Update your wardrobe for Spring/Summer 2012 in five steps

Be stylish this season!

Getting ready for Spring/Summer 2012 needn’t involve a complete wardrobe overhaul, so here are five simple steps on what to buy, what to ditch and what to keep for the coming months.

Era to embody: 1920s

Already one of the most talked about films of 2012 despite not being scheduled for release until December, fashionistas will be getting in the mood for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby during the spring and summer months. Gucci led the way at its Spring/Summer 2012 show with geometric print flapper dresses, while the Jazz Age was a key influence at the Etro show. Ralph Lauren was also enamored with the flapper style, with fringed skirts, elaborate beading on dresses, and cloche hats dominating its Spring/Summer 2012 presentation.

Image: Flapper dresses at Gucci

Image: Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2012 runway show featured 1920s-inspired items such as cloche hats.

Motif to embrace: floral

There are certain motifs we know will re-emerge season after season (nautical, lace, floral), and for Spring/Summer 2012 flowers are particularly prevalent. Colorful bloom prints were all over the catwalk, ranging from the iridescent creations adorned with multicolored blooms at Christopher Kane to the broderie anglaise Louis Vuitton frock sported by Lana Del Rey on the cover of UK Vogue’s March issue. Floral pieces from the Vuitton collection have also been seen on covers including British Elle (by Alexa Chung) to Vogue Japan (by Kate Moss). For the coming months, Paul Smith is offering cropped eafloral blazers, Diane von Furstenberg leaf-print pants, while 7 For All Mankind is offering floral print denim and Uniqlo has teamed up with English fashion and lifestyle brand Laura Ashley for a Spring 2012 collection comprising floral prints, T-shirts, stoles, and tunics.

Item to keep from Fall/Winter 11/12: anything leather

One of the biggest revelations to emerge from the Spring/Summer 2012 shows was that leather is no longer the reserve of the winter months — with labels including Hermès, Céline, Balmain and Margiela all championing the material in its various forms. Winter’s leather shorts minus tights and teamed with a sheer blouse makes for an on-trend Spring/Summer 2012 look à la 3.1 Phillip Lim. However, if you do want to invest in something new in the material, lighter tones and minimalist cuts provide a far less wintery aesthetic — Topshop has a variety of neon colored leather jackets for Spring/Summer 2012.

Item to revive from Spring/Summer 2011: the pleated skirt

The influence of ballet thriller Black Swan on the fashion world for Spring/Summer 2011 saw an array of balletic silhouettes dominating the catwalk, and fashionistas who invested in the ubiquitous pleated skirt will be glad to know it’s back for another season. This style ruled the runways at Spring/Summer 2012 shows including Chloé, Etro and Erdem, and can be easily updated for the coming months. For example, combining with a crop top (big news at Spring/Summer 2012 presentations including Versace/D&G and Alexander Wang) will offer an edgier take on the style. Meanwhile, high street retailers including H&M have their own take on the trend, with pleated pencil skirts among the highlights for the coming months.

Items to swap: forget skinny slacks, go wide leg

Since their re-emergence in the early 2000s, slimline slacks have become a wardrobe staple and despite the palazzo pant’s brief moment in the spotlight for Spring/Summer 2011, wide leg trousers have been left in the sidelines. But this is all about to change for Spring/Summer 2012, after labels ranging from Nina Ricci to L.A.M.B. and Roksanda Illincic went for slouchy, ultra wide trousers — many with a high waist. The look has taken to the high street too, from retailers such as Maje to more mass-market brands including H&M picking up on the trend for Spring/Summer 2012. This look works best pared down with a simple T-shirt and ballerina shoes. Petite ladies should add wedges to avoid being swamped by all the excess material.

2012 Oscars Red Carpet Report Card

Angelina Jolie
Grade: A+

After Angelina Jolie flashed that leg on the red carpet, no one was even paying attention to what the “In the Land of Blood and Honey” director was actually wearing! The actress’ black Atelier Versace gown featured a thigh-slit, which the daring Jolie worked every chance she got throughout the night. At the end of her stems? Salvatore Ferragamo peep-toe pumps.

Gwyneth Paltrow
Grade: D

There were lots of white gowns at the Oscars, but the most unusual one had to be Paltrow’s Tom Ford ensemble. The dress itself was perfectly lovely, but the cape was bizarre. Thankfully, she shed it once she hit the stage to present Best Documentary Feature. Too bad her helmet hair was still there.

