2012 Watch List: Celebs, Trends, and Designers You’ll Want to Know This Year

A fresh crop of design talent, shopping musts, and rising stars is on the horizon for 2012 — and we’re breaking it all down right here. We’re less than a month into the new year and there’s already a lot to take in, like Rooney Mara’s rise to Hollywood stardom (and bona fide fashion plate) and Jason Wu‘s collection for Target on the way. That’s only the beginning — this year is ripe with fresh fashion popping up on our DVR, new designer collections we’re coveting, and the highly anticipated release of The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence solidifying her own leading-lady status. Step inside to get all the details on the celebs we’re watching, trends we’re wearing, and fashion we’re loving in 2012.

Hollywood It Girl: Jennifer Lawrence

She rocketed to fame with her Oscar-nominated performance in Winter’s Bone, stunned on the red carpet in curve-flaunting Calvin Klein, and beat out young-Hollywood favorites for the lead role in the Hunger Games movies — oh, and she’s only 22.

Bag to Have: The Handheld Clutch

No Spring ’12 runway look was complete without a pretty clutch in tow. Handheld styles ran the gamut from ladylike to neon and tribal-inspired, so while exactly which version you tote is up to you, one thing’s for certain — ditch your carryall for something a little more streamlined.

Must Watch: Fashion Star

We’ll always have a soft spot for Project Runway, but this year we’re tuning in to see Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson mentor a cast of rising talent turning out designs we can actually purchase the very next day. Fashion Star premieres March 13 — you’ll want to set your DVR for this one.

Trend to Try: Botanicals

2011 may have been the year of leopard print, but if the florals forecast at the Spring ’12 shows is any indication, 2012 is going to be all about bold, full-bodied botanicals on everything from silky dresses to suit separates.

Must-Have Collab: Marni For H&M

2011 was buzzing with the Versace for H&M collab, but this year the mass retailer may just outdo itself by bringing Marni‘s jacquard knits and bold graphic prints in stores. Keep your eyes out for this must-have collection.

Designer to Watch: Mary Katrantzou

The Greek-born designer has an optimistic, whimsical sense that translates into beautifully crafted kaleidoscope prints on the runway. Now, with a celebrity fan base that includes Alexa Chung, Keira Knightley, and Hailee Steinfeld and a capsule collection for Topshop out this Spring, 2012 may just be her biggest year yet.

Must-Have Add-On: The Earring

Last year may have been all about the arm party or the statement necklace, but this season we’re giving our ears a little love via pretty, bold, and embellished earrings. Whether you opt for a glitzy studded pair, dangling drop earrings, or megawatt hoops, each style had a place on the Spring ’12 runways — and now eking out a spot in your own jewelry box.

Must-Have Collab: Jason Wu For Target

Have you seen this collection? With a selection of the designer’s pretty frocks and sophisticated sportswear for under $60, we’re predicting a Missoni-for-Target-like craze to ensue. Mark your calendars — the collection drops Feb. 5.

Rising Star: Rooney Mara

From seriously killer red-carpet style (she may have single-handedly launched the cutout trend) to her breakout role in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, we suspect 2011 was just the beginning for Rooney.

‘Teen Choice 2012′ Red Carpet

Taylor Swift stunned the crowed upon arrival at the 2012 Teen choice Awards in a short, white Maria Lucia Hoan dress with a cutout back that showed off her mile-long gams. The 22-year-old songstress wore her hair swept up in a chic updo and accessorized the romantic frock with Lorraine Schwartz jewels, a sparkly Edie Parker clutch, and nude peep-toe heels. There’s no denying that the country cutie looked sweet and sexy in the backless dress, but we can’t help but think it’s a drawback that she’s always wearing white to awards shows. Along with presenting, Taylor is nominated for five awards this year : Choice Voice for “The Lorax,” Choice Female Artist, Choice Single by a Female Artist for “Eyes Open,” Choice Female Country Artist, and Choice Country Song for “Sparks Fly.”

Rebecca Black, who became a huge Internet star after her “Friday” music video became a viral hit, arrived on the Teen Choice Awards pink carpet in an orange and white geometric-print blouse and a short, black leather skirt with zippered pockets. The outfit looked youthful on the 15-year-old YouTube sensation, but her top completely clashed with her partially-pink hairstyle. Black is just one of many starlets to try the dip-dyed pink hair trend; including Demi Lovato (the host of this year’s show), Lauren Conrad, and Nicole Richie.

Suri Cruise is world’s most stylish child

Suri Cruise has been named the world’s Most Stylish Child, beating thelikes of Ivy Blue Carter, Harlow Madden and Harper Beckham.

The six-year-old girl – daughter of Tom Cruise and his estranged wife Katie Holmes – topped a poll by family-gifting site twistedtwee.co.uk, as organisers were impressed with her stunning wardrobe, which includes lots of dresses and mini high-heels.

Suri – whose wardrobe is rumoured to be worth $2 million – beat Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z’s baby daughter, Blue Ivy, into second place while Will and Jada Smith’s girl, Willow, came third.

Harlow Madden – daughter of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – was fourth, and David and Victoria Beckham’s first girl, Harper Seven, was fifth.

Twisted Twee owner Suzi Warren said: ”Aliens and pocket-sized papas haven’t hindered Suri in becoming the world’s most stylish sprog. She was head and tiny shoulders above all over the other celeb children in our poll.

”Although, we were alarmed by how low down Posh’s wee sprog came in our poll. She’s incapable of smiling at the best of times, so we dread to see the look on Victoria’s face when she hears about our nationwide findings.”

Other celebrity offspring to make the list included Max Anthony, Jayden Smith and Coco Arquette.

TOP TEN MOST STYLISH CELEBRITY CHILDREN:

  1. SURI CRUISE
  2. BLUE IVY CARTER

Colours and prints to mix and match for spring/summer 2012

Every season, new combinations of fabrics and colours send our hearts fluttering! From colour blocking and fabric blocking to mixed prints, it can be tough to navigate the fashion seas. Which prints and colours do you marry to create an on-trend spring/summer look? Moreover, how do you avoid the dreaded fashion faux pas? We’ve put together all the season’s most coveted matches as seen on your favourite celebs and personalities!

