that gets the big thumbs-up from Gemma. ‘Kelly has got it so right in this Badgley Mischka outfit. The long lines of the jacket elongate her figure, the nude colour of the dress is perfect with her pale skin tone, and the black belt nips in her waist to show off her curves.’

Miss
A poor choice of material here does nothing for Kelly’s figure. ‘She hasn’t got it right with this vintage Chanel dress,’ says Gemma. ‘The satin fabric clings in the wrong places and is pulling over her stomach. Not a flattering look. She should have worn a loose grungy T-shirt over the top half to make it look like a skirt and top combo. Sadly, satin is only a safe fabric for those with a model-esque figure, and even then it can still be a risk as there are always lumps and bumps that can’t be hidden – this type of clingy material exaggerates every single blemish.’

Hit
Highlighting your best bits and playing down any imperfections is key to successful party dressing: Khloe Kardashian gets it spot on with a two-piece LBD that shows off her assets: those long legs and that hourglass waist. Gemma’s take on this flattering look? ‘Khloe looks amazing in her black Gucci dress. The nipped-in waist and prom skirt are perfect for her figure, and the narrow pleats elongate her never-ending legs. The studded bowed Louboutins are the icing on the cake – they make the dress look so fierce.

Miss
If you’re carrying a little extra weight, it’s never a good idea to swamp yourself in billowing material: Khloe looks far larger than she actually is in this overblown Gucci gown. ‘The style is wrong for Khloe’s figure,’ says Gemma. ‘She seems to be swimming in fabric. The dress is just so shapeless, and the balloon sleeves are too oversized. That pussy bow around her neck cuts off her body which makes her look chunky. This dress would look so much better if it was sleeveless and had no tie around the neck, and adding a long drapey necklace would help elongate her silhouette.’

Hit
You’ll stand out for all the right reasons if you sport a hue that works with your complexion: Uma Thurman’s shimmery gold Lanvin dress gets Gemma’s seal of approval. ‘The warm metallic colour compliments her honey skin tone perfectly, and the trench coat style is a fantastic choice: it adds volume in all the right areas to her tall, statuesque frame. Tying the belt at the side is an effective body shape trick – it’s always the most flattering place as it deflects attention up and away from the stomach.’

Miss
If you opt for volume on your lower half, go for a close-fitting top. It’s a golden style rule that Uma appears to have overlooked here. ‘Uma usually gets it right, so it’s a shame to see her in something that doesn’t work on her svelte Amazonian figure,’ says Gemma. This Lanvin outfit is too shapeless and voluminous for her. ‘The black silk-taffeta skirt would have looked so much more flattering teamed with a fitted vest-style top and a chunky statement necklace. She needs to show more skin!’

Hit
You can’t go wrong with a well-cut LBD, and Kirsten Dunst ticks all the boxes in her covetable black frock. Gemma rates her choice highly. ‘This is one of the best outfits I’ve seen Kirsten in. She’s wearing vintage Versace, and the light chiffon fabric combined with the cut-out back and pointed heels looks ultra-glam. The dress sits below the knee which can sometimes cut off a petite figure, but as it’s fitted around her legs and she has enough skin showing on top and at the back, it’s a super-flattering length for her. This look is sexy yet so chic.’

Miss
An LBD that tapers out too much at the waist can overwhelm a petite silhouette: Gemma isn’t too taken with Kirsten’s fetish-inspired Derek Lam dress for obvious reasons. ‘The A-line cut of the skirt doesn’t suit her petite figure and the heavy black Chanel booties are a bit OTT. Her boobs look uncomfortably squished, too. A lighter strappy heel would have softened the outfit, and a smattering of jewellery would have helped the ensemble look less stark and intense.’

Hit
Blessed with an hourglass shape? A dress that hugs the hips and tapers out at the calf will balance out proportions and enhance your curves: Christina Aguilera’s maxi gets Gemma’s vote. ‘She looks outstanding in this Zuhair Murad dress. It’s the perfect shape for her – the mermaid tail bottom slims out her hips and bust, and the black velvet bow around her tiny waist puts all the focus on the smallest part of her body.’