Emma Stone
Grade: A

Now that’s a statement dress. Stone hit the Oscars in a Giambattista Valli Couture gown that boasted a high neck with a giant bow. A simple bun and Louis Vuitton jewels rounded out her stylish ensemble.

Sandra Bullock
Grade: B

Sandra Bullock’s white-and-black crepe Marchesa gown was OK at first glance, but looked much better from behind thanks to its beautifully draped back. The actress added some fun to the look with an “I Dream of Jeannie”-esque ponytail.

Jennifer Lopez
Grade: A

The “American Idol” judge dared to bare … and it paid off. Lopez’s plunging Zuhair Murad gown not only caused a ruckus on the red carpet, but during the Oscar broadcast as well. When she was onstage presenting with Cameron Diaz, the Internet was buzzing about the fact that she had suffered a wardrobe malfunction … but it seems her double-sided tape did its job just fine.

Brad Pitt
Grade: A-

Though he did look pretty spiffy in his Tom Ford tuxedo, the Actor in a Leading Role nom admitted it’s “much easier” for men to get dressed for the Oscars than their female counterparts. It’s probably easier for them to do their hair, too. What did you think of his slicked-back ‘do?

Viola Davis
Grade: A

“The Help” best actress nominee left her wig at home (as she’s been doing quite a bit lately) and showed off her newly dyed short red locks along with a gorgeous green Vera Wang gown, which featured a jewel-encrusted neckline. Davis’ best accessory? Her super-toned arms!

Cameron Diaz Grade: B+

The “Bad Teacher” actress flaunted her buff arms and fab physique in a strapless silk Gucci Premiere gown. But the big question is … are you feeling her newly cropped locks?

Octavia Spencer
Grade: A

Before she nabbed the award for Actress in a Supporting Role, “The Help” star had already won on the red carpet in an off-white jeweled Tadashi Shoji gown that gathered at the waist, paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Judith Leiber jewels. Although Octavia had three different options for her Oscars look, she wisely went with the Japanese designer, who has dressed her for each of the awards shows this season.

Sean “Diddy” Combs
Grade: A

Before he even hit the red carpet, the music mogul, who executive-produced the Best Documentary winner “Undefeated,” was spotted being primped by two assistants (one armed with a lint roller), outside his limo. All the extra effort was worth it: Diddy looked uber-dapper in his tux.

Penelope Cruz
Grade: B

The Spanish siren looked Jacqueline Kennedy-esque as she floated down the red carpet in an organza Giorgio Armani off-the-shoulder gown.

Shailene Woodley
Grade: C-

The young star of “The Descendants” took a risk when she donned this long-sleeve white Valentino Couture gown, which she topped off with a sleek bun and Harry Winston gems. While she said the dress was “so incredibly” her, we think it drastically ages the 20-year-old starlet.

Kristen Wiig
Grade: B

The “Bridesmaids” star — who was nominated for writing the comedy’s screenplay — glammed it up in a nude J.Mendel gown and Neil Lane bangles. We just wish that Wiig would have done something with her hair, which had very little body to it and dressed down the entire look.

The Dictator
Grade: F (for funny)

What else would you expect from Sacha Baron Cohen in character as “The Dictator”? The actor sported a uniform by John Galliano, socks from Kmart, and scored the biggest laughs of the night when he spilled the “ashes” of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il all over an unsuspecting Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

Jessica Chastain
Grade: A-

“The Help’s” best supporting actress nominee looked absolutely lovely in her romantic black-and-gold Alexander McQueen gown, which she accessorized with loose red tresses and $2 million worth of yellow Harry Winston diamonds.

Stacy Keibler

Grade: C+

George Clooney’s gal pal may be gorgeous, but she failed to impress in her gold lame off-the-shoulder Marchesa creation and lackluster blond locks.

Melissa McCarthy
Grade: D

While we adore the funny lady, she majorly disappointed in her custom Marina Rinaldi gown. Don’t you think the best supporting actress nominee could have done a little better when choosing the perfect dress for her big night?

Michelle Williams
Grade: B

It looks kind of red to us, but the “My Week With Marilyn” star and best actress nominee described her chiffon Louis Vuitton dress as “coral” in an interview with Ryan Seacrest. Whatever the color, we could have done without the silver little-girl bow adornment.

