What Were They Thinking?!

This week’s worst-dressed celebs include Vanessa Hudgens, Lindsay Lohan, and Pam Anderson. — By Matt Whitfield, Yahoo! Staff

Vanessa Hudgens was spotted in spots as she exited a studio in Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the former “High School Musical” hottie’s hot pants were far from heat-seeking. Thanks to an abnormally-high waist, cheesy cheetah print, and zippered fly, Van’s shorts resembled ferocious granny panties. A melodramatic pose, gold curtain panel/cape, and “Look at me; I’m a bad girl” boots rounded out her ridiculous look. (8/1/2012)

Speaking of unsightly shorts, check out the ravaged denim pair Lindsay Lohan recently donned during a shopping excursion to XIV Karats in Beverly Hills. In addition to a few handbags and over-sized shades, the troubled starlet accessorized with a crumpled chapeau and pack of her beloved Parliament Lights. (8/1/2012)

Perhaps it’s just us, but we think former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger is far too sexy to be seen in public swimming in this tent-sized debacle of a dress. Discuss! (7/31/2012)

Remember when Cynthia Nixon was a sharp-dressed redhead who stomped through the streets of NYC in luxurious designer clothing as one of “Sex and the City’s” fab four? Needless to say, those days are over. (7/30/2012)

The canary color of this Versus dress — worn by Katy Perry to the “Part of Me” movie premiere in Rio de Janeiro — was spot on. Unfortunately, the frock’s diamond-shaped cut-outs exposed a bit too much of her bust, taking the garment from trendy to tacky. (7/30/2012)

Kris Jenner is a brilliant businesswoman, who has taken her family’s lack of talent and turned them into global brands. Sadly, we’ll give her credit for that. What we won’t give her props for is the outfit she allowed her 16-year-old daughter, Kendall, to wear while the two went on a shopping spree in NYC on Tuesday. Then again, Kendall’s half sister, Kim Kardashian, made a name for herself by flashing some skin in a homemade movie with Ray J back in the day. (7/31/2012)

Annalynne McCord

Mischa Barton

And last but not least we have former “Baywatch” babe Pam Anderson … sans pants … again. When will she learn that a button-down shirt does not a dress make? We already know the answer: never! (7/31/2012)

New celeb fashion trend! Underwear as outerwear!

We’ve spotted a new trend among the A-list – wearing their underwear as outerwear.

Katy Perry

Another star who consistently loves her weird and wonderful stage costumes is Katy Perry. During one of her many changes as host of the MTV Europe Music Awards, Miss Perry flaunted her curves in a corset and heart-adorned knickers.

Katy Perry

Another high-energy performance, another barely-there costume for Katy! The singer hit the stage at V Festival in a jewel-encrusted bra and high-waisted hot pants.

Lady Gaga

How we love the Lady and her wonderfully bizarre sartorial selections… The Gaga’d one was a lady in red for a recent television performance.

Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce is one woman who’s not afraid to show off her curves. The megastar took to the stage for her latest tour in this gold corseted creation.

Fergie

Fergie and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas provided the musical entertainment at the recent Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and continued the underwear-as-outerwear theme in this emerald green ensemble.

Chloe Sevigny

On paper this look just shouldn’t work, but on Chloe it so does.

Lily Allen

As the latest Chanel muse, Miss Allen was the first celeb to be snapped in these sexy stocking/tights and now everyone’s following suit.

Paris Hilton

A flash of a simple black bra and it makes this dress go so-so to so sexy.

Katie Holmes

This is the ladylike way to show your bra – under a plain, sheer top – well done Katie.

Rihanna

Rihanna: another day, another front row seat at a catwalk show, another fierce outfit.

Miquita Oliver

Just a hint of stocking top is all you need to work the trend – just like Miquita.

Lily Allen

We’re not so sure about this – yes. the sailor playsuit is cute, but the stockings, too?

Zoe Saldana

Nice contrast between the dusty pink bra, baby blue shirt and burgundy skirt – the light textures stop Zoe Saladana looking tarty.

Tayor Momsen

Our fave gothic girl! And the attitude she’s wearing just adds to the appeal.

Lily Allen

We hadn’t really noticed before, but Lily really likes this underwear-as-outwear thing.

Amy Winehouse

Since getting her new boobs – which apparently cost £5,000 – Amy hasn’t been able to stop flashing her new chest or her new bras.

Lady Gaga

Let’s face it, this is not a new trend for Miss Gaga, when is she ever not showing off her undies?

Lady Gaga

Perhaps one of La Ga’s craziest looks to date? She’s clearly a fan of the lace body suit, this time opting for a racy red version, sans bra…

Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce Knowles got pulses racing when she performed on-stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards in nothing but a skin-tight leotard, suspenders and stockings.

Back-to-School Celebrity Style Inspiration

Get cool ideas for your own fall outfits by rocking this year’s biggest trends just like your favorite celebs!

Metallic Sparkle

While Glee’s Rachel may not win any best-dressed awards at William McKinley high school, Lea Michele proves that she definitely knows a thing or two about style off set. You’ll never go wrong with an eye-catching metallic jacket like this one; rock it for any occasion where you want to impress, from a big class presentation to an after-school study date.

Bright Tribal

From cropped tees to flirty dresses, bright tribal prints are everywhere this season—and Ashley Tisdale’s take on fall’s hottest trend shows just how versatile it can be! Channel her style for Homecoming by rocking a similar shimmery mini with nude heels and glowing skin.

Wedge Sneakers

Willow Smith’s pumped-up kicks are the ideal combo of sporty and chic. With sneakers like these, dressing casual has never looked so glam!