Pastel colours and neutral tones, à la Nicole Richie

Givenchy’s spring/summer 2012 show gave us a serious craving for pastels and neutrals. Creative director Riccardo Tisci sent masculine silhouettes down the runway, softened by sweet macaron hues.

Nicole Richie pulls off this look with flying colours, pairing an oh-so-Givenchy powder pink blazer with a pair of taupe pumps. The final touch? Pastel pants with metallic detailing.

Nature prints and graphic patterns, as seen on Diane Kruger

What’s the one thing we swooned over at Dries Van Noten’s spring/summer 2012 show?

All kinds of floral prints mixed and matched together! But how do you snag this look without breaking the bank?

Diane Kruger has the answer! Her floral-print dress is anything but old-fashioned, especially when layered with a striped pencil skirt. Get this trendy and modern look by matching a Breton-striped top with a floral skirt, or a floral print blouse with striped pants.

Head-to-toe prints, just like Rihanna

There’s nothing hotter or more 2012 than pairing a printed top with printed pants. This look may not require much thought, but it demands a lot of attitude.

If you’re tempted to try the pyjama look but afraid of turning into a fashion don’t, follow in Rihanna’s stylish footsteps and opt for an all-over neutral look. Feeling brave? Skip the neutrals and go all out in baroque tropical prints!

Black and white, à la Taylor Tomasi Hill

On the flipside, restraint and sobriety are just as current this season. Black and white made an edgy-yet-classic cameo on the spring/summer 2012 catwalks at shows like Roberto Cavalli and Carven.

To give your outfit a dose of interest, don’t hesitate to add a graphic touch, just like Taylor Tomasi Hill (former style and accessories director at Marie Claire US and a favourite among street style photogs). Playing with multiple textures is more than welcome where this look is concerned!

Blue and green

Underwater inspiration is in the spotlight this season, and the simplest way to pull off this look is by bringing shades of blue and green into your wardrobe. Easy, right?

Option 1: Make like this fashionista at Paris Fashion Week and wear solid colours together for some on-trend colour blocking. This look was a huge hit at Haider Ackermann’s spring/summer 2012 show. Option 2: Play the prints card like Jason Wu and mix/match at your discretion!

Neons and neutrals

The neon trend sent us head over heels this season, but we have some practical concerns: How do you work this palette without looking like a giant highlighter?

We spotted somebody at Milan Fashion Week with the solution: striking the right balance. Offset intense, eye-catching pieces with neutral-toned items. A fluorescent belt with grey pants, black shoes with dayglo details or a neon top with beige pants will add just the right dose of punch without delivering a sensory overload.

Hollywood’s 25 most powerful stylists

The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 most powerful stylists and some of their main clients:

(Relaxnews) – After stars including Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams topped best dressed lists during awards ceremony season, the women behind their looks rate highly in an annual ranking by US publication The Hollywood Reporter (THR) of the industry’s 25 most powerful stylists –which this year excludes fashion mogul Rachel Zoe.
After evaluating factors such as clients, visibility during awards season and breadth of influence, THR cites Kate Young, whose patrons include Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, as this year’s most powerful stylist.

The latter wore red Louis Vuitton to the Academy Awards last month and came second in a Twitter best dressed list, according to data based on tweets sent regarding the awards ceremony with the hashtag #BESTDRESSED. Jessica Chastain topped the poll with her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress, although her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who also dresses Viola Davis, Freida Pinto and Jennifer Lawrence, came in fourth place in THR’s list.
Meanwhile, Emma Stone, who impressed at the Oscars in a bow-detail Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown, is styled by Petra Flannery — who takes third place in THR’s compilation. Last year Rachel Zoe, who gained attention in the early 2000s due to her work with the likes of Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie and Keira Knightley, topped THR’s most powerful stylist list. This year Zoe doesn’t feature on the rundown, although this exclusion is explained in an article by THR’s Shirley Halperin.
“Because her success has been so beyond what anyone thought a stylist could achieve, THR decided to recuse her from this year’s list,” wrote Halperin of the stylist who has become a television star and boasts her own multimillion-dollar fashion empire.
The ladies on this year’s list are breaking into the design world too though — Young last year teamed up with designer Lynne Hiriak for the knitwear line Cardigan by Kate Young and Leslie Fremar created a capsule line of basics for Fruit of the Loom.

2 Hot 2 Handle

This week’s best-dressed stars include Jennifer Hudson, Michelle Williams, and Miley Cyrus.

Jennifer Hudson looked more glamorous than ever upon taking the stage during the opening night of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas. The multi-talented diva — who has settled into a healthy weight that works for her — showcased her signature curves in a crystal-encrusted Ralph & Russo Couture gown. Orange-and-gold earrings, pink lipstick, and a classy coif completed the Oscar winner’s elegant ensemble.

Also looking lovely in black was 23-year-old Nina Dobrev, who turned heads as she strutted into the “Vampire Diaries” PaleyFest panel in an adorable Rachel Zoe-designed cocktail frock. Even cuter? Her $1,100, leopard-print Jimmy Choo sandals!

Meanwhile, Channing Tatum hit the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of his highly anticipated new comedy, “21 Jump Street.” Love him or hate him, you have to admit that the big screen stud looked incredibly debonair in his gray checkered suit, striped shirt, and black tie.

Michelle Williams’ fashions failed to impress during the U.S. promotional tour for “My Week With Marilyn,” but she stepped it up this week while in Japan for the film’s debut. Yes, her draped Alexander McQueen dress is simple, but that’s why we love it. Simple. Chic. Stunning. Thoughts?

Her new show, “Fashion Star,” may have bombed, but mentor Nicole Richie never fails us in the personal style department. While championing the reality-competition on “Extra,” the budding entrepreneur rocked a trendy, cheddar-colored Thakoon dress. Accessories included an Etro belt and self-designed House of Harlow heels.

Mena Suvari makes her second consecutive appearance in 2 Hot 2 Handle thanks to the flirty Alice + Olivia frock she wore for the Australian debut of “American Pie: Reunion.” H. Stern earrings, bold red lips, and matching Brian Atwood pumps added a splash of sparkle and a much-needed pop of color.