Busy Phillips
Grade: C-

Williams’ BFF, “Cougar Town” actress Busy Phillips, was a mismatched mess in her gray Dolce & Gabbana gown, hot pink heels, and green-and-blue earrings.

Meryl Streep
Grade: B+

“The Iron Lady” must have had an inkling she was going to win the Best Actress award because she matched the color of her gold lame draped Lanvin gown to Oscar himself. During her acceptance speech, Streep (in vintage Fred Leighton earrings) thanked her colleagues and friends “for this inexplicably wonderful career.”

Milla Jovovich
Grade: A

The “Resident Evil” actress blew everyone away when she arrived wearing this gorgeous white Elie Saab Couture one-shoulder gown. Soft locks, red lips, Jacob & Co. jewels, and an Edie Parker box clutch perfectly complemented her ensemble.

Anna Faris
Grade: B+

The comedic actress went glam in a long-sleeve sequined Diane von Furstenburg gown and brand-new bobbed hairdo with bangs, giving the “What’s Your Number?” star a sultry — albeit older-than-usual — look.

Natalie Portman
Grade: B

What a difference a year makes! At the 2011 Oscars, where she won a statue for best actress, Portman was very pregnant with her son, Aleph. This year, she didn’t have to worry about dressing a baby bump, and selected a red polka dot 1954 Christian Dior Haute Couture vintage gown and sparkling Harry Winston jewels for the Hollywood event.

Glenn Close
Grade: A

She plays a woman pretending to be a man in “Albert Nobbs,” but legendary actress Glenn Close looked feminine and fabulous in a dark green strapless Zac Posen gown paired with a matching blazer adorned with satin lapels. Feathered hair and drop earrings completed her look.

Rose Byrne
Grade: A

The “Bridesmaids” beauty shimmered in her black sequined one-shoulder Vivienne Westwood dress. A sleek bob, Jimmy Choo heels, and Chanel Fine Jewelry completed her all-around classy look.

Rose Byrne
Grade: A

The “Bridesmaids” beauty shimmered in her black sequined one-shoulder Vivienne Westwood dress. A sleek bob, Jimmy Choo heels, and Chanel Fine Jewelry completed her all-around classy look.

Penelope Ann Miller
Grade: B+

“The Artist’s” Penelope Ann Miller dazzled in a form-fitting halter neck gown that she co-designed with Badgley Mischka. “I really wanted something that was ‘30s-inspired,” she noted on the red carpet, adding that she was also sporting a rare three-carat pink diamond ring and art-deco cuff by Blue Nile.

Kelly Osbourne
Grade: D

Yep, Kelly’s still rocking the grayish-purple hair and we have no idea why. The E! correspondent happened to be wearing a black Badgley Mischka gown with emerald-colored accents, but it almost doesn’t matter with an awful coif like that.

Judy Greer
Grade: A-

“The Descendants” actress went modern glam in this Monique Lhuillier design, which created killer curves for the petite star. Too bad Greer’s hair was so boring!

Tina Fey
Grade: A

The “30 Rock” star looked nothing like her dowdy character Liz Lemon at the Oscars! Fey, sporting a glam updo, put her best food forward in a midnight blue Carolina Herrera gown with peplum detail. Light blue Bulgari chandelier earrings completed her chic ensemble.

Ellie Kemper
Grade: B+

We don’t usually think of Ellie Kemper as being super sexy, but she certainly played the part in this strapless Armani Prive gown, which she described as “glittery rust.” Though the color perfectly matched her fiery-hued hair, the “Bridesmaids” actress’ blunt bangs could have used a bit of a trim, no?

Jonah Hill
Grade: B-

“Moneyball’s” best supporting actor nominee dared to be different by sporting a black-on-black tuxedo for the Academy Awards. Do you think he successfully pulled off the look?

Maya Rudolph
Grade: C

Unfortunately, Maya Rudolph’s plum Johanna Johnson dress — with its bejeweled cap sleeves and belt — didn’t seem like the perfect fit for the funny woman and “Bridesmaids” star.

Rooney Mara
Grade: A-

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” actress rocked a delicate white Givenchy Couture gown with a train from the designer’s Spring 2009 collection. Mara decided to forgo any accessories and simply went with her usual dramatic red lips and pulled-back hair.