Mixing Prints

Emma Watson has the magic touch when it comes to navigating the tricky territory of mixing patterns. For back-to-school style, it’s all about keeping things versatile—and that’s why we’re head-over-heels with Emma’s vintage-inspired look. Take a cue from this style star and try pairing floral prints with geometric patterns to add some fun to your fall wardrobe!

Peplum

Victoria Justice’s peplum top is a little bit sweet and a whole lot of fun. With a tucked-in waist and ruffled hem, this silhouette gives you an instant hourglass figure. Pair it with your hottest skinnies, like Vic did here, or wear it with a body-con skirt for a back-to-school bash!

Neon and Neutral

Seventeen’s West Coast Fashion Correspondent Kylie Jenner proves that sometimes, all you need to pull together the perfect look is a pair of attention-grabbing pants. Complement bright bottoms like these with a classic white tee to complete the breezy-chic look.

Denim on Denim

Glee star Jenna Ushkowitz is no stranger to high school fashion or denim trends (she just launched her own line for Wall Flower Jeans). Snag her laid-back look by pairing a chambray shirt with black jean shorts, and you’re sure to earn high marks in the style department.

Bright Denim

Zendaya Coleman definitely knows how to Shake It Up on the red carpet. Her fun purple jeans, classic graphic tee, and fitted black blazer are polished, yet casual—a perfect combination for the first day of school!

Studded Shoe

Move over ballet flats and loafers — there’s a new trendy shoe in town! Studded oxfords are the ultimate in rockstar footwear (well, studded boots might trump those) and they’re an instant accessory that doesn’t take time to put on. If edgy is the vibe you’re going for, steal Alexa Chung’s black skinny pants and a bomber jacket combo. Leave it to those supermodels to always look stylish and effortless!

Sweater Dress

You know what makes Katy feel like a Teenage Dream? Rocking something comfortable on her day off! All those tight, tiny dresses have got to get a little tiresome, right? A long sweatshirt worn over tights or leggings is just right for class, and then maybe a date later. After all, if you’re looking for Firework to happen between you and your guy, you are not going to want to be uncomfortable!

Lace Top

Selena’s shirt top is pretty and versatile! Pair it with tailored shorts and cutout heels like the Biebs’ main squeeze did here, or throw in on over a burnout tank and faded skinny jeans for a more relaxed vibe.

Boho Scarf

This is the perfect look to attract a hottie — and Blake should know — she’s snagged everyone from Penn to Ryan! An oversized scarf in a paisley or tribal print stands out and looks trendy, without trying too hard. Pair it with a menswear inspired fedora, patterned tights, and a flirty skirt. Then, wait for the guys to flock…

Harem Pants

This might seem like one of those trends that’s hard to wear, but it’s actually not! As long as your pants are more tailored towards the ankle, you won’t end up looking like you’re rocking PJ’s — we promise. Try the look with pumps to make it more dressy, like Jessica Stroup did here, and fabrics with a little sheen to them look more luxe.

Feather Accessories

Feather earrings, hair extensions, shirt strings — wherever you look, there’s a celeb showing off this indie-inspired flair! If you don’t want to be tamed like Miley, get involved with feathers! Hers look so cute hanging from a sheer linen shirt.

Floral Dress

Jessica Lowndes’ outfit is the perfect thing to wear when seasons are changing. Her floral dress still embraces summer fun, but the navy booties give this look an edge and hint towards fall. Style your hair in half up, half down, loose waves and you’re ready to take on school!

Boyfriend Blazer

Knit beanie? Check. Vintage looking oxfords? Check. Boyfriend? Ummm, her next song will probably spill all, but boyfriend blazer? Check! Taylor hits all the fashion high notes with this casual, yet, sophisticated number.

Pleated Skirt

There’s nothing Gritty about this outfit! Hailee’s pleated skirt and short navy jacket look is girly-meets-grownup glamour at its best!

Lightweight Cardi

Even Pretty Little Liars know layers are key when it comes to the fall — one minute it’s warm and the next it’s chilly! Ashley Benson rocks her black cardi over leather leggings and a silky white top, but it’s a good idea to stash a few of these in your locker or bag, to have just in case the weather changes last minute.

Cropped Jean Jacket

Emma Roberts proves you can totally mix denim trends by sporting a light jean jacket, dark skinnies, and neutral belt and shoes! This look can take you from class, to lunch, to meetings in style!

Celebrity hair: blonde vs brunette

As Tulisa becomes the latest star to go from brunette to blonde, take a look at other celebrities who have made the switch.
TULISA CONTOSTAVLOS

Tulisa is the latest celebrity to turn from brunette to blonde arriving at the High Court for her sex tape scandal case with a mane of golden curls. Well, gold tinged with orange – the downside of dramatic dye-jobs. Although her hair was overly dark before, we still prefer her as a brunette, she just needs to go for a softer, more golden brown next time.

RIHANNA

Rihanna’s tried nearly every colour of the spectrum on her locks, but after a couple of months of platinum style, she unveiled her newly dark hair to a film premiere just yesterday: a vast improvement on those brassey tones, we say.

JESSICA STAM

Next up on the hair-dying scene, eternally blonde model Jessica Stam has turned to the dark side, and though her pretty face could carry almost anything off, we miss the blue-eyed blonde from before.

CRYSTAL RENN

This model just loves a change. First she goes from plus-size to sample-size, and now she’s ditched her gorgeous shiny black hair for this brassey blonde. A change too far? We think so too.

CHERYL COLE

After public X Factor humiliation and a messy divorce, Cheryl unveiled a new blonde ‘do. Ageing and yellow-y we bet her bosses at L’Oreal were shaking their heads.

AGYNESS DEYN

The cheeky Mancunian model burst onto the scene with her platinum bob and despite dalliances with jet black (and flaming red) she’ll always be a blonde in our eyes.