Miss
Oh dear. The curse of the overly tight dress strikes again. Christina’s clingy body con look wins no plaudits from Gemma. ‘Sadly for Christina, this Hervé Léger isn’t doing her shapely figure any favours. The colour is washing her out – she should stick with bolder shades. And she really should be wearing a pair of Spanx under that dress as there’s a tell-tale VPL and lumpy bits around her hips. She’s got such a sexy body, but she should stick to either legs or cleavage on show, never both.’

Hit
Wearing bright red is not for the faint-hearted, but this vibrant hue works wonderfully on Mary J Blige according to Gemma. ‘This beauty of a red dress Mary J is wearing is RM by Roland Mouret. The colour looks sensational with her skin tone. The square neckline perfectly frames her décolletage and the cap sleeves balance out her hips. Those nude shoes are a nice touch, as the subtle colour lets the dress do all the talking.’

Miss
An ill-fitting maxi dress and badly matched accessories equal a fashion faux pas for Mary J. ‘This leopard one-shoulder dress by Roberto Cavalli isn’t working on Mary J’s figure,’ explains Gemma. ‘The busy print combined with the roomy shape makes her look very wide around the hips and midriff. And those glitzy oversized earrings don’t blend well with the bohemian style of the dress – she should have accessorised with long feather earrings instead. Mary J has an enviable figure but you can’t tell with this frock.’

Hit
Subtly showing off a little flesh can add some sass to a timeless LBD: Katie Holmes dresses her age for once, and Gemma is impressed. ‘This frock is a big hit for Katie. She’s wearing her own brand, Holmes & Yang, and is dressing far younger than usual – let’s not forget she’s in her early 30s, so there’s no need for her to wear frumpy clothes. The deep V-neck, cut-out back and pleated skirt are ultra-flattering, and draw the eye to her best feature, that tiny waist. She’s gone for an excellent footwear choice – nude shoes are always a safe option as they can elongate the legs.’

Miss
Covering up too much is a no-no. Lost in her dress, Katie undoes all her good work with this frou-frou fuchsia confection. ‘It’s far too oversized on her,’ says Gemma. ‘She’s drowning in fabric which makes her look a lot bigger than the tiny size six she actually is – always remember to show a little skin as it’s more flattering than covering your body from high neckline to toes. And to make matters worse, the colour is not so great on her either – she has quite a lot of pink in her skin tone and the dress only emphasises that.’

Hit
Looking sexy needn’t mean getting it all out. Gemma reckons Lauren Pope strikes the right tone here. ‘Lauren has struck the perfect balance between showing some skin but not too much in this red Honor Gold mini dress. With its high neck and long sleeves, it looks gorgeous on her. The sleeves are a sheer lace which stops the dress looking too heavy. The metallic accessories are a nice touch, and tone down the bold red colour so it doesn’t look too scary-bright.’

Miss
Can someone please remind Lauren that less is sometimes more? ‘She’s really let herself down with this Louis Heal dress,’ Gemma says. ‘Lauren has a stunning figure but there’s no need to flaunt it to this extent. She suits the colour extremely well but it’s hard to even notice when her whole body is on display. You can see the tit tape on her thigh, so I’m sure she had quite a struggle throughout the night holding the whole thing in place . It’s so much sexier to keep something to the imagination, and this dress would have looked absolutely gorgeous with a mid-thigh split, rather than a mid-body split!’

Hit
A body con dress that fits beautifully is always a winner. Cue Jennifer Love Hewitt in scene-stealing Dolce & Gabbana. Gemma applauds this well-thought-out pick. ‘Jennifer looks sensational in the bottle green dress. The shape is stunning on her, and super-flattering. The colour looks great with her skin tone and hair. The black skinny Lanvin belt and corseted shape of the dress flatter her ladylike curves. And she’s wearing gold Miu Miu peep-toes that bring out the metallic sheen on the dress even more. Gorgeous!’