Melanie Griffith
Grade: B

The 54-year-old actress was a sophisticated lady in a one-shoulder black gown by Yves Saint Laurent.

.

Wendi McLendon-Covey
Grade: B

The crass “Bridesmaids” actress cleaned up quite nicely for the Oscars in her princess-like pale pink gown, which she accessorized with Simon G. Jewels.

Melissa Leo
Grade: D

Last year’s best supporting actress Oscar winner bombed in this ill-fitting, belted, black-and-gold sequined Reem Acra creation, which she paired with Jimmy Choo shoes.

Missi Pyle
Grade: B

“The Artist” actress Missi Pyle popped a pretty pose in her sky blue Valentina Delfino strapless frock featuring a starburst belt embellishment. And her gown — made of organic silk and recycled polyester — didn’t just look good, it was good for the environment, too! Though Pyle wasn’t up for an award, her dress won the annual Red Carpet Green Dress contest.

Pharrell Williams
Grade: B-

Pharrell — who actually served as a music consultant for the night’s telecast — is known for his sense of style, but he donned a tuxedo jacket for the occasion that was a little too small and a velvet bow tie that was a little too big.

Leslie Mann
Grade: B+

The “Knocked Up” actress decided to forgo comfort for fashion in her super-tight navy Roberto Cavalli gown. Mann — who accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Brian Atwood shoes, and a Judith Leiber clutch — joked on the red carpet that she worried she wouldn’t be able to use the restroom all night.

Giuliana Rancic
Grade: B+

The always charming E! correspondent donned a stunning cap-sleeve Tony Ward creation that truly flattered her thin figure. The only negative? Her super-severe hairdo.

Jason Segel
Grade: B

For his first-ever Oscars, the “Muppets” star didn’t disappoint and looked handsome in his tux — but his evening wasn’t without a wardrobe malfunction! Segel, who hit the Academy Awards to support his friend, Best Original Song winner Bret McKenzie, accidentally popped a few buttons off his tuxedo shirt early in the night, but he managed to fix himself up with some double-sided tape he borrowed from Nick Nolte’s date….

Sherri Shepherd

Grade: C

Though we appreciate “The View” co-host’s decision to wear a bold color, her half-sheer gown was way too busy up top and showed off more cleavage than we wanted to see. Sherri could have also benefited from a more supportive bra.

Virginia Madsen Grade: B-

The “Sideways” actress added a splash of color to the red carpet in a purple one-shoulder Kevin Hall ball gown, which she paired with emerald-and-diamond earrings.

Kate Mara

Grade: A-

The “American Horror Story” actress and sister of best actress nominee, Rooney Mara, went for a romantic look in a pale pink beaded Jack Guisso Couture creation, which she accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Brian Atwood heels.

Kelly Ripa Grade: B+

The morning talk show host showed off her teeny-tiny frame in a mint green Carolina Herrera halter dress with a black belt. Before the Oscars, Ripa noted she had three rules for the perfect dress: comfort, a complimentary color, and something that matched her personality. Seems like she succeeded on all counts!

Sarah Hyland
Grade: B-

The “Modern Family” star looked much older than her 21 years in a mauve asymmetrical Alberta Feretti gown, Neil Lane jewels, and Casadei shoes. Do you agree that the dress was a tad matronly for the young actress?

Jane Seymour
Grade: B-

Jane Seymour certainly proved that 61-year-olds can have fab figures too, but her plunging red gown made her look a little bit like a Vegas showgirl.

Julia Ormond
Grade: B-

There’s not much to say about the “My Week With Marilyn” actress’ blah one-shouldered black gown. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t anything to write home about … and neither was her slightly curled hair.

Lea Thompson Grade: B

Actress Lea Thompson — who had a part in last year’s “J. Edgar” — sparkled in this silver empire-waist gown. We wish she’d left the giant wrap at home, though.

Trendy Ways to Wear Your Hair Up in 2011

The secret to a fabulous and stylish appearance doesn’t stand only behind a cool and trendy fashionable outfit but a stylish hairstyle as well. There are a myriad of hair styles out there to choose from but that doesn’t meant they all suit the current fashion trends. Since nothing is more annoying than having your hair stick to your neck in the summer heat, it bets to learn some trendy ways to wear your hair up in 2011, just to make sure you don’t step out of the diva-zone.