While we aren’t convinced that her messy mane was a smart move, we are sure of the sophisticated Chanel dress Audrey Tautou sported to a NYC screening of “Delicacy.” The beloved “Amelie” star — who also happens to be the face of the French fashion house — accessorized with basic black heels and a strand of Chanel pearls around her wrist.

Some people hate the dark tight trend, but we happen to love it … even when paired with a light-colored dress. Jessica Alba solidified our stance when she arrived at the 3rd Annual Diane Von Furstenberg Awards on Saturday night in a sequined, blush DVF frock, opaque tights, and black suede Christian Louboutins. What do you think? Hot or not?

The Prabal Gurung dress Jennifer Lawrence wore to the premiere of “The Hunger Games” was very polarizing. Some found it chintzy-looking, while others found it fabulous. We’re still on the fence, so help us decide!

We not-so-secretly preferred the futuristic Atelier Versace mini Elizabeth Banks wore to the star-studded event. The bright orange hue, the single shoulder, the Jimmy Choo peep-toes … all perfection!

But our favorite look of the evening belonged to Miley Cyrus, who stole the spotlight from the film’s stars in a beaded, two-piece Emilio Pucci masterpiece. You’ll probably beg to differ, but we’re sticking with former Disney darling’s daring look.

Celebs Wearing Hats

Whether trying to go incognito, repping their fave team or hiding from the sun, celebs love wearing hats. In honor of hat appreciation month, click through to see how stars are rocking all sorts of hats.

Cameron looks like she’s just come from the beach with her sunkissed tresses hidden behind that white fedora instead of trekking through the airport.

Vanessa Hudgens looks glam in her all-black ensemble and little felt hat that lets her short hair flow freely.

The couple that wears hats together stays together — at least when it comes to Jen and Justin, who tend to dress the same when out on the town.

You wouldn’t expect someone as divalicious as Beyonce to wear a boring, old baseball hat to a tennis match, would you? As it turns out, she prefers glam curly hair and a little black hat to make her sporty look edgier.

Reese goes for both glam and casual with this small fedora and a black sundress for a lunch date.

Oh, JT. A little newspaper boy’s cap can’t hide that signature swagger of yours.

Like every good fashionista knows, Kim rocks an elegant all-black outfit with a little fedora and a long side-braid.

Ashley Tisdale knows how to stay cool during L.A.’s warm fall — cool jersey dresses and floppy hats that keep her face covered.

Most celebs wear hats to help them go incognito, but not Khloe Kardashian! She rocks a bright pink floppy hat and a neon yellow purse while running errands in New York.

He may be playing a character, but is there anything hotter than Ryan Gosling looking dapper in a suit with suspenders and a hat? I think not.

Thank goodness Katie has Suri to help pick out chic, trendy outfits for a day of running errands.

Speaking of Suri … Could she look any more on trend for fall with her black felt cap and fur jacket?

When you have a little tot on the way, your priorities change. Take Hil for instance, who makes sure to keep her silky skin protected from the sun’s harmful rays.

Unlike her preppy sister, Ashlee sports hipster gear like it’s her job. And now with her very cropped ‘do, she has really embraced hats in all shapes and sizes.

Lady Gaga hardly ever wears traditional hats. But odd, larger-than-life headpieces, she’s all about — like a massive, white feather puff.

You wouldn’t expect a judge from “The X Factor” to not be a diva. And that expectation seems spot-on for Nicole Scherzinger, who rocks the largest, floppiest hat for an afternoon of errands.

Jennifer Love Hewitt accessorizes her causal jeans-and-a-T-shirt look with a cute fedora.

Demi Lovato has been rocking an edgier look post-rehab — on that has her fully embracing long, loose dresses and black felt hats.

Nicole Richie loves to rock her bohemian style, even when she’s coming to and from the gym. Hey, when fashion is your life, you still gotta look good when you’re a little sweaty.

Life’s a beach for Gabrielle Union, who keeps her face safe from the sun with a straw hat.

Rachel Zoe‘s fashion knowledge knows no end — she even looks gorgeous in a big floppy hat.

As long as you rock your Kangol hat in black, it’s red-carpet appropriate!

With his little cap and flowing locks, Matthew McConaughey’s son, Levi, never fails to live up to his reputation as one of the most stylish tots in Hollywood.

Oh, Ashton. A little straw fedora and some retro sunglasses can’t make up for those long tresses and unruly beard.

Paris, you stick out like a sore thumb wearing that floppy number and striking your signature pose.

Since David Beckham keeps his hair closely shaven, he often sports beanies to protect his head and ears from getting chilly.

Wearing his hat backward, Josh Duhamel goes for a look that says he’s cool but not trying too hard.

There’s nothing like seeing Prince William and Duchess Catherine rocking cowboy hats while touring the United States.

If you thought the trucker hat had come and gone, then think again. Gerard Butler rocks a black-and-white one as a way of rooting for the Chicago White Sox.

David Arquette has always had a quirky fashion sense. But ever since joining “Dancing With the Stars,” he has really stepped it up a notch.

As the biggest proponent of New York, it’s not surprising that Jay-Z wears FDNY gear on the anniversary of 9/11. He’s one prideful dude.

John Mayer continues shedding his pretty boy image every day — especially with the new Indiana Jones-inspired style he’s been rocking of late.

Just because Marc Anthony and Will Smith are Hollywood bigwigs doesn’t mean they can’t rock their baseball caps while catching a football game together.

The trend to try now… HATS

Hats are still popping up the runways for Fall 12 so rest assured there is still plenty of time to enjoy them later this year. However this is the perfect time now – trans-seasoning – to try this trend. It’s the perfect time coming out of winter into spring where is still cool but you need some light shading from the early spring sunlight. And perfect coming out of summer into autumn as the days start to cool but sunny enough for hats.

I’ve taken to this myself as it just goes that extra mile for an outfit and really does help when the sun is out but its a little cool. It works with almost anything – jeans and tee, or with a blouse. And for almost any occassion – the weekend brunch, stroll with your dog, or because you really just need to cover up when going without any make up running errands. Above are my interpretations on the fedora with items found in shops this month (feb 2012).