Miss
Camouflaging your curves in sheets of fabric does not a good party outfit make. ‘This red Max Azria shirt dress swamps Jennifer’s figure,’ says Gemma. ‘It makes her look a few sizes larger than she actually is. As it sits right on her knee yet is oversized, it cuts off her legs and ankles, making them look stocky. This isn’t helped by T-bar shoes, which have a shortening effect on the legs. The batwing shape of the sleeves just add more unwelcome volume and they drown her body. If she’d swapped the red tie for a wide metallic belt, it would have given her a more defined shape.’

Celeb looks this summer (off the red carpet!)

What summer looks are the celebs wearing this summer 2011?

We admit it- we’re a tad bit bored of celebrities’ glamour looks on the red carpet and premiers. So this time, we investigate what summer make-up is to celebs when they’re allowed to cut some slack in the ‘i-need-to-look-like-a-porcelain-beauty’ pressure.

Pulled back bangs with a slight bouffant and rosy lips (not such a good idea with thick dark liner!).

Celebrities Wore Short Skirts

Diane Kruger

Thank you, Dolce & Gabbana, for helping to show off this former model’s gorgeous legs—but another inch or two added to the hem would make this piece look more like a proper dress!

Eva Longoria Parker

Dayum, ELP, we’ve seen swimsuits that have more leg coverage than this!

Ellen Pompeo

Insert joke about being thisclose to seeing the Grey’s star’s anatomy here.

Lindsay Lohan

How many times do we have to repeat this: Tights are not pants, ladies!

Milla Jovovich

It’s slouchy, sparkly and cute, but we hope the next incarnation of the Resident Evil: Afterlife star’s gold tunic involves pants.

Mischa Barton

Top half: mumsy granny style. Bottom half: All bare skin. If outfits could be bipolar, this would be it.

Britney Spears

Whoever told her this shirt could be pulled off as a dress, lied.

Cameron Diaz

Sweaterdress or just a sweater? This sparkly V-neck is so short it’s too hard to tell. (Cam’s gams do look awesome, though.)

Jada Pinkett Smith

Stomping the BET Awards red carpet in this black-and-white onesie is wrong on so many levels.

Ke$ha

The singer sports a leopard leotard, patched leather jacket and boot combo at Fashion Week. But where are the biker bottoms or—at the very least—some chaps?

Jamie-Lynn Sigler

Why is the former Sopranos star wearing her sleep shirt to a fashion collection launch party in NYC? Talk about a faux pas!

Kate Walsh

The Private Practice star’s shirtdress is way more shirt than dress.

Whitney Port

A big white dinner jacket obscuring barely there tap pants…How many different explanations can you come up with for this reality star’s funky getup?

Victoria Beckham

Even Posh is aware her clothes are too short—check out that tug.

Kate Hudson

Ugg boots with a teeny-weeny floral slip?! It’s pretty sad when Kate’s lack of pants actually isn’t her biggest problem.

Mariah Carey

A few more inches added to the hemline and this could’ve been a dress (not a great one, but a dress nonetheless). So close, Mimi!

Mel B

She’s no longer a Spice Girl, but she’s definitely still scaring people.

Ginnifer Goodwin

This is all you’ve got, Ginny, a trench coat? We’d suggest putting on some pants before any more people mistake you for a flasher.

Taylor Momsen

It doesn’t matter that the sides of this sad sack give a little extra coverage—it’s still way too short where it counts most. Put on some pants, sweetie, or you’re grounded.

Solange Knowles

Feathered details are fun, but what this tank really needs is an extra few inches of fabric at the bottom.

Jessica Simpson

The teeny-weeny, printed tunic is adorable, but it looks like Jess forgot a bottom to go with it. Chalk this up as another blunder for the fashion-challenged singer.