Women with medium to long tresses enjoy the possibility to play around and experiment with a myriad of stylish dos but spending hours in front of the mirror is just something that doesn’t appeal to most women. For this reason, quick and easy updo hairstyles have been developed, hairstyles which will make you look amazing while still saving some of that precious time you usually assign to styling. Choosing right is not easy, so to make things work a bit faster for you we have put together some cool and trendy ways to wear your hair up in 2011, hairstyles which are uber-popular this season and which suit most women.

Gucci

Chloe

Jill Sanders

Luca Luca

Sleek hairstyles look amazing and can most definitely make the best out of your facial features, as sleeked-up hairstyles accentuate heavily this area. Stylish neatly twisted or stacked buns that rest on top of the head, cute centered high ponytails as well as low buns, twisted chignons and vintage updos look amazing. Give these updos a try but not without making sure you’ve got a little bit of hair gel (or wax) and some bobby pins ready as they are absolutely necessary to achieve the look.

Francesco Hair

Michael Barnes Hair

KH Hair

Jean Louis David Hair

Braided updos are definitely stylish and help create a certain bohemian allure that attracts attention. There are numerous hair braiding techniques which you can turn towards to, techniques which can make a delight of your locks. Try a simple braided ponytail, braid your ponytail and wrap it around the base for a cool braided bun, braid a side ponytail, create a milk-maid style braid, or opt for a cool side braid updo that joins in the back for a stylish simplistic bun.
Let your imagination run wild and you’ll definitely be the center of attention.

Ponytail hairstyles look amazing and can pose as the easiest way to a trendy look. The best thing about ponytails is that they can be created on all hair textures and still look great. This effortless look will help you get out of a bad hair day so style your hair in a sleek high centered ponytail, a low ponytail as well as style your hair into a side ponytail and you’ll look great.

Obi-inspired sash belt

Obi Belts The biggest new belt trend is the obi belt – inspired by the sashes worn around the waist of a kimono. These belts are typically much wider than a normal belt, with either a sash or mini-belt closure. Like any other belt, the obi belt is incredibly versatile. Wear it to cinch your dress (like Alexander McQueen, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Jonathan Saunders, & Haiden Ackermann), your coat or jacket (like Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera & Burberry) or your top (like Donna Karan, Fendi, & Gucci).?

FALL 2011 TREND ALERT: OBI BELTS

There has been one trend that I am dying to talk about and it’s the OBI BELT. I have been seeing Asian influences everywhere for a few seasons now. The aesthetic itself is so elegant and is comprised of great silhouettes and colors. At couture, with Armani Prive presenting Japanese inspired floral prints, lush velvet tube dresses, and using the obi-belt as a major accessory, the Asian trend is officially blowing through the fashion world in full force.

I first saw the Obi belt popping up everywhere on the Spring runways with notable options from Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Haider Ackermann.  And for Fall, the waist defining accessory, or as I call it, the “Asian corset”, continues to dominate and emerges as a major Fall accessory. Designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Druo Olowu, Prabal Gurung, and Andrew Gn used it to belt not only robe-style garments but also updated the look using it to belt jackets and shirts, thus diversifying the accessory and widening its appeal. The Obi is probably the easiest way this Fall to play up the Asian trend as it gives a distinct silhouette that is both flattering and a great way to accompany all the heavy layers we will soon be piling onto ourselves.

Here are some great Fall Styles:

Halston F/W 2011 RTW

Roland Mouret F/W 2011 RW

Andrew Gn F/W 2011 RTW

Fatima Lopes F/W 2011 RTW

The style is translating well into the contemporary market also, here are some amazing and affordable examples from brands such as Imitation and Corey Lynn Calter, an obi over a cool jumpsuit is the perfect way to dress it up for a party.

And the trend can be seen in resort collections such as Marc by Marc Jacobs, DKNY, and Preen. Once all the florals arrive for Spring 2012, expect to see the Obi or the general Asian trend continue to blow through the runways.

Obi Belts

Summer’s all tied up with Orient-inspired obi belts offering an Eastern promise to summer wardrobes

  • The spring/summer 2011 collections delivered an Eastern promise – waists defined by obi belts.
  • Carolina Herrera’s polished cinchers had a graphic appeal, while Sonia Rykiel was more playful – tying hers over cardigans and paper-bag trousers.
  • Paul & Joe’s metallic obis are perfect for a dose of summer night glam, while there were sequinned options on the Louis Vuitton catwalk for extra sparkle.
  • At Gucci, they had a tribal feeling and came tied over skirts, jackets, trousers and dresses. Wear yours with bright colours and to break up a colour-blocked look or make like Haider Ackermann and make your own after a visit to the haberdashery store.