ABBEY LEE KERSHAW

Much as we loved her girl-next-door mouse, top model Abbey Lee’s bleached blonde tresses suit her rock-chic style.

BEYONCÉ

Any colour in the world wouldn’t taint the Queen of Cool, Beyonce.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

Oh wow… In her WAG glory days VB was a bona fide boob-y blonde, but fast forward a few years and a successful fashion label later, and Beckham’s a leading brunette. Much better.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Though Johansson’s pretty face could carry most colours, that Monroe-esque glamour looks that much better topped off with platinum curls.

CAREY MULLIGAN

Blonde? Brunette? Whichever. Everyone’s favourite actress Carey Mulligan can do no wrong in our eyes!

REESE WITHERSPOON

Experiment as she might, Reese Witherspoon will always be the ultimate blonde.

RACHEL McADAMS

Some people just have all the luck: McAdams is a total beauty both ways.

KYLIE MINOGUE

Eek! That dark brown hair is too severe for pint-sized pop princess Kylie Minogue.

KATY PERRY

A very good example of why those with dark hair should reconsider blonde: it’s called green.

CAMERON DIAZ

Though we loved Cameron’s dalliance with dark locks, she’s the ultimate beach babe and should have blonde locks to match.

JESSICA ALBA

Honey-coloured skin and luscious brown hair, Jessica Alba’s dark Latin colouring needs no messing with.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

‘The Hunger Games’ star dyed her natural blonde locks brown for her turn the film – a move which cost $30,000 – so that she she could get just the right hue of chesnut the first time around.

KATE MOSS

Time might have fooled observers into thinking supermodel Kate Moss is a natural blonde, but that is definitely not the case. Moss embraced her natural hue circa 1999.

SIENNA MILLER

The ultimate blue-eyed blonde, actress Sienna Miller experimented with dark dresses almost 10 years ago. We’re firmly in the blonde is best camp.

CHARLIZE THERON

Hollywood beauty Charlize could probably pull off green hair if she wanted to, but we’re big fans of her beachy-blonde mane.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD

Actress and style chameleon Evan Rachel co-ordinated her dye job to porcelain skin when dark, and warm foundation when blonde. We think her gothic side is the most dramatic.

DREW BARRYMORE

Youthful actress or Hollywood glamazon? Drew’s whole persona changes with a slick of the dye.

Get the look: Flapper fashion

1920s revival

Katy Perry wowed on the red carpet last month when she stepped out in a vintage Nolan Miller silk dress and a jewelled headband. The Firework singer was certainly channelling the roaring ’20s, and it seems she is not alone when it comes to working this trend – which was seen at Gucci’s spring/summer 12 shows, as well as on the catwalk at Etro, Chanel and Roberto Cavalli.

‘The 1920s look was revolutionary – women were no longer restricted by corsets, and for the first time ever, showed off some leg, although hemline remained below the knee for most of the decade,’ says Lena Weber, founder of the Vintage Guide to London.

When you’re trying to achieve this Gatsby-esque look keep your eye out for drop waists and geometric shapes. The look is pale and interesting – so avoid fake tan, and keep it looking modern with a pulled-back pony and minimal make-up.

Diane is certainly channelling her inner Daisy Buchanan in this grey Chanel dress and glittering clutch. We adore her pinned finger wave hairstyle.

Emma shows off her enviable pins in this fringed hem Bottega Veneta lace dress.

Evan is wearing the Gucci dress which helped sparked the ’20s trend earlier this year. The choice of art deco colours enhances the dress and Rachel’s gold nail polish perfectly complements the look.

Zoe’s Lanvin dress adds a perfect twist of modernity to the ’20s look. The fringing nods to the bygone era while the bold colours bring the dress completely up to date.

Blake shimmers in this Marchesa gown. We love the green applique around the bust and the deco drop earrings are to die for.

Wearing Alberta Ferretti, Amanda looks every inch a flapper.

Vintage Chanel. Enough said…

She never fails to dazzle on the red carpet but Michelle Williams looked utterly divine in this Chanel gown. We are also coveting the scalloped clutch bag.

Kate dazzled in this flapper dress from the collection she designed for Topshop. We love the mix of a high street frock with designer Christian Louboutin shoes.

Summer 2012 Makeup & Fashion Trends

Every season has their trends and this summer is no different. Get new season ready with our need-to-know guide for what’s in this summer. Be assured, whether your swoon for fashion, love to change your hair, keep up with the lasted makeup trends or pamper your nails, there is something for everyone here.

Silver Metallic Eyes

Metal toned eyeshadow has been one of the hottest trends so far in 2012 and for now it looks like it’s here to stay. Reflective washes of white silver light up the brow bone and add sparkle and dimension to the eyelid. It’s perfect for an evening or party look. You can even use it for a soft wash of color on your lids to help open your eyes. For a great tutorial on a look like this check out “Party Makeup: Metallic Smokey Eye”.

Cat Eyes

Pull out your eyeliner ladies because cat eyes are in full force. The familiar flick of liner has returned to the outer corner of the eyes but now with a twist. The double edged cat eye is widely popular. You can achieve this by adding an extra wing at the end of your liner, one for the top and one for the bottom for double the drama.  Use color instead of sticking with the main stream black to add color and dimension to your eyes.

Sun Kissed Skin

In summer we start to crave the sun and the glow that comes along with it. Thanks to beauty manufactures, there are numerous ways to achieve that sun-kissed skin.  Inspired by athletes who spend most of their time outdoors; “sporty-cheeks” are this year’s way to glow. You can mimic the effects of being in the sun by contouring parts of the face with a soft peach bronzer. Just remember, if you are going for the sun-kissed look to keep the eyes and lips natural.