Rihanna

The grey sweater looks cozy, but even this noted fashion rebel and all-around badass looks odd going out in just a top. May we suggest moving the fringe from the shoulders to the bottom hem for more coverage?

Vanessa Hudgens

Look, V, we know your gladiator platforms are, like, supercute, but c’mon, going out in this getup is not the classiest way to show ‘em off.

Christina Aguilera

Xtina shows off her wild side in a cheetah-print onesie, sparking a thousand more comparisons to Lady Gaga in the process.

Lindsay Lohan

Remember when LiLo had that little problem where the police found cocaine in pants she claimed were not hers? Well, the starlet figured out how to avoid that issue entirely.

Lady Gaga

We’re not the biggest fans of her wacky pantless style, but the chanteuse practically owns this look, complete with the ‘tude to carry it off.

Blake Lively

Gotta wonder how many times people kindly whispered to Blake, “Sweetie, did you forget something tonight?” Because opaque tights, though they cover up the skin, do not equate to pants or any other kind of acceptable bottoms.

Shenae Grimes

A plaid button-up, floral-patterned hosiery, no pants and slouchy thigh-high boots. Four wrongs make…one huge mess! (Which is too bad, because the 90210 star’s got potential.)

Lily Allen

So the “Smile” singer isn’t wearing a bottom (remember, tights don’t count), but the strategically placed Chanel purse is really cute, right?

Pamela Anderson

The mother of two is a repeat offender when it comes to going out pantless. Could this be a sign of a midlife crisis for the former Baywatch babe?

Katy Perry

Poor Katy. Little does the singer know, all eyes are on her not because what she’s saying onstage is so captivating but because she forgot to wear the matching slacks to her D&G blazer. Oops!

Lisa Rinna

The fortysomething TV host’s bod is still smokin’. But one wrong move in this way-too-mini minidress and she could easily flash her lady parts, and that’s not something anyone wants to see, no matter how fit she is.

Who Wore It Best?

Olivia Palermo VS Victoria Beckham

For a screening of new movie The Ledge a couple of weeks ago, Olivia Palermo pulled back her hair and popped on this zesty Victoria Beckham design with a eclectic choice of accessories: embellished brass cuff, hot pink petal clutch and leopard print heels.

Whenever we see a Victoria Beckham dress on a celeb, though, it’s bound to have been worn before – by the designer herself. Well, you would, wouldn’t you?! VB gave this beauty its first public outing back in November, when she took it out to dinner along with her favourite Victoria bag.

WINNER: There’s nothing in it when you’re just looking at two gorgeous ladies in a gorgeous dress – so it’s Posh’s flawlessly sleek accessorising that nudges her into the top spot.

Kate Middleton vs Sarah Jessica Parker

Kate Middleton‘s love affair with Alexander McQueen is about as well-documented as it gets. So we couldn’t help but feel that this cable-knit, sailor-style dress was a sartorially spot-on choice as part of her Canada tour wardrobe.

…It also fits with the austerity drive too, as it’s not a new-season design. In fact, Sarah Jessica Parker wore the same dress in navy (along with a punchy pair of red mules and contrasting tan clutch) to celebrate her husband Matthew Broderick being awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame all the way back in 2006.

WINNER: We can’t help but feel that Kate’s take on this dress is a little uninspired. SJP edges it thanks to her fearless shoe choice.

Olivia Palermo vs Elen Rivas

Just when we thought Olivia Palermo couldn’t get any cooler, she shows up on the front row of a Couture show in Paris wearing a stunning lampshade dress from Zara – yes, it’s from the high street! – accessorised to the hilt with feathers and bling. Bravo!

Unfortunately for Elen Rivas, the very same day that Olivia was styling it up in the fashion capital she was papped wearing exactly the same design – in with a bad pose and with unfortunate rogue bra strap on the loose. We do rate her candy-coloured peeptoes, though.