Punk Clothing – Spring Summer 2011 Fashion Trend

Punk princess has never actually left fashion world. She is said to have many faces but only one soul.
This time edgy means a combo of punk-rock and biker fashion. It’s a great idea because most of us can’t decide what they actually prefer.

: Biker Chic

In a spring 2011 season punk gets back in a mature and a truly chic way: a punk princess deceitfully wears leather leggings to a perfectly tailored jacket. Leather jackets, distressed shorts, lace-up boots with safety-pins and studs (here and there) are accompanied with the openwork sweaters () or jackets (). In punk-rock shows up in a de luxe version taking advantage of the perfect combination of pretty meets punk.

Nandi says, “I was wondering if you could do a post on the Spring and Summer trends for 2011? If you can that would be great!”

Sure thing! Though we’ve done some extensive Spring shopping posts, we have indeed neglected to break down what you’ll need to be on trend for the summer months.

3. Crochet

As seen at: Gucci, Christian Dior, Emilio Pucci, and ADAM.

Spring Trends 2011: Jumpsuit

(L-R) Yves Saint Laurent , Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli &  Gucci .

The jumpsuit is one of those pieces one can never go wrong with. One of the reasons I’m so in love with this look is because its a very chic garment , it accentuates a woman’s figure and any one can look fabulous in it . That’s why I think it should be one of  your  must- have looks for this spring / summer. Personally I love nice feminine tailored looks, and its no exception for the jumpsuits.  Weather it’s skin tight , flowy , flare , drapped or straight,  picking the right one plays an important role on how you are going to wear / style it properly.   It is also all about the fit.  Designers such as  Marc Jacobs, Sonia Rykiel ,Oscar de La Renta and especially Gucci emphasized on this trend as they had a lot of jumpsuits in their  Spring / Summer 2011 collections.

All of the above looks can be found on asos.com, except the third look which is from the tibi collection and you can find at the outnet.com

Even celebrities love the jumpsuit. Check out Chanel Iman  above  in a Micheal Kors gold metalic jumpsuit . I found a similar look for less on frenchconnection.com.   Also, Angela Simmons wore a Rachel roy animal print jumpsuit to the Betsey Jonhson fashion show. It is a fierce look and also affordable.

Check out our choices of more affordable alternatives to the high end designer brands  below. Be a trend setter and strutt your stuff with one of the ‘must have item’ this season.

Your Fashion Future

If You Loved…Black Lace

Romantic but super sexy, black lace was everybody’s favourite choice for high-octane partywear this Christmas. Emma Watson went gothic on the red carpet in this sultry number, the high street was awash with über-cool bargain alternatives, and the autumn catwalks –from Dolce & Gabbana to Donna Karan – saw plenty of action from this ultra-glam fabric, too.

You Should Try…Spring’s Lace

The Catwalk Inspiration: Erdem (pictured), Christopher Kane, Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana

Lace lovers needn’t worry – while the midnight shades will look too dressy when spring swings around, there’s a whole new palette of colours to play with. Go for confident reds á la Erdem if you dare, or vintage-look nudes as seen at Dolce & Gabbana.

If You Loved…Red Dresses

From very tuned-in statement pops of colour on heels, handbags and scarves to bold, look-at-me dresses in scarlet, tomato, claret and cherry, red was the colour to be noticed in this season.

You Should Try…Tangerine

The Catwalk Inspiration: Prada (pictured), Cacharel, Giambattista Valli, Christian Dior, Marni

Bear with us on this one! Though orange might not initially seem like the most appealing of wardrobe shades, we saw it all over the spring catwalks worked in all kinds of cool ways. Our favourite? Invest in a little fake bake, then rock this colour as a tropical print dress with contrasting hot pink and turquoise accessories.