Rose Colored Lips

Lipstick is back! Women are in lipstick heaven and choosing bright, flashy, eye-catching shades. For our porcelain or fair skinned girls, or for those who want a great lip but don’t feel comfortable in reds, then this is the way to go.  Stick to the rose and pink shades but don’t be afraid to try a shade or two brighter than your normal one.   The picture above is Marlena’s Glamorous Neutral Look featuring Makeup Geek’s “Delightful” lipstick teamed up with NYX’s “Smokey Look” Mega Shine Gloss.

Red Lips

Lipsticks most iconic shade is back! Don’t let this intimidate you though, with so many different shades on the market there is a perfect red lip for everyone regardless of your skin tone. If you have fair skin choose a coral-red shade, any other skin tone can go with a true red or blue based red tone to pamper their lips. For help we have several videos all about red lips, we recommend; “Top 5: Red Lipstick (how to choose your red lipstick)”, “Red Lips for Every Skin Color”,  “How to Rock Red Lips”.

Mint Accents

This seems to be one of the hottest shades for summer this year. Whether you choose to wear it on your eyes, clothes or nails you are sure to be trendy with this color. This color also looks amazing with gold as an accent. On the runway mint was seen most as a “pop-of-color” or in color blocking. One of the biggest trends with mint is to have it on your nails. Photo curtesy  imgfave.

Ombre Nails

Ombre hair has been everywhere this year and it looks like the nails are following close behind.  And since you can mix and match colors the possibilities are endless. There are two variations of this, paint each nail a different shade of the same color to give your hand an Ombre look, and the gradient nail. With so many tutorials on YouTube you can recreate this look in no time.  (Photo courtesy AcidTrix)

Tribal Nails

Tribal patterns are the hottest trend to hit the nail industry. Tribal design is a fashion print that has crossed the line onto nails. Whether you want a professional to do them, or create your own designs, the key to rocking this latest trend is to pick a design that compliments your natural style. For those who like things a bit wilder, opt for bigger and brighter prints. If you are more subdued choose prints that are smaller and lighter in color. A great way to get these is to try a nail wrap. These can be found in an assortment of brands and patterns and are easy to apply. (photo courtesy Emily’s Nail Files )

Braids, Twists & Ponytails

All of these are an easy way to spice up your hairstyle. It’s fast and easy and perfect on a hot day or one of those infamous bad hair days. The ponytail is back and easy to do. Wear it low, or slick and damp to achieve this season’s look. Braids and twists get graceful makeovers this season. One of the most popular braids is the waterfall braid with its elegant and simple look. The key to any of these looks is to look like you have put your hair up without giving it much thought.  If you’d like to see some of our recent braid tutorials, check out the Fishtail / Mermaid Braid, the Katniss Everdeen Braid, or the Curved Dutch Braid to Messy Bun tutorials.

Undone Waves

Beachy undone waves are always a summer favorite. (See Marlena’s Beachy Waves Hair Tutorial) This year’s trend is looser waves that makes the hair look like it was effortlessly done. The beach-ready style only requires a quick blow dry, subtle curl with the curling iron and raking your hands through your hair to create the right amount of “messiness”. Wear it parted on the side, or down the middle to give the barely-there curls your own style.

Colored Hair

It takes serious guts, or being a major celebrity, to pull off shockingly bright hair color. Stars like Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry are just a couple to change their locks to suit their mood. But you can add a touch of color to your hair without transforming all your hair. Try colors that compliment your skin tone. Fair skinned babes want to go with pastel shades like pale pink, lavender and baby blues. These colors also look great against blonde hair. If you have medium to darker skin tones, stick with jewel tones like emerald or deep purple. These also look great with darker haired girls. Try adding a streak or two in your hair, or buy an extension clip to try before committing to the shade.

Bangs

The bang is back, also known as fringe. Whether a deep side swept bang or a set of bangs all across your forehead, bangs are everywhere. Bangs are at their best when they are cut thick, blunt and long. They look remarkable with a bob, short crop or even long hair. If you are feeling a little adventurous you may even want to try the micro-bang. Where normal bangs should sweep the top of the eyebrows, a micro-bang is cut very short coming to the middle of the forehead or even a little above. Either way, the bang or fringe is a great way to give your hair a fresh updated look.

Fashion

Bold Prints

So maybe pushing the boundaries of fashion isn’t for everyone, but if you love bright colors, bold graphics or flower prints then this is the season for you! Regardless if it’s stripes, tribal, abstract or floral, every print is in. If you decide to rock a bold print dress, keep the shoes neutral. A great print shirt looks great with a sleek pencil skirt or jeans. Just keep the accessories to a minimum; the focus should be on the print. Mixing patterns is a great way to show off your individuality and creativity, just remember to let your print be the star of the show.

Bold and Blingy Appliqués

From face lace that goes around the eye and across the forehead, blinged out phone cases, studded nails and shoes, bling is everywhere. Add a pop of bling in your wardrobe by wearing a pair of studded heels like the ones we see Kim Kardashian wearing. Add lace or rhinestones to your nails with nail wraps or by a professional. With so many different ways to add bling to your wardrobe the possibilities are endless.

Peplum Skirts & Dresses

Also known as “crumb-catchers”, these are popping up everywhere, especially Hollywood. In case you didn’t know, peplum refers to a ruffle around the waist which adds volume while creating an hourglass figure. From shirts, skirts and dresses this is one trend you can’t go wrong with. They are fabulous and flattering and romantic all at the same time.

And there you have it, your trends for the summer of 2012. From hair, makeup, nails and fashion it’s all here. This season it’s all about color, from shades of mint, to bold patterns it’s all here. Just remember, the key to pulling off any good look is confidence. Let your inner beauty shine and the rest of you will be just as beautiful!