WINNER: Olivia’s super-polished take on this dress earns her a no-contest win.

Jessica Szohr V Irina Shayk

Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr looked cute as a button when she wore this beachy Raquel Allegra tie-dye maxi dress with a bouffant ponytail and flat sandals to an event promoting So.Be drinks.

We wonder whether Ronaldo’s squeeze, Irina Shayk, was paying attention? Just a few days later, we spotted the model wearing exactly the same dress, albeit cinched in with a silver belt and paired with a boxy white handbag and black gladiator sandals.

WINNER: Both girls have put their own stamp on this dress, but it’s Jessica’s easy, breezy summer style that does it for us.

Paris Hilton V Katie Price

Talk about a blast from the past! Paris Hilton wore this blue asymmetric Brian Lichtenberg dress to the Fox Reality Awards back in 2009, accentuating its shape with a sculptural up-do.

Katie Price probably thought enough water had passed under the fashion bridge to get away with wearing the same design – albeit in red, and with loose hair – to the Terrence Higgins Trust Gala dinner a couple of weeks ago. But nothing gets past our eagle eyes, Katie!

WINNER: Paris’ sophisticated take on the look wins hands down for us – and we’re suckers for blonde on blue.

Emma Roberts vs Laura Bailey

It’s no secret that Emma Roberts is a Chanel devotee, so we weren’t surprised to see her on the front row of the label’s spring/summer 2011 catwalk show in this classic blue tweed dress with flirty feather trim in March.

Brit model Laura Bailey followed suit (well, dress), a few months later at the Royal Academy of Arts preview at Somerset House. Like Emma, she kept her blonde locks loose and opted for a neat clutch and closed-toe platform heels to finish.

WINNER: It’s a tough one, but we think Emma just pips Laura to the prize.

Diane Kruger vs Natalie Massenet

Diane Kruger caused quite the stir in this neon lace-panelled maxi dress with contrast belt at the Liaisons au Louvre event in Paris last month. The distinctive design is by hot new name-to-know Alessandra Rich.

…But eagle-eyed style watchers will have known that already, as Net-A-Porter founder Natalie Massenet – whose online boutique is championing the label – debuted it at the Royal Academy of Arts preview at Somerset House at the beginning of June.

WINNER: The nonchalent blonde waves, the strappy blush sandals, the micro-clutch… This is a triumph for Diane.

Christina Aguilera vs. Kristen Stewart

Christina Aguilera stepped out in this asymmetric lace Valentino cocktail dress – accessorised with her usual va-va-voom armoury of bombshell tresses, red lip, full-on tan and peeptoe heels – for the 2nd Annual Mary J Blige Honors Concert in New York last month.

Proving that it’s not what you wear, it’s the way that you wear it, Kristen Stewart wore exactly the same dress in a completely different way (messy up-do, closed-toe heels, natural skintone) for a screening of Welcome To The Rileys back in October 2010.

WINNER: Kristen’s demure take on this wins hands down for us. Sorry, Xtina!

Kate Middleton vs. Lydia Bright

Kate Middleton earned Reiss’ Shola dress a gazillion column inches when it was the first post-honeymoon look she was pictured in. Oh, and she also happened to be chatting to Michelle Obama at the time. Talk about a double whammy.

Pity, then, TOWIE‘s Lydia Bright, who was snapped just a week later in the same design as she did a spot of shopping in London.

WINNER: Oh, Lydia, honey. This was one battle you were never going to win – so why even try?

Ciara vs. Kylie Minogue

For Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala earlier this year, US singer Ciara ensured all eyes were on her by keeping the lacing on her gorgeous micro mini Emilio Pucci dress loose and pairing it with lashings of diamond accessories.

Kylie, meanwhile, took a more conservative approach when she wore the same dress to a theatre opening night last month; pulling it in tighter, and adding two actual feathers for a neat styling one-two.