Felt fedoras hats to be precise. Celebs love it for down time cool and especially as a cover up in (airport) transit! See who loves a good hat – from starlets, actresses, top models and veteren hat wearers Nicole Richie and Kate Moss - need I say anymore!

Paris Fall/Winter 2011-2012

Paris Fall/Winter 2011-2012

PARIS – FashionTV takes you live to the streets of Paris for Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011/2012 and the sophisticated elegance of shows like Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Viktor & Rolf, Lanvin, Balmain, Yves St. Laurent, and more. VIPs like Nicole Richie, Daisy Lowe, and Kanye West came to the big shows like Jean-Paul Gaultier.

At the Vivienne Westwood show, models’ faces are covered in war paint and the strong women look like warriors in elaborate clothing. Things get even more fiery when we had to the Viktor & Rolf show where models faces are painted blood red and the clothes, in both black and ecru colors, looked like armor on their bodies. “We wanted to create a glamorous fashion crusade,” said Dutch designer Viktor Horsting. Things get playful at Sonia Rykiel, where models drapse down the runway in pinkish-red lips, pink furs, plaid, and prints next to what looks like a wired backyard fence. Rochas is sophisticated and quietly bold as usual. Kenzo, with Arizona Muse headlining, is a steam of a camouflage colors and kaleidoscope prints. Stella McCartney has beautiful form-fitting dresses with billowy sleeves and unique, playful textures. Gareth Pugh is edgy and dark with black leather, bold shoulders, and tough makeup. Balmain brings out big models like Carmen Kass and Freja Beha Erichsen, with bold and futuristic designs. Nina Ricci is pretty in dark, Fall colors. The collection included historical references in unique color combinations. Chloe has a conservative vibe but with color blocking. Yves St. Laurent was sophisticated, with a perverse bourgeois, one audience member describes. It has a slight sex appeal. Valentino, headlined by model Ruby Aldridge, was toned down but beautiful as always with lush fabrics. Jean-Paul Gaultier’s show included special guest, French actress Valerie Lemercier and made a statement when models donned gray wigs like grandmas but wore the designer’s stellar outfits. Gaultier described it as a little girl who wanted to be like their mother, with a 60s and 70s feel. Lanvin’s collection had sort of an outdoorsy Amish meets cowboy feel at first, but quickly picked up with Lanvin’s gorgeous minidresses and skirt suits. Thierry Mugler took our breath away when Lady Gaga smoked a cigarette on stage as other models followed in dark looks.

Appearances: Paloma Faith, Daisy Lowe, La Roux, Hildie Gifstad, Vivienne Westwood, Karlie Kloss, Viktor Horsting, Rolf Snoeren, Sarah Blomqvist, Sonia Rykiel, Ruby Aldridge, Karl Lagerfeld, Monika “Jac” Jagaciak, Kasia Wrobel, Zuzanna Bijoch, Alana Zimmer, Designer for Rochas, Arizona Muse, Melissa Tammerijn, Antonio Marras, Elettra Wiedemann, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Jourdan Dunn, Natasha Poly, Karmen Pedaru, Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh designer), Freja Beha Erichsen, Magdalena Frackowiak, Carmen Kass, Anabela Belikova, Sasha Pivovarova, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana, Peter Copping, Julia Saner, Ginta Lapina, Daphne Groeneveld, Chloe designer, Ron Wood, Hailey Clauson, Stefano Pilati, Valentino designers, Nicole Richie, Karolina Kurkova, Alber Elbaz, Ken Downing, Lady Gaga, Nicola Formichetti, Anna Dello Russo, Coco Rochas

Striped Bags & Striped Cropped Pants

Celebs Seen on the Scene Going On Stripe!

Kendra Wilkinson (H&M), January Jones (Prada), and Nicole Richie (Balenciaga)

Striped bags are another versatile accessory that goes practically anywhere with anything. Kendra’s nautical navy and white striped tote from H&M is not only on trend for the summer but excellent for storing books, magazines, sun tan lotion and sunglasses for some reading at the beach. January Jones smaller black and green striped bag makes it an easy grab-and-go purse for running errands or she can turn that Prada into chic for a luncheon with the girlfriends. I love for my bags to be so big that I can fit my entire life in them just like Nicole’s carry-all. Nothing says fit and fab like a trendy, striped, oversized bag to put all your gym clothes in.

Black and white vertical stripes on pants allows the eyes to move up and down, giving the illusion of slimmer leaner legs. And these pants being cropped adds a plus to this trend because it gives you the chance to show off your fabulous heels. When completing the outfit, stay away from prints. Keep it basic on top with blouses and shirts within the neutral color family like grays and creams, but don’t be afraid to be well-heeled with a pop of color. Red pumps will make a haute statement when paired with black and white striped crops.

As stated before, striped bags can go with practically everything. Take note that I said, “practically”. When carrying your striped shoulder bag refrain from wearing a striped shirt. When shopping for your stripped bottoms, keep in mind of the boldness and thickness of the black and white stripes, unless your personal style resembles Beetlejuice!

Everyone’s Wearing… 70s

Elle Macpherson

If you want people to pay attention, throwing on a yellow jumpsuit and styling it to the 70s hilt is a good way to go about it. Elle Macpherson helped her new reality TV show, Fashion Star, to hit international headlines when she was papped during filming in this flared mustard silk all-in-one and gold Lara Bohinc necklace.

Brooklyn Decker

For the German premiere of her film Just Go With It, Brooklyn Decker managed to achieve the seemingly unachievable – stealing in limelight from co-star Jennifer Aniston. Her secret? A show-stopping, split-leg purple jumpsuit by Max Mara worn, in true 70s style, without a bra.

Angela Lindvall

At the super-starry Christie’s Green Auction in NYC, model Angela Lindvall channelled 70s glamour in this black halterneck gown with silver sequin streaks.

Olivia Palermo

Never one to let a trend pass by untried, The Hills star Olivia Palermo wore this button-down peach Mango maxi dress with a tan belt to a fashion show thrown by the high street label in March.