If You Loved…Camel Colours

The coat of this season? It has to be the classic camel number: eternally chic, works with everything – it was the best investment buy of the last six months! And that’s not where the craze stopped either – serious stylists were trying out the trend as 70s-inspired trousers and sweaters, too…

You Should Try…Neon Brights

The Catwalk Inspiration: Christopher Kane (pictured), Jil Sander, Acne, Celine, Jason Wu, DKNY, Versace

…Buuut, what better way to forget winter’s grey days than spring’s mega brights. No, this isn’t neons the nu rave way – for 2011 acid hued pieces are taking a grown-up turn. Look out for ladylike dresses and cropped jackets in sunshine shades, or have a go at matching zingy trousers or shorts with a simple white or grey tee.

If You Loved…Minimalism

Understated luxury, pared-back chic and unassuming elegance were all buzzphrases for winter – think Calvin Klein’s no-frills approach to dressing. Celebs like Angelina and rival Jennifer Aniston loved this trend’s grown-up feel and its muted palette of greys, navies, blacks and nudes.

You Should Try…Crisp Whites

The Catwalk Inspiration: Practically all of them! Our top tips include DSquared (pictured), Stella McCartney, Fendi and Michael Kors

Those of us with a hankering for even more simplicity will have found it in this spring’s obsession with utilitarian whites. Forget the floaty, peasant numbers of the Sienna Miller days, because we’re talking futurism this spring – clean lines, and sharp, crisp and precisely tailored pieces.

If You Loved…Shearling

Before autumn had even started, we couldn’t move without seeing a forward-thinking lady sporting one of these aviator-style leather jackets, and, inspired by Alexa Chung, Nicola Roberts and the Burberry models, the trend carried on well into the end of last year.

You Should Try…Spring Leather

The Catwalk Inspiration: Balmain (pictured), Gucci, Celine

For a similar rock chick, Kate Moss vibe, have a go at working leather as the weather warms up. It doesn’t have to be hot ‘n’ sticky: skintight styles are totally passé anyway, so snap up loose-fitting shorts, skater-esque skirts and sleeveless tank tops which can be layered over knitted tights and sweaters until the sun starts coming out.

If You Loved…Animal Print

The leopard print faux fur coat’s become a winter staple in the GLAMOUR.COM girls’ wardrobes, but that’s not where this trend ended. Heating up our evening wear, we spotted wild at heart prints on every A-lister from Fearne to Rachel Bilson, and on plenty of mini-dresses and accessories during party season.

You Should Try…Tribal Prints

The Catwalk Inspiration: Diane Von Furstenberg (pictured), Missoni, Derek Lam

Animal print purists will be pleased to know the look’s definitely sticking around for another season, but if you’re into test-driving something new, pick up jumpsuits, harem pants and batwing t-shirts in patterns inspired by every corner of the globe.

If You Loved…English Heritage

Barbour jackets, leather riding boots and cable knits: countryside staples made a comeback this winter, thanks to trend champion Alexa Chung and the über-cool catwalks of Great British institutions Paul Smith and Topshop. Tweeds, plaids, sheepskin and wool all went from musty to must-have in a couple of months.

You Should Try…Tropical Fruit Prints

The Catwalk Inspiration: Moschino Cheap & Chic (pictured), Stella McCartney, Betsey Johnson, Prada

An easy to way to channel the quirkiness of the heritage trend in a spring-friendly way! Delve into a veritable fruit bowl of inspiration – retro banana, orange, lemon and pineapple prints make the coolest finish to this spring’s dresses and short-sleeved shirts.

If You Loved…Maxi Skirts

Even when summer was over, we couldn’t get enough of floor-sweeping hems. The winter way to wear maxis was 90s-style: grunged-up, with chunky work boots, heavy, holey sweaters and faux furs, like Brit It-girls Fearne Cotton and Daisy Lowe.

You Should Try…Mid-Calf Hems

The Catwalk Inspiration: Fendi (pictured), Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu

Change it up by getting in touch with your inner lady (you know, the one who really wouldn’t approve of your slightly chipped nail polish and the run in your tights) and invest in one these utterly feminine, totally timeless numbers. Works best with heels ‘n’ tights or simple sandals when it’s warm.

If You Loved…Mad Men Styling

Whether it was Joan, Peggy or Betty whose style you wanted to steal, the Mad Men effect gave us a retro fabulous winter of swishing circle skirts, cinched in waists and hourglass figures – with Dita Von Teese as the look’s most famous face.

You Should Try…Revisiting The 70s

The Catwalk Inspiration: Salvatore Ferregamo (pictured), Temperley London, Marc Jacobs, Etro

Flares, high-waistbands, floppy hats and headscarves: you better believe it because the 70s is spring/summer 2011’s defining decade. All the most famous silhouettes are back, as are round-rimmed sunnies, big hair and anything that would have worked at Studio 54. Go forth and stock up (or just raid your mum’s wardrobe).