WINNER: Ciara, there’s no denying that you look seriously hot, but Kylie and Pucci go together like Lagerfeld and Chanel. Kylie wins!

Kate Bosworth vs. Taylor Swift

No wonder Kate Bosworth looks so pleased with herself. This lust-worthy white lace dress, which she was snapped in out and about in Colorado a few weeks ago, is a £48 Topshop treasure. The actress made a monochrome statement by adding opaque tights and killer Mulberry boots.

…But Taylor Swift had already set the sartorial standard, pairing the dress with bare legs and, ingeniously, a black tulle underskirt and belt when she was spotted in it in London the week prior.

WINNER: Taylor’s only gone and done it – out-styled the style queen herself! Ms Swift, we salute you.

Olga Kurylenko vs. Nicky Hilton

Bond girl Olga Kurylenko snapped up this stunning silver Giorgio Armani cocktail dress with origami fan detailing before taking her place on the front row of the designer’s couture show in Paris earlier this year. Who can blame her? Simple black accessories finished off the look.

Fast forward four months, and Nicky Hilton put a different spin on the dress with a strict updo and coordinating silver shoes and jewellery at the 18th Annual Race To Erase MS gala in NYC.

WINNER: There really isn’t much in this one, but we’re handing it to Olga. This dress requires some smouldering and Nicky’s look is edging prim.

Cameron Diaz vs. Pippa Middleton

Back in 2009, Cameron Diaz teamed this hot red Alexander McQueen gown with vertiginous Salvatore Ferragamo heels and an up do for the Golden Globes – and won critical approval for her bared-back, sexed up style.

So who would’ve believed that, two years later, we’d see the same dress – albeit slightly modified – sashaying down the aisle at the most celebrated royal wedding in decades? Pippa Middleton is the most unlikely style crush to have come out of the occasion (we already loved The Queen, FYI).

WINNER: It has to be Pippa. Not only was the occasion momentous, but the rear view of her in this dress is now an internet phenomenon. Respect!

Rose McGowan vs. Kate Middleton

Rose McGowan dazzled in this hot pink Issa dress at this year’s SAG awards, styling it up Studio 54-style with sexy loose waves and a chunky cuff.

Kate Middleton‘s Issa obsession is well-documented, so it’s little wonder that she was also spotted rocking the same dress before she was a married woman. Kate paired hers with a black clutch bag, diamond earrings and, unsurprisingly, a more conservative neckline.

WINNER: Tough one. But this dress was made for turning heads, so it’s Rose’s out-and-out ‘look at me!’ take on it that wins out for us.

Katherine Jenkins vs. Brooklyn Decker

Katherine Jenkins loves a bit of Victoria Beckham, so we were pleased to see that this gorgeous caramel fitted dress (which features a zip full down the back) made the cut when she attended an event at the Royal Albert Hall in March.

The dress was also the dress of choice, however, for US starlet Brooklyn Decker, who wore it to Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. Check those curves!

WINNER: While it’s impossible to choose between the girls in the dress itself, Brooklyn just edges this one on account of her shoes – Katherine’s look a little clumpy and uninspired in comparison – and that divine, directional bob.

Abbie Cornish vs. Chelsea Clinton

Aussie actress Abbie Cornish played it safe on the red carpet at the premiere of her new film, Limitless, last month. You can’t go far wrong in an LBD – especially if it’s current season Lanvin. She kept the rest of her look understated with a black clutch and heels, and a classic gold watch.

Chelsea Clinton had exactly the same idea back in December – she wore the same dress for The Clinton Foundation’s Millennium Network Event in LA with thick black tights and, interestingly, even less jewellery than Cornish.

WINNER: Congrats, Abbie! We think this dress calls for bare legs to show it off to its full potential, so you’ve got it spot on.

Christine Bleakley vs. Zara Phillips

Christine Bleakley pulled out all the stops at the premiere of her film A Turtle’s Tale, rocking this leather-trimmed Burberry trench coat – which would set you back an eye-watering £1,895, fashion fans – with black jeans and V-cut shoe-boots by Christian Louboutin.