Katie Holmes

A classic camel coat teamed with flared jeans, suede boots and a satin shirt is the perfect, subtle take on 70s casual. If we know Katie Holmes – and we think we do, fashion-wise – we’ll bet she’s hiding an on-trend high waistline under there, too.

Dakota Fanning

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back in time if you saw Dakota Fanning strolling around LA, like the ultimate 70s ingénue, in her straw trilby, crochet cardigan, denim flares and wooden platforms.

Florence Welch

Top-to-toe in new season Chanel, Florence Welch clearly has her finger on the 70s fashion pulse.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie’s penchant for boho makes her a natural 70s fit. This floral cape look, which the TV-star-turned-designer wore to the Jean Paul Gaultier show at Paris Fashion Week in March, is one of our absolute favourite of hers, ever.

Kylie Minogue

Nothing says 70s more than a tiered maxi and tottering platform heels. Kylie Minogue is our go-to girl for sweet summer day looks.

Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr’s plunge-front Balenciaga maxi dress hit the 70s nail square on the head – as do her open-toe sandals, suede clutch bag and natural make-up.

Alexa Chung

You bet that fashion rule-breaker Alexa Chung can pull off a 70s style. There are no floor-scraping hemlines to be seen here, though – instead, Ms Chung makes the trend her own in a sweet, peasant-style smock dress (by Chanel, nonetheless).

Claudia Schiffer

Claudia Schiffer is a serial 70s style stalker. Her key pieces of choice? Printed neckerchiefs, embroidered peasant skirts, high-waisted denim flares and bug-eye sunglasses.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria wouldn’t look out of place if she stumbled into Studio 54 circa 1978 in this all-black, silk-and-sequins jumpsuit.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum took on the 70s trend in a tobacco-coloured, high-necked, wide-legged, key-hole cutout jumpsuit – and, sadly, we’re not sure she won.

Leighton Meester

Gossip Girl Leighton Meester looks a 70s dream in her psychedelic Marc Jacobs dress.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus channels the indomitable fashion spirit of Stevie Nicks in her fringed, floral shawl. Poptastic!

Shenae Grimes

Fringed sleeves, a cutaway front and a floor-skimming hemline; Shenae Grimes ticks all the 70s revival boxes in her black maxi.

Claire Danes

There’s more than a touch of 70s style icon Bianca Jagger about Claire Danes in this sleek Calvin Klein tuxedo dress.

Camilla Belle

Gucci put one of the season’s strongest 70s showings on the catwalk and Camilla Belle captured the spirit of it perfectly, top-to-toe in the label’s glamorous brights.

Fergie

Diane Von Furstenberg was one of the original 70s icons – so it’s little wonder that Fergie chose to channel the designer’s style as she attended her autumn/winter 2011 fashion show in New York.

Rose McGowan

Rose McGowan was boogie-ready at the SAG awards thanks to her hot pink, 70s-inspired plunge-front gown.

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood scored a serious style hit in this peasant-style Gucci dress and knee-high leather boots on the promo trail for her new film The Conspirator.

Isabel Lucas

How wide can you go? Isabel Lucas took the 70s to the streets when she was papped out and about in these monumental flares.

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens demonstrated precisely why the 70s is the era of choice for festival fashionistas in this cute flower power-inspired look at Coachella.

Karen Elson

Halterneck? Tick. Print? Tick. All-in-one? Tick. Karen Elson got it right on all fronts at Marc Jacobs’ autumn/winter 2011 show.

Paris Hilton

With her hair braid, tie-die maxi and glitzy gold cover-up, Paris Hilton made the perfect 70s statement on the streets of LA.

VV Brown

Singer VV Brown looked 70s-tastic in this gold lame maxi dress with contrasting high neck and deep cuffs at the Prince’s Trust Awards.

Kate Moss

Never one to let a trend pass her by (though, admittedly, she’s long since been an ‘out’ 70s devotee), Kate Moss rocked this long-sleeved pink maxi dress and sheepskin gilet for lunch at luxe London eatery The Wolseley. We’re giving her a bonus point for that scarf tied onto her handbag, too.

Tess Daly

Tess Daly killed two trends with one outfit at the TRIC Awards. Her split-leg MaxMara jumpsuit ticks both the 70s and tangerine boxes.

Lindsay Lohan

Night fever! Lindsay Lohan appeared to be channelling a young John Travolta in this pair of high-waisted white flares recently.

Celebs Hairstyles 2011

Hilary Duff

Natalie Portman (29) at the 2011 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. This is a new tight bun. It has a cute big knot that suits her age and a tight structure that is appropriate at a very formal event. It may be too conservative for a prom.

Wendie Malick (60) starts the new year with a classic bob hairstyle which curls in sharply at the ends. In her naturally very dark brown hair she has lots of moderate highlights. The length is cut to mid-way between her chin and shoulders. It’s a very simple low-maintenance style for women over 40. It’s very flattering for her face.

Diane Warren (54) has a short haircut not unlike Liza Minnelli’s. It very dark if not actually black. But her bangs are fuller, more choppy and asymmetrical. The top profile is a little shorter than you might expect.

Carey Mulligan (25) has a new short hairstyle. It’s cute and sideswept or side-parted and has a full fringe. It falls below her ears but also wraps around them. That last design element won’t appeal to all women, but it does make this style more dimensional, dramatic, and free.

Carey last year looked like this:

Chantelle Houghton (27) at the UK premiere of Morning Glory. She is looking very glamorous with this pretty, slightly messy updo. Chantelle is a model with eyes and lips similar to Paris Hilton’s! She once said: “I look like Paris Hilton, not on purpose but it’s just the way it turned out.” A few days ago at another venue she had her hair down; she was wearing over-the-top hair extensions. This is a much better formal hairstyle. It is classy, not contrived, and makes her look more mature.

Rachel McAdams (32) has a light brown medium hairstyle with chunky layers. It is classically center-parted and a little flirty, but it may not be ideally balanced. The heavy layers at the side of her face have a length that is more common with long hairstyles. If they were a little shorter this would be perfect!

Nancy O’Dell (44) looks all of 28 in this new picture. The latest addition to Entertainment Tonight has beautiful long hair with gorgeous highlights. She typically stands out as much as the celebrities she covers. Her style above has some slightly 80s-inspired feminine shape, softness, and volume.