Hot Rod Pastels rev up for spring

Fashion-wise, winter is almost over, and as the weather gets warmer, your wardrobe will be full of yellows, pinks and blues – but not like you’ve ever seen before. The new style is more Lana Del Rey than Minor Danish Royal.

Hot Rod Pastels on the S/S 2012 catwalks for Jonathan Saunders (left) and Prada.

It may be winter outside, but in my heart it’s spring. Because in fashion, winter ends the moment the winter collections hit the sale rails (one wouldn’t be seen dead in a trend that has been marked down, obviously). Sherlock on a bad nicotine-withdrawal grump has more patience than a fashion editor who has moved on to the next season. So if you’re still dithering over which luxe parka/Lund jumper to buy, then I’m afraid you’re on your own – unless this winter gets a late PR windfall, eg photogenic snowfall or similar.

It is time to embark on what American Vogue calls “planning your new season’s wardrobe”. Whatever this phrase may mean within the Manhattan offices of Vogue, in the rest of the world it means flicking through some magazines until a few new-season images lodge themselves in your head, dragging some pieces that fit the bill from the last time those trends were in from the bottom of the wardrobe on to the ironing pile, and wondering if you can fit in a lunchtime race around the shops at some point in the next fortnight.

Old-school pastels: Infanta Elena of Spain at a wedding last summer.

Acid-free tissue paper and shoe boxes labelled with Polaroids are not required. But what this season does demand, and at your earliest convenience, is a complete rethink on the subject of pastels. I haven’t worn pastel colours for about two decades, essentially because as a grownup operating in the real world there is almost no circumstance in which lemon-yellow tailoring or a minty green knit doesn’t read a bit oddly. “Outfits for the prizegiving ceremony at a ballet school” is not a wardrobe category I have much call for.

But pastels have had a revamp. The roll call for the poster girls of the new pastel reads as follows: Laura Palmer, Betty Draper, Katy Perry and Lana Del Rey. My point is: minor Danish royalty need not apply. On the cover of the new British Vogue, the hot American model Arizona Muse wears £1,590 worth of broderie anglaise Prada in pale shades of blue and yellow, hands perched confidently on hips just above a coverline proclaiming the New Look. Pastel shades even have new, more interesting names. Ralph Lauren relaunched an elegant pale green as “celery”. Sky blue was

renamed “Laura Palmer Blue” by London designer Richard Nicoll, who wanted to conjure “a disturbed sense of calm”. This is the season of the Hot Rod Pastel: sugared almond shades with a dark side. Like Ocean Drive in Miami they are pretty as a picture, but have a narcotic buzz.

It all began with September’s round of catwalk shows. Jonathan Saunders and Christopher Kane‘s London shows were staged in spare, modern halls of concrete and glass – Saunders at the Paddington Central office building, Kane at One New Change – with the audience seated on minimalist bleachers. And then on to both catwalks, the designers sent colours more usually associated with tea rooms and well-stuffed sofas. Pistachio and rose, aqua and daffodil. A few days later, at Prada, the brand’s headquarters were transformed by set designer Rem Koolhaas into a David Lynchian reimagining of Detroit: oil-slicked streets, with cut-out Greased Lightning cars. And when the show started, the clothes came in the colours that until this season were seen only on the royal photocall outside church on Easter Sunday.

Hot Rod Pastel inspiration: Ocean Drive in the Art Deco district of Miami Beach, Florida.

We have all become experts in decoding the subtleties of neutrals. (Black is now professional rather than rock’n'roll; dirty grey is the new black for Kate Moss wannabes; navy is good for making you look a bit French; oatmeal is for people who are really into work-life balance.) But pastels present a whole new learning curve. Early intelligence suggests that pink, being the least unexpected of the pastels, will be left in the shade by blue, green and yellow tones. The ultimate power-dressing combination for spring 2012 is lemon yellow with ice blue, as already seen on the catwalk at Prada and Preen, and the cover of Vogue.

But what makes a look Hot Rod Pastel rather than Minor Danish Royal is a chaser of something fierce. At Prada the models wore wet-look, bad-girl hair with their broderie anglaise. At Jonathan Saunders they sported exaggerated black eyeliner flicks with their pistachio, apricot and raspberry tones. Louis Vuitton’s crocodile-skin court shoes in lemon yellow have a dagger-sharp toe-cap in silver. Spring is here all right. The question is, are you brave enough to wear it yet?

Week in style

From Katy Perry’s knack for comedic dressing, to Taylor Swift’s spot-on eye for elegant gowns, this week we’ve got a lot of variety in our style chart.

Emma Stone

Where: Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards

The always well-dressed Emma Stone chose an Antonio Berardi dress for the orange carpet at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards. The subtle two-colour frock with white top and nude skirt is great with Emma’s blonde hair and pale skin, while the elegant draping of the skirt is a nice girly touch.

Katy Perry

Where: Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards

You can always count on Katy to do something fun for the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards. Wearing a slime coloured crop top and matching asymmetric skirt, as well as neon green Prada peep toes, the only thing that’s missing is green hair!

Kelly Osbourne

Where: Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards

The newly svelte Ms Osbourne sticks to her penchant for ‘50s style dresses with this pretty full-skirt design. The one-shoulder cut and ruching detail add much-needed texture to the simple style, while the lame finish skirt adds a bit of sparkle.

Kristen Stewart

Where: Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards

Kristen plays up her gothic heroine side in this lace dress from Stella McCartney. The royal blue colour and floral lace print give her a sophisticated look, while the short skirt ensures she’s emphasising her best assets – those legs!

