Something very peculiar has been stirring in fashion land this season: gone are the printed shoes, lace-up stilettos and pretty ballerina flats normally favoured by designers in the warmer seasons and in their place are some rather questionable replacements. Yup, it would seem designers from Miu Miu to Philip Lim have gone to the dark side, bringing to the runways s/s 2012’s hottest trend: ugly shoes we love to hate. From stripper heel-inspired Perspex numbers to flatforms and pointed velvet mules, ugly-chic is having a moment. And right at the front of the been-hit-by-the-ugly-stick queue? The queen of fabulously unfortunate footwear, the brothel creeper.
Brothel creepers – the flatform’s cooler, older sister – have been spotted on the most fashionable of feet, from Jessie J to devout creeper, Rihanna, and what they lack in grace and elegance they sure make up for in edgy coolness. Love them or hate them, creepers are set to stay firmly on our trotters through summer and well into next season.
The retro throwback flats first shot to sartorial infamy in their fifties heyday as the footwear of choice for oversized blazer and turned up jean-clad Teddy boys, before they witnessed a revival as the shoe du jour of seventies punks.
Stacked brogues on the Prada 2011 RTW catwalks signaled a stirring in the fash world and creepers were once again the shoe of choice. If that wasn’t enough of a sartorial seal of approval, King Karl (Largerfeld, obviously!) featured the style heavily in his Chanel cruise collection. And if it’s good enough for Karl…
Creepers are surprisingly easy to wear and provide just the right dollop of edginess to an outfit. Team with a cutesy mini, a la Chanel, or up the ante with ripped tights and slashed daisy dukes. Even an ethereal floaty midi, crop top and skirt or oversized man’s shirt work with these babies.
Signal your inner angsty, Shoreditch teen with a pair of Underground’s double or triple stacked numbers – they’re the original and the best. As for design, anything goes, from plain or tartan to leopard print and embellished numbers. Or why not do a Ri-Ri and scribble some obscenities on the heel? Hmm, maybe not.
However you wear yours for summer, accessories with a smudge of black kohl and a generous helping of attitude!

Whether you have a hippie side reminiscent of Anna Sui and Cavalli or more of a bohemian-bourgeois vibe à la Marc Jacobs and D&G, the key is to go retro. The ’70s are back and embodied by a new breed of gypset: a mix of “gypsy” and “jet set,” darling! Inject a touch of craft into your look with

The minimalist trend comes back year after year, and this time it takes a page from the ’90s and Calvin Klein. Think bare-bones design, shapeless cuts and unadorned styling. Take a peek at Céline and Stella McCartney for inspiration.
For her L.A.M.B. collection, Gwen Stefani went nuts (in a good way) for tribal prints in both her modern, structured pieces and her asymmetrical and tiered dresses. Exotic bright colours and loud prints also graced djellabas at Etro and the body-con styles of Versace. There’s nothing like a little wildness to heat things up!
The sporty look is holding strong again on runways this season, though it isn’t always successful in its transition to retail stores. The trend has either translated into techno-materials, in homage to the wetsuit at Marni, or to more straight-up gear that recalls the tennis garb at Tommy.

Everyone went with white this season (Rag & Bone, Hermès, Chloé), either in part or as a total look. When you think that even the prince of darkness (all-things-black Alexander Wang) focused on white and pastels this season, it’s clear this is a monster trend!
While white was all the rage on the runways in September, its counterpart (colour) made quite a coup too. Miu Miu, Sonia Rykiel and Burberry (among others) all worked with fabrics in completely Kung Pow hues. Even those among us who are hooked on neutrals have to admit it’s a trend that’s plain eye candy!
Vuitton set its sails for Asia this spring, which is a trend we haven’t seen in a while. Think nouveau kimonos, mandarin-collared shirts and fans that serve as accessories. Paul Smith played the part by using