Tempestt Bledsoe (37) has a huge mid-length black hairstyle. It’s a daring bob-like ‘do which is almost as big as an afro on the sides. It would be better if the top was fuller in the middle to balance it out. As is it looks too flat at the crown. Tempestt is the African American celebrity who recently got a new gig as host of Clean House.

Jeannie Mai (32) hit the red carpet all glammed up at a recent event with a fun chignon and black fishnet veil like what you see at a funeral. Jeannie was previously a makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics. She is now a fashion critic and the host of “How Do I Look?” on the Style Network. It is one of the most popular makeover programs today.

Cameron Diaz (38) at the Green Hornet premiere with long soft waves. This has been her common look for ages. Does anyone miss her short hairstyles? It’s been a long time–about ten years–since she had cute crops. There’s nothing wrong with this style but she is definitely overdue for a makeover.

Michelle Williams (30) didn’t have to experience much change to get a trendy pixie, but she’s made her hair more interesting with a hot new light red color. Will 2011 be another year of pixies? It’s difficult to guess because last year some stars were letting their locks grow out while others were cutting it all off.

Jane Lynch (50) has a short haircut which is a little more dramatic than usual for the mature celebrity. It’s higher at the crown, has messier bangs, and it’s enhanced with many small flips. There are some signs more subtlely flippy haircuts are becoming a trend. But even if they aren’t becoming fashionable, the design feature works well on older women.

Julianne Hough (22) switched her haircolor back to blonde, which was a good decision. The brown and red really didn’t do much for the blue-eyed singer/dancer. Here she looks more natural with her long, thick hair, but she’s probably still using extensions for volume.

Gayle King (56) has a soft thick bob with medium brown color and muted copper highlights. It’s heavier than you would expect on the sides; a few layers there would make it less chunky and clunky. The long and broken casual fringe reaches almost down to her eyes; it provides contrast to everything else which is so thick and together. Her hair looks very healthy but the big flips are too extreme in context.

Kirsten Dunst (28) with a medium bob looks cute and pretty. The big formal barette is a nice touch. Her total look is youthful and simple, but the wide retro bob shape tends to make her head look larger. The small section that falls to the side of her forehead, however, adds elegance.

Jasika Nicole (31) has a cute short black hairstyle. It’s an afro in the making but her bangs could use a trim to clean up her hairline. Snip those extreme short curls and maybe a few on top around the profile to make it perfect. Isn’t it about time stylish afros made a comeback? The short crops of African American women in recent years are getting old fast.

Liza Lapira (29) has healthy long Asian hair with a wonderful sheen. But the style itself needs work. The top half from the crown to her chin is great; but the bottom is a hot mess. The ends are too chunky and they are next to some strands that are super thin and messy. They look like cheap extensions.

Chelsea Handler (35) is now a late-night comedienne but was once a model. Does she make a good hair model? This is a popular medium style but her roots need a touchup. The entire coloring actually needs to be redone. It’s blonde from the top to eye level and then light red to the ends. Her shirt color inadvertently draws attention to the irregular colors (because it’s so similar to the shade of blonde).

Joan Rivers (77) is back as the host of Fashion Police, so why is the “top cop” wearing a 2008 bob in 2011? Last year Carly Fiorina was “overheard” slamming Barbara Boxer for her bob which was “so yesterday.” Joan has a great chin-length cut, but it’s just not fashionable right now unless she’s decided to start a new trend and women are following her.

Jenna Ushkowitz (24) is the Korean American actress on a hit TV show. Her hair is hot! It is mostly all down but the part that is up adds some fun and flirty sass. The volume on this design is attractive. The “half-up” section helps make it seem thicker on top and more balanced with the bold long bottom sections.

Paris Hilton (29) may not be known exclusively for her elegance, but this red carpet chignon was just perfect. It was one of the stand-out formal hairstyles at the Golden Globes. The side view shows the lovely shape at the front and the pinned bun at the back. It’s great for a prom or wedding in 2011.

Savannah Van (17) is a happy teen singer who likes big hairstyles. This is actually one of her smaller ones. Her thick long blonde tresses are enhanced with a high-bling sparkly headband tucked under instead of over her hair. It’s a cute style statement.

Sandra Bullock (46) with heavy bangs. This is a major makeover! Since she became a celebrity Sandra has apparently never had bangs. (A review of earlier pictures of her didn’t reveal any.) It’s a little harder to recognize the popular actress, but is the hairstyle itself flattering? A poll on People magazine’s Style Watch web page leaves about 50% unconvinced. They want the old Sandra back. The problem here is the style suits much younger women–like teens! Very few ladies her age choose this cut. The harshness of the blunt bangs is compounded by the virtually jet black haircolor. Sandra does have some brown highlights but they are very subdued, barely noticeable, and there aren’t many of them. She isn’t going through a mid-life crisis, but she did get divorced last year, and that may have played a role in her wanting to do something completely different. Many women admit they change their hair after a breakup.

Demi Moore (48) with a big retro hairdo. It is reasonably neat and perhaps best classified as semi-formal, but it just seems a bit too heavy and lacking in shape. It needs to be tighter and rounder so it appears less like a helmet and more feminine. It could also use more symmetry so it looks more polished.

Malin Akerman (32) is a beautiful Swedish-Canadian actress with a simple but sexy blonde cut. Roots needs recoloring, but the length and shape are perfect. It works just as well as a casual style as it does at special event thanks to its understated wavy elegance. This photo was actually taken last year; she had the same thing recently but her cut and pic in 2010 was slightly better.

Jayma Mays (31) wearing a thick medium bob with half bangs. The layers are okay, but she would look better and more natural with more of the ends further towards the center. Here they draw too much focus to her long neck because of the volume, angle, and bluntness. Softer, freer tips are more feminine.

Carrie Underwood (27) is still about as popular for her hairstyles as her music. She’s also overtaken Kelly Clarkson as a young style icon for inspiration. Her Golden Globe choice in 2011 as shown above was formal enough for a bride. Although the loose pieces on both sides are a classical design, they are just a little too long. Carrie had a similar updo last year but without the tendrils. They can soften a very tight updo, but so can a smile.