Leann Rimes

Where: Academy of Country Music Awards

Leann also opted for a Stella McCartney dress – albeit a completely different one – for the Academy of Country Music Awards. The red paisley print with cut out aertex detail is both sporty and futuristic – an unusual choice for the country crooner.

Rihanna

Where: Battleship UK photocall

Rihanna certainly brushes up well doesn’t she? The Barbadian singer turned actress was out promoting new film Battleship in London last week, and taking advantage of the gorgeous weather chose to wear this sleeveless khaki dress with panelling and ruche detail on the waist and skirt.

Selena Gomez

Where: Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards

The child star decided to go with a ‘50s style look in this pleated knee-length skirt with Lolita-esque crop top bralet.

Taylor Swift

Where: Academy of Country Music Awards

The princess of country music wows in floor-length white. The gold detail on the bust and skirt break up the monotony of the white hue, while the cut-out detail at the waist gives it more shape. A goddess look!

Celebrities Do High Street

We heart Cher Lloyd’s super-sweet jumper – and its £29.99 price tag! Find it at Quiz.

That bag may be unmistakably designer, but Fearne Cotton’s outfit in its entirety wouldn’t break the bank. Her purple maxi dress is from her own collection for Very.co.uk.

We couldn’t take our eyes off the sugar-pink heels that Kelly Osbourne to a New York Fashion Week party. They’re by Brit designer Mark Fast, part of his collaboration with high street brand Aldo.

It’s not only the entire Lipsy collection that Tulisa packed for her Miami jaunt… She also found space for this Guess Maisie skirt, £85.

Coverdrive star Amanda Reifer might be flying high in the charts with hit Twilight, but she’s got her feet firmly on the ground; she wore these bargainous peep-toe heels by new label Simmi to the BRITs.

Pixie Geldof loved these ASOS check trousers so much, she bought them twice – we’ve also spotted her in the turquoise pair!

Katy Perry caused quite the stir when she was spotted holding hands with this ‘mystery man’ post-split from Russell Brand. But we were too busy drooling over her look – which is head-to-toe All-Saints – to care! (It turns out he is her stylist, purely platonic, anyway.)

We don’t even know where to start with Little Mix’s BRITs look, which was awash with high street gems! Click here to get the full scoop.

Way to show off a pair of fab shoes, Marina Diamandis! These bad boys are – you guessed it – Topshop’s Staccato heels.

Rooney Mara is officially a fashion legend. She wore an ASOS jumpsuit – with a Givenchy blazer, natch – to the pre-Oscars luncheon. Excuse us while we wilt.

“Because her success has been so beyond what anyone thought a stylist could achieve, THR decided to recuse her from this year’s list,” wrote Halperin of the stylist who has become a television star and boasts her own multimillion-dollar fashion empire.

Hollywood’s hottest strut their stuff at this year’s star-studded Oscar parties.

Jennifer Lopez turned heads on the Oscars red carpet in a plunging, silver Zuhair Murad gown, but the diva extraordinaire looked even better at the annual Vanity Fair afterparty in yet another revealing Murad masterpiece. Luckily — at the post-ceremony soiree — J.Lo didn’t suffer a second slip. Her first frock may have showcased a bit too much skin, but her encore ensemble was utter perfection.

Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes — who debuted a new, bang-enhanced ‘do — partied the night away with Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and her hubby, soccer star/underwear model, David.

Also photographed entering the Vanity Fair fete was former Disney darling, Miley Cyrus, who channeled Old Hollywood in a glamorous Roberto Cavalli gown, chandelier earrings, ruby-red lips, and a classic coif.

No, this isn’t a mugshot. Last year’s Oscar co-host James Franco just looked like a vagrant at the Mercedes-Benz viewing party at Soho House in West Hollywood, CA.

Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio and reality “star” Kourtney Kardashian showed off their growing baby bumps at Elton John’s yearly shindig.

Tennis aces Serena and Venus Williams (both in Christiane King) hung out with fellow sports superstar, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

“SNL’s” Jason Sudeikis was caught canoodling with his lady love, “Tron” hottie Olivia Wilde. That’s one lucky man!

Steve Martin and Martin Short made a Gwyneth Paltrow sandwich, not that she eats sandwiches … or eats anything solid for that matter.

Golden Globe winner Claire Danes (“Homeland”) looked like a delicious snowcone in her strawberry-hued Valentino dress.

Katy Perry — whose tired blue hairdo has got to go — sparkled in Blumarine, while Dita Von Teese shimmered in Jenny Packham.

Michael Douglas and his proud papa, Kirk, arrived in style at the VF festivities.

Kim opted for a gothic look in Alaia. Her sister, Kourtney, went Grecian in a Raoul gown, and both Kardashians nearly disappeared standing next to the super sexy Heidi Klum, who put them both to shame in her Versace mini and Louboutin pumps.

David Furnish and Elton John accessorized with their son, baby Zachary.

Miley clung to her boy toy, Liam Hemsworth, as they sashayed their way into Elton’s event.

What do you make of the strapless white Roberto Cavalli gown “Modern Family” minx Sofia Vergara wore to the Vanity Fair party? Hot or not?

Nina Dobrev (in J. Mendel) and her “Vampire Diaries” co-star/boyfriend Ian Somerhalder (in Armani) easily made for one of the evening’s most stylish couples!

Best Actor winner, Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), looked sleepy, happy, and quite possibly buzzed next to his new trophy.

Party girls Cameron Diaz (in Victoria Beckham) and Kate Hudson (in vintage Versace) looked like they were having more fun than any other celebs in attendance at the VF fete. Perhaps the open bar had something to do with that.

Comedian Chris Rock caught up with his pal, 85-year-old Oscar winner Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field”), who looked sharp in his tux.