Not normally known for her fashion cred, royal yoof Zara Phillips impressively beat Bleakley to the punch by a week, debuting the very same coat with thick black opaque tights, strappy Burberry heels, shades and a beret to the Cheltenham festival.

WINNER: You’re always going to look great in a design like this, so it’s Zara’s military-inspired super-styling does it for us. Sorry, Christine!

Rosamund Pike vs. Alexa Chung

Talk about out of this world! Rosamund Pike snaffled this Christopher Kane galaxy-print dress back in January for the New York premiere of her new film, Barney’s Version, teaming it with a simple pair of black opaques, black heels and a red carpet-ready box clutch.

Trendsetter Alexa Chung was quick to hop on the extra-terrestrial bandwagon, rocking exactly the same look – right down to the mussed-up hair and black tights – to the NME Awards last month.

Winner: It’s near impossible to separate the two – but we’re handing this victory to Rosamund for getting into the spirit with that amazing orb ring.

Kate Beckinsale vs. Amanda Peet

Kate Beckinsale wore this Nina Ricci lace confection in pink to an LA screening of Nowhere Boy last September. Keeping her hair and make-up pared back, she teamed it with simple nude peeptoes and a bronze clutch to set off her California glow.

Almost exactly six months later, Amanda Peet rocked the white version to the Independent Spirit Awards – putting a wintery spin on it by adding sheer black polka-dot tights and black peeptoe Mary-Janes.

Winner: Kate’s relaxed, sunny take on this look wins hands down for us. Amanda’s harsh black accessories, though not awful, seem to detract from the prettiness of the dress.

Lindsay Lohan vs. Kelly Osbourne

This Alexander Wang denim and leather jacket has been a mainstay in Lindsay Lohan’s wardrobe for a couple of years. Here, she gives it another airing in LA with a trusty pair of leggings and white T, accessorised with teetering brown platforms, sunnies and a panama hat.

Kelly O had the same idea earlier this month, throwing on her Wang over a white T and black trousers – but upping the glam stakes into the bargain with Monroe-esque waves and a slick of red lipstick.

Winner: Lindsay just can’t compete with sheer fashion force of Kelly’s immaculate styling. Kelly wins!

Pixie Geldof vs. January Jones

Pixie Geldof went dotty at the House Of Holland show at London Fashion Week. Literally. Never one to do things by halves, she teamed her navy wide-leg Topshop trousers with a matching blouse  - and came off looking quite fabulous, actually.

Across the pond, January Jones dressed down her Topshop purchase with black boots, a denim jacket and a plain knit as she headed to her car in LA last week.

Winner: Controversial, we know, but Pixie has wowed us here. (Though to be fair to January, probably couldn’t look bad even if she tried.)

Kate Beckinsale vs. Kim Kardashian

At last year’s Cannes Film Fesitival, Kate Beckinsale looked every inch the movie goddess as she took to the red carpet in this elaborately-pleated Nina Ricci gown. Those glossy, honey waves and chandelier drop earrings are pure A-list.

Nine months down the line reality TV hottie Kim Kardashian had the same idea, wearing the gown to a Golden Globes after party – albeit with slightly more dramatic styling in the hair and make-up department.

Winner: Kate is blowing away all the competition this month! It’s a close call, but her more natural styling gives this stunning dress more room to shine.

Olivia Palermo vs. Chloe Green

If there’s a Topshop hero piece to be had, you can guarantee that Olivia’s going to be the girl to bag it. She – somewhat controversially, it has to be said – teamed this stand-out maxi skirt with a chunky jumper and tan belt to sit front row at the London Fashion Week spring/summer 2011 shows.

…But she has competition in the way of Chloe Green, whose papa actuallyownsTopshop – tough break, Olivia. Just a day later, she stole Olivia’s style thunder by wearing the same distinctive skirt with a faux fur-shouldered jacket and long-sleeved navy T.