Sinatta (42) has a head full of gorgeous black curls. You have to love the way they catch the light because of the sparkly black-and-white contrast. Her long hair has nearly too much volume but it does a lot for her. It’s dramatic yet tasteful. Hopefully this will become a trend among African American women. It may be time for the fashion pendulum to swing back from short to medium or long hairstyles.

Stacey Solomon (21) toned down her previous over-the-top hair design which made beauty news headlines. She used to have extremely big hair with much larger and blonder extensions. Stacey’s latest enhancements are closer to her natural haircolor, but could be darker still for the most flattering and polished finish.

Rachel G. Fox (14) has a long teen hairstyle with dark blonde highlights. It’s a good color choice, but a makeover to make it four to six inches shorter would be a nice improvement. Many teens are very reluctant to cut off much of their hair, but there is a clear proportional problem here for the diminutive starlet. You need to work with not only your face shape but also head size.

Laura Vandervoort (26) on the TV show V. This was in a scene between sweet long-haired Lisa (Laura) and the very short-haired brunette villain Anna (Morena Baccarin). The contrast between the two women’s personalities and their hairstyles could not have been more striking. The beauty of Laura’s sexy style is its perfect length as well as the mix of thick and thin sections. The few subtle layers don’t hurt, either. Her half bangs complete a fully casual look that’s modern, wavy, and cool. (Courtesy ABC)

Caroline Sunshine (15) with big curls. She is living up to her name with a sunny disposition and pretty golden blonde color. The warm shade goes nicely with her dark brown eyes. If you are a teenager who enjoys lots of volume, you might like the design of Caroline. It is quite easy and it gives you a fun, cute style. You’ll need a medium and/or large barrel curling iron.

Michelle LaFrance has heavy sideswept bangs that are broken in only one place. This is not unlike Nicole Richie’s look a few years ago that she had all the time. It’s stylish and feminine as well as simple and low maintenance. Because so much of the hairdo is neat, you have to watch the parting to make sure it doesn’t get too messy. Michelle’s is borderline.

Danneel Harris (31) in a recent photo with a mid-length formal design. It is easy to create and has a few pretty faux layers for extra drama. The thin sections she curled add a touch of evening elegance. She is wearing about three different colors including a few very thin slices of blonde. Danneel is a former Big Sexy Hair model.

Michelle Obama (47) at a health promotion event with a new short hairdo. The First Lady has shown a lot of diversity in her black hairstyles. She is unlike her much more conservative predecessor, Laura Bush, who chose one and stuck with it for eight years. Michelle’s ‘do is very dimensional thanks to the extra volume, flips, curls, and twists. (Courtesy CNN)

Frances Fisher (58) with long red hair. Her style could hardly be simpler, but it’s shiny, healthy and very attractive. What a blowout! The ends look razored and Frances has perfectly transitioning color from the red base to a lighter shade. It catches the light and creates radiance. Risky length for a woman her age but she’s pulled it off brilliantly!

Tess Daly (41) with smoking hot hair. Wow! This looks like something Jessica Simpson or Gisele Bundchen would wear–or a woman half her age. Did the mature presenter pull it off? Yes! Very big waves without a fringe make a bold fashion statement–or a suggestion you’re open to a hair modeling contract.

Brie Larson (21) has a messy style with bangs. It may be too busy; it is curly, wavy, and twisty all at the same time–and it has an uneven fringe. But many teenagers will see it as an ideal design that is casual and cool. Brie has that just-got-out-of-bed look. The medium cut is very thick and wide, which means it’s best suited to any face shape besides round. Note that this look is risky if you don’t keep your color updated. Messy hair and bad haircolor could spell disaster.

Kelly Rowland (29) with a cool crop! How do you like her stylish pixie with long bangs at sharp angles? It’s basically a knockoff of the 2010 black hairstyles trend which was very short on one side. Kelly’s cut, however, is better than its similar predecessors. It looks more sophisticated, elegant, and professional. There are finely razored ends and a few subtle highlights which are widely dispersed. It’s perfect for work and doesn’t need to be adjusted for a night out on the town.

Esmee Denters (22) with an extremely funky updo. Her hair has a loosely curled fringe and looks very messy. What is the inspiration? Upon closer inspection it appears to be 1950s rockabilly meets 1960s bouffant and 1980s punk. Only an uninhibited recording artist could accept multiple-era hairstyling in a new updo this wild. Is it wearable for anyone else? Removing the big front curl could make it sexy; otherwise it’s merely a conversation topic.

Mo’Nique (43) has a fun hairdo. The popular celebrity is still making waves in the entertainment world and has the glamour to match her career. This medium hair style is bold and has lots of volume, but it’s a little too high and/or thick at the crown. With big curls you always need to make sure the proportions are balanced on the sides and top.

Emma Willis (34) with a simple short hairstyle. It’s an example of one option if you’re growing out a pixie. You should be able to do this easy one yourself in five minutes or less. Super low maintenance, it’s ideal for busy students and any pro on the go. No need to fuss: part and depart.

Lo Bosworth (24) with sexy wavy hair. It’s heavier on one side and just clears the eye. It’s not quite symmetrical; it’s forward on the left and back to the ear on the right. The look is basic but cute without being pretentious. Lo has a new book out and this picture was captured at her book signing.

Haley Reinhart (18) lights up a room with her 100-watt smile and glamorous curls. This is a great teen hairstyle especially for girls like her who are extroverts. The American Idol contestant impressed the judges and is going to Hollywood. Keep an eye out for this pretty rising star with the long piecy hair. (Courtesy Fox)

Hofit Golan has dramatic flips which recreate a 1970s vibe yet also make her hair layered half-way down. It’s kind of fun for the evening. Hofit’s tresses are different from most in the way they fall right at the corners of both eyes. Overall the shape is reasonably effective but her color needs a lot of work. She looks like Faith Hill, who is also lazy about her haircolor, and leaves her roots showing too often.