We’re not feeling Katie’s bangs or Natalie’s dress, are you?

We’ll look past Gwen Stefani’s questionable frock (“I’m walking into spiderwebs… “), but we can’t forgive her for the catastrophic coif she sported at the Elton John party.

We’re not sure why or how, but former “High School Musical” hotties Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale somehow landed invites to Elton’s jamboree.

Is the bold color combo Rosario Dawson rocked working for you? We secretly love it.

Do you prefer the Giambattista Valli dress Emma Stone wore to the Oscars, or this one, which was designed by Chanel?

Gerard Bulter put his grubby paws on Jessica Chastain at the Vanity Fair party. She should know better than to mingle with the infamous ladies man.

Joan Collins looks great for 78, and Victoria Beckham looks grumpy for 37.

Brett Ratner was supposed to produce the 84th Academy Awards with Don Mischer, but was asked to step down after delivering disparaging remarks about gays and actress Olivia Munn. Why, then, would swimsuit model Kate Upton hang out with such a fool? Ick.

“Avatar” star Zoe Saldana channeled her inner “Dynasty” vixen in an ’80s-inspired Marios Schwab frock.

Busy Philipps was once again BFF Michelle Williams’ date for the evening. Love this dynamic duo!

“Transformers” star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley snuggled up to her man, action hero Jason Statham, at the bar.

Amy Adams looked terrified of Tim Tebow … and he looked either sunburned, embarrassed, or sauced.

Elizabeth Banks’ dress, designed by Chadwick Bell, was one of our absolute favorites. Thoughts?

Salma Hayek’s YSL dress was nothing to write home about. Her braid, however, was quite cute.

Elizabeth Olsen kept things relatively simple in an all-black ensemble from Christian Dior.

Also spotted in all-black was “Once Upon a Time” star Ginnifer Goodwin, who donned this fashion-forward getup.

Would you want to party with Miley and Kelly Osbourne?

Or, would you prefer to party with Zach Galifianakis, Rachael Harris, and Cheryl

“Modern Family’s” Julie Bowen got photobombed by Leslie Mann upon arriving at the VF party.

Bradley Cooper’s ‘stache … yay or nay?

Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller took advantage of the complimentary photo booth.

Ladies Night, featuring: Amy Adams, Jennifer Westfeldt, Claire Danes, and Paula Patton!

Natalie Portman and baby daddy Benjamin Millepied must have found a sitter for little Aleph, who was born back in June.

We didn’t think it was possible, but Shailene Woodley (“The Descendants”) looked even worse at the Vanity Fair party than she did on the Oscars red carpet.

From the neck up, Tina Fey looked better than ever thanks to a chic updo, but her Carolina Herrera gown was a bit baggy.

Do you think Tom instructs Katie to tilt her head in every picture in order for him to seem less petite?

Kate Beckinsale has never failed us … until last night in this seaweed-covered eyesore.

Gwyneth actually looked good next to Jane Fonda, whose dress was clearly inspired by the Ice Capades.

“Parks and Recreation” star Rashida Jones looked yummy in yellow. Mustard is one of this season’s hottest trends.

Cam changed into a Popsicle-hued Victoria Beckham-designed gown for the party circuit. Discuss!

Brooklyn Decker partied at Elton John’s soiree sans hubby, tennis star Andy Roddick, who was prepping for a tournament.

LOVE Patricia Clarkson. HATE her dress and shoe combo. So much.

Diane Kruger (“Inglourious Basterds”) vamped it up in a slinky red gown and high pony.

Chace Crawford could really use a new haircut. His suit, however, looked mighty fine.

Mary Steenburgen does not age! Her hubby, Ted Danson, does.

“227″ alum Regina King delivered some fierceness as she made her way into the star-studded Vanity Fair fete.

Can we all just agree that Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are kinda the coolest couple in Hollywood? Because they are.

“Glee’s” Dianna Agron opted for a beachy, sun-kissed look for the Elton party, and it suited her well.

Agron’s co-stars, Ashley Fink and Chris Colfer, posed for this hilarious “candid” when photographers decided to invade their conversation.

Rachael Harris — who also looked lovely on the purple carpet at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards — delivered a second consecutive win, this time in vintage Lanvin.

Fran Drescher accessorized with her furry little friend, Pomeranian Ester.

Rachel Zoe looked alarmingly thin in a white maxi dress and faux fur wrap.

Abbie Cornish oozed elegance in a simple yet chic sheath and diamond accents.

Kate Bosworth usually looks like a hot mess on the red carpet, but we actually approve of this Prabal Gurung dress. Do you?

Rose McGowan flaunted her fab frame in a Paule Ka gown and unseen Sergio Rossi heels at Elton’s bash.

Yep, I’m showcasing the Williams sisters again. Why? Because I love them, and they had fun dressing in bold gowns, unlike so many of Hollywood’s uptight elitists.

Tiiiiiiiiiiiin roof, rusted.

What was Mena Suvari thinking?! It looks like she slathered herself in glue and rolled around in a pile of shredded Kleenex.

Minnie Driver reigned supreme in a champagne-colored gown and diamond baubles. Call us crazy, but we think she was one of the best-dressed beauties of the entire evening.

Emily Watson was all smiles upon arriving at the annual VF party in a black frock, curly ‘do, and layered necklaces.

Paz Vega outdressed Petra Nemcova at the Elton party. In fact, Vega outdressed nearly everyone who stepped foot in that fete.

Felicity Jones — who was robbed of an Oscar nom for her work in “Like Crazy” — dressed to impress in a fashionable Johanna Johnson dress and minimal makeup.

Hot-ness or Hot mess? Fashion at the Grammys

The sartorial good, bad and downright ugly.

For some, accesories meant Neil Lane jewellery, while for others, it meant machine guns and the pope.