7 Ways to Update Your Look

Try these one-step hair and makeup tips for a new, on-trend style for the new year.

Subtle Highlights
Brighten up your color with subtle, shiny highlights. Redken Creative Consultant for Color, Tracy Cunningham, thinks the metallic trend from the spring runways will also be huge for hair. Here, Anne Hathaway’s dark chestnut shade has hints of shimmery gold threads.

Half-Up Hair Is Back
Camilla Belle’s half-up style is a serious upgrade from the casual version of years past. Volume is the key to modernizing the look.

Only Line Your Top Lid
While the smoky eye isn’t going anywhere, here’s a look that’s equally sexy but a bit crisper. Try the combination of big lashes and liquid liner for a modern twist. Here, January Jones wears a hint of shimmery shadow in the inner corners of her eyes for extra brightness.

Try an Updo
From braids to chignons, hairstyles are getting higher. Zoe Saldana’s milkmaid braids are simultaneously youthful and elegant.

Bright Lips
From Fendi to Gucci to Jil Sander, we saw bright lips everywhere in every shade. Oranges, reds and pinks were all popular, but this pretty fuchsia on Natalie Portman gets our vote for wearability.

Amp-Up Your Ponytail
We saw countless ponytails on the spring 2011 runways — from BCBG to Tory Burch. The key to making this style more night-out than night-in is volume — lots of it. Tease, scrunch, and curl before pulling back your hair.

Don’t be Afraid of Color
The models in Jason Wu’s spring 2011 runway show wore a rainbow of eyeshadow shades. Here, Emily Blunt opts for a more wearable pale blue-gray, which complements her bare, pink lips.

Shoe Trends Fall 2011 From Milan’s Runway

Gucci fall ’11?

Designers were channeling the 1930s for fall, showing decidedly ladylike footwear silhouettes topped off with thin ankle straps. Matching shoe styles were the call of the day at Gucci, Moschino and Brioni, where prints were brought down from the apparel to create a continuous look. Giuseppe Zanotti and Gianvito Rossi took their jewel-toned platforms up a notch with sexy-yet-delicate ankle straps on round-toe pumps. Albino went for an elegant touch with fur-embellished classic pointy toe pumps featuring a contrast ankle strap for extra interest.

Top row, from left: Albino fall ‘11; Giuseppe Zanotti fall ‘11; Brioni fall ‘11. Bottom row, from left: Gianvito Rossi fall ‘11; Versus fall ‘11; Moschino fall ‘11.

Top row, from left: Dolce & Gabbana fall ‘11; Emporio Armani fall ‘11; Moschino Cheap & Chic fall ‘11. Bottom row, from left: Prada fall ‘11; Pucci fall ‘11; Sergio Rossi fall ‘11

Whether lime, emerald or olive, green popped up on many a runway for fall ’11. Moschino Cheap & Chic opted for a cheeky take on the ubiquitous menswear-inspired trend with a lime-green metallic kiltie loafer, while Dolce & Gabbana and Pucci both showed more ladylike styles in emerald hues. Prada was all about trompe l’oeil footwear this season, with knee-high suede boots in an asparagus color featuring bright-green snakeskin to create an ankle-strap pump look. Emporio Armani favored grass-green suede booties worn with cropped black pants, while Sergio Rossi was playing on an “Eyes Wide Shut” theme, with mask-like ankle lacing on jade velvet pumps.

Jimmy Choo Fall ’11

Subtlety is back in style. Designers kept their embellishments feeling fresh for fall by starting with classic silhouettes in nude tones and then playing with ton-sur-ton crystals and touches of metallic for extra shine. Jimmy Choo catered to its red-carpet celebrity clients with a finished suede undersole and heel completely encrusted in Swarovski crystals to sparkle from every angle. Le Silla, Burak Uyan, and Edmundo Castillo for Santoni Rose Collection also indulged in glamorous heel interest, while Casadei and Rene Caovilla kept it classic with an elegant jeweled pump and evening sandal. Sergio Rossi mastered the art of the evening bootie with a blush satin style featuring plenty of glitz, but executed it in an understated color palette for an all-around beautiful design.