Winner: It’s a victory for Chloe! We see where Olivia was going with this but, when it comes to the crunch, we just don’t think she pulled it off.

Brooklyn Decker vs. Tess Daly

Brooklyn Decker took to the red carpet in Germany for her flick Just Go With It in this showstopping split-leg purple jumpsuit by Max Mara, which she teamed with strappy coral heels and a dischevelled up-do. We don’t blame her for pulling out all the stops – co-star Jennifer Aniston was also in attendance…

Proving herself to be a bit of a Max Mara obsessive, Tess Daly wore the same design to this year’s Brit Awards (it’s one of a handful of Max Mara pieces she’s been seen in of late). Here, she added a Grecian twist with a silver arm cuff and plaits, plus closed-toe silver heels.

Winner: Brooklyn gets our vote. Such a strong design calls for pared-back styling, and we can’t get enough of that colour pop at the heel.

Cheryl Cole vs. January Jones

The Versace dress Cheryl wore for the National Television Awards just a couple of weeks ago had the best of both worlds: a conservatively chic front panel, and an über-sexy, ultra-revealing cut-out back.

But this dress had already had its A-list moment, worn by January Jones to a fashion industry party back in November last year.

Winner: January’s up-do really lets the detail of this dress shine through. A rare loss for Cheryl!

Katy Perry vs. Ashanti

It was an unusually tame look for quirk queen Katy Perry, but she still looked stunning in this floor-length, metallic print Issa gown at a charity benefit in December. Loving the side-swept locks, Katy.

But, just a month before, another pop princess had already debuted the very same dress. Ashanti sported hers on the red carpet of a New York awards ceremony, with a half-up, half-down ‘do.

Winner: Since both girls steered clear of heavy accessories, it’s the hair and make-up that will win this round – and Katy’s pink lips, smoky eyes and to-die-for beachy locks are the clear victors.

Nicole Richie vs. Ellen Pompeo

It’s pretty handy designing your own collection, because it means you get to wear exactly what you want all the time! Nicole Richie was doing just that way back in 2009, when she donned this sparkly Winter Kate number with black tights and YSL heels for a New Year’s Eve party in Las Vegas.

Exactly a year later, Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo got her hands on the same dress for another Vegas party. The way she wore it? With black tights and black heels, just like Nicole!

Winner: We’d have preferred to see both ladies sans tights, but nevertheless we reckon this gold beauty fits better with Nicole’s natural, boho aesthetic than with Ellen’s. She is the designer, after all…

What do you think?

Kerry Washington vs. Kate Middleton

Gorgeous actress Kerry Washington is famed for her ultra-pretty red carpet choices – and this creamy Temperley London dress was no exception.

But there’s more than one way to wear this piece, as Princess-to-be Kate Middleton proved last Christmas matching it with a traditional blazer and sheer tights.

Winner: If this were a hair contest, Kate would win hands down, but those dated sheer tights means she loses out to Kerry in the style stakes on this one.

Claire Danes vs. Jaime Winstone

We thought this nude, criss-cross gown couldn’t get any more gorgeous when we spotted it on Claire Danes at 2004′s Costume Institute Gala…

…until Jaime Winstone rocked it even better at last year’s BAFTAs with a retro hair ‘do and strong make-up.

Winner: Jaime’s bags of attitude and daring beauty look are what won the GLAMOUR.COM girls over this time.

Audrina Patridge vs. Khloe Kardashian

Tumbling curls and a single bracelet were all the accessories Hills star Audrina Patridge needed to rock this rich red Alexander McQueen gown on the red carpet for the series’ season 4 finale in 2008.

Fast forward to last month, and fellow reality TV star Khloe Kardashian dug the same dress out of the archives for the People’s Choice Awards, this time in light dove grey.

Winner: Khloe’s colour choice was pretty, but there’s no beating Audrina’s va-va-voom red.