HOT-NESS! Fergie in Jean Paul Gaultier.Critics are bound to be divided over The Duchess’ orange see-through number, but we’re firm fans. It’s the Grammys after all and unlike the Oscars, this is the time celebs can go nuts. Those granny panties are actually a nice touch, keeping the look classy not crassy.

HOT-NESS! Bruno Mars in Thom Browne.

We love the retro vibe, but just can’t help laughing at what a cute little munchkin he looks like. Aww…bless.

HOT-NESS! Amber Rose in Versace.Kanye West’s ex looks stunning and absolutely elegant in the bright, citrusy hue, nicely off-set with a tangerine lip and red nails.

HOT-NESS! Carrie Underwood in Gomez Garcia.

There’s a saying: I hate to see you go, but love to watch you leave. And that’s what we were thinking of the ex-Idol star. The front was downright boring, but that bum-skimming back just makes up for it all.

HOT MESS! Nicky Minaj in Versace.

So this is what happened to Little Red Riding Hood after she joined the satanic cult.

HOT MESS! Anna Vyalitsyna in Anthony Vaccarello.

Someone should tell Adam Levine’s lady that she left half her dress in the car. The Victoria Secret angel reminds us of those stage shows where performer wears half a man’s outfit on one side of his body, and a woman’s outfit on the other side.

HOT-NESS! Kelly Rowland in Alberta Ferretti.

Doesn’t the former Destiny’s Child singer remind you of an early days Whitney? Definitely one of the most glamourous frocks of the night.

HOT MESS! Rihanna in custom Armani.

OK. Everyone’s raving about this one but we just don’t get it! It would have been alright if she was just a presenter, but she was one of the biggest stars of the evening and all she could come up with was a black dress? Come on now.

HOT MESS! Corrine Bailey Rae in Christian Siriano.

What is with the hair matching the ruffles on the dress? We’d expect this from someone like Imogen Heap, but on one of Grammy’s R&B winners, it’s just not working out.

HOT MESS! Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad.

Yes, we said mess. The girl’s 22 years old and singing about someone being mean to her. Yet, she steps out in a dress that she really shouldn’t be steppoing into for at least another decade. Lighten up, girl!

HOT MESS! Robyn in possibly something her grandma made.

First, the bowl hair cut. Then, the mullet dress in the awful shiny fabric. And on top of that, the strangest construction platform boots ever known to men. She really should have stayed at home. And girlfriend…say it with me now – Spanx.

HOT MESS! Kelly Osbourne in Tony Ward.

The top half of this Grecian dress is lovely, but from the waist down, Kelly looks like she’s been eaten by swatches of fabric. She definitely needs to do something about length, too.

HOT MESS! Diana Ross in something she found in her closet.

Or so we think. The legendary singer was at the show to pick up her Lifetime Achievement award, but we’re guessing she got no points for her sense of style here.

HOT MESS! Esperanza Spalding in bed sheets.

Doesn’t it look like last year’s Best New Artist winner (who beat out The Biebs for the title) decided to do a little arts and crafts at home with her bed sheets and some fabric dye?

HOT BORING! Adele in Versace.

We’ve come to expect that the British Rose will always be in black, but there are ways to jazz things up. The high neckline and floor length hem are just so ho-hum. Even the polka dotted number she changed into during the ceremony was cuter.

HOT-NESS! Katy Perry in Elie Saab.

Exciting it is not, but smart it definitely is. This fishtailed frock is conservative and says “My husband just dumped me and I’m devastated. So I’m not ready to be putting it all out there just yet, but I’m naturally stunning and I can’t help if that oozes out of me even in this conservative number.” Props to you Katy, but a word to the wise: a bra would have been better.

HOT MESS! Bonnie McKee in Falgoni & Peacock.

The middle is some kind of space suit and the shoulders appear to be some kind fo cheese spewing outlet.

HOT-NESS! LL Cool J in Giorgio Armani.

Loving the velvet and the newspaper boy hat is a cheeky touch.

HOT MESS! Cyndi Lauper in her nightie.

Fergie showed us how you can still look classy with your underwear showing. Cyndi shows us the exact opposite. This girl’s definitely had too much fun.

HOT-NESS! Jessie J in Julien Macdonald.

It’s like the pop star grew up over night. Gone were the whacky outfits, and in it’s place, this gorgeous grown up fishtailed dress. Critics have panned the disco ball-esque material, but again we say, hey! It’s the Grammys. If you can’t sparkle and shine now, when can you?

HOT-NESS! Alicia Keys in Alexandre Vauthier and Swizz Beatz in Tom Ford.Love, love, love the purple velvet on Swizz Beatz and Alicia Key’s choice of slimming black was a good one.

Just a note though: do Bruno Mars and Alicia Keys have the same hair stylist?

HOT-NESS! Paris Hilton in Basil Soda.

One of the rare occassions the heiress isn’t flashing something to get attention.

HOT MESS! Snooki in Bebe.

No grown woman should purposely try to make themselves look like a 12-year-old girl.

HOT MESS! Sasha Gradiva in an unknown designer.

When you accessorise with a Terminator style machine gun, yet still leave the ceremony with everyone asking “who’s that again?” it’s definitely not a good day at the office.

HOT-NESS! Tia Carrere.

She looks lovely with her hair pulled back and the draping toga dress, but that I’m-trying-to-hide-my-flabby-chicken-wing-arms pose is just so obviously awkward.

HOT-NESS! Giuliana Rancic.

Its the perfect laidback, yet glammed up look for the red carpet presenter.

HOT-NESS! Rebecca Black in Ted Baker.

Now this is how a young twentysomething should look. Taylor Swift should really get some pointers.