Cara Buono (36) also has a modern take on a retro hairstyle. The volume and shape are reminiscent of ladies’ looks in the 1960s to 1980s. It’s slightly raised at the crown and completely off the face. It is also blown out from the temple on the left and set with a lot of hairspray so it stands out two to three inches. Cara’s medium design is finished with some sweet curls at the ends. Definitely stylish and classy–and even flirty.

Emma Henry (15) was one of several very young teen contestants who made a splash recently on AI. The aspiring singer’s choice for her national debut was Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” But neither one of her dramatic hair colors is natural. Emma has a cool two-tone style that makes it appear as if she has platinum blonde on top and black underneath. The clever technique adds pop to existing layers (or creates faux ones). Her casual bangs are very heavy but also quite intriguing due to the alternating colors and spiky shape. (Courtesy Fox)

Zain Verjee (36) has an elegant short haircut. It is a cross between the hairstyles of Laura Bush and the late Princess Diana (her epic cut). The front photo doesn’t show the light feathering on part of the side. In the 80s they took that design element too far. Done in moderation, however, it adds subtle details which appeal to many women in their late 30s and early 40s (if not older, too). Zain’s hair is very thick and it would be better if it were layered. Now it seems a bit like a helmet. (Courtesy CNN)

Laurie Holden (27) looks like actress Sara Paxton. This new ‘do falls just past the top of her shoulders. Her lightly reddish blonde creation has feminine texture. There are a few soft waves on the sides and one large wave across her forehead. A slight improvement would be to fix that top part so it’s not broken up. Otherwise it’s a decent design that is flexible enough for the day and a semi-formal evening.

Madison Pettis (12) is a pre-teen girl who is a star of the future but has already been in show biz half her life. As you can see the lucky young lady is blessed with pretty hair. Madison, indeed, is one of very few actresses who is naturally curly–at least in a memorable way like Melina Kanakaredes. Here she has automatic texture and volume that most girls can only dream of having or get after lots of work.

Anne Sweeney (52) has a simple mid-length hairstyle. The multimillionaire media mogul is overdue for a trim of some kind. Her half bangs are already getting in her eye. The subtle and moderate highlights, however, look perfect. The multitonal mix includes very wide panels of brown contrasted with very thin slices of blonde. It is a rather dimensional style with sharp bends at her neck. Her cut is low-maintenance but it would be ideal if it were an inch or two shorter.

Stephanie Savage (43) looks stunning with her gorgeous haircolor. Dressing up the long locks of this middle-aged woman are two tantalizing shades: medium and light red. It’s one of the hottest combinations of the year so far. Her piecey waves are graduated to get thinner the closer they get to the ends. Smooth transitions expertly done for both shape and color like this make a lasting impression. If you love warm tones, consider this wonderful beauty.

Lea Michele (24) on the red carpet with maximum volume. Wow! That is quite the mane. The brunette power of a twenty something celebrity rarely gets this thick. It is borderline over the top–as in the excesses of the 80s–but she hasn’t quite crossed the line. (Lea has previously admitted using extensions and must have them here once again.) The mini fringe (one small section) from the parting is unexpected and interesting. It adds a youthful touch.

Irshad Manji (42) with what we could call “saw blade” bangs. Her short fringe has sharp points, and it appears the base of her “sideburns” is also pointed. It is virtually a pixie. She is likely in her early 40s, but this very short cut suits women about 21 years old and up. Just make sure you have the forehead to pull it off. (Courtesy CNN)

Jennifer Aniston (41) must have found the best deep conditioner, because she has hair as healthy as a teenager’s! This new picture reveals her favorite length and shape, which is quite basic and certainly classic. But Jennifer has fresh colors. There is a fabulous base shade of light brown and face-framing highlights in medium to dark blonde. It’s nice to see her do something a little different, and the color makeover with perfect roots is so flattering, isn’t it? A fine step up from 2010.

Emily Maynard (24) with partial braids. This girl from North Carolina is currently on The Bachelor. She is one of the most cute contestants and is expected to receive a marriage proposal soon. As you get older, complete braids may look silly, but one section only is a fun enhancement and hardly detracts from your true age. Hers start in the center and cover half her hairline. They are tightly tied to maintain her profile. They don’t scream for attention but make Emily more elegant and pretty. (Courtesy ABC)

Chloe Moretz (14) wearing a chin-length bob with big finger waves. She may not know it, but this teen girl has a very 1930s hairstyle. You may recall from old movies it was all the rage back then–although smaller waves were more common. Since the look hasn’t come back–perhaps the only exception being Liv Tyler a few years ago–it’s a daring choice for the young starlet. If you’re not used to or comfortable with lots of weight on one side, you might skip it. But it’s different and kind of adorable with the little flips. Beats a plain old straight bob, which can get boring very fast.

Dianna Agron (23) with an elegant updo. This female celeb has a very big chignon that could be improved. There is consistency with the front, top and back which are all slightly loose. That is all great, but the shape of the bun leaves a little to be desired. It seems somewhat out of balance. Dianna’a soft bangs fall beside and almost into her eyes; that is a feature you may either love or hate.

Lisa (thirtysomething) with a chin-length bob. She has lots of thick, small curls. The front needs a trim to remove the new bangs which have started to appear. But the volume is fine the way it is now. Wide bobs were fairly common in the 90s and women may be ready again to put them back in fashion. It’s definitely about time to break free from the tired obsession with straight bobs. (Courtesy CNN)

Dana Delany (54) with auburn haircolor. She is defying her age with both the color and length. Instead of short, Dana’s locks are quite long, and she is dark red rather than her natural brown. The radiant actress has long layers with finely razored ends. Her cut is straight and simple but also sexy. It is really just the most popular layered design on a different level. It was created with a higher-than-average level of professional skill and a less common hue. That’s a smart way to freshen up an old classic.

Jennifer Lopez (41) brings a lot of glamour to Americal Idol that we never received from Paula Abdul. She often has long hairstyles which are quite hot and new makeup that is sparkly or glossy. JLo, despite being a woman over 40, still digs the bling. Here Latina Lovely has amped up the volume with extreme extensions. She’d get an edge, however, by lightly teasing all parts of them so the piecey areas don’t stand out. They always make hair look fake, especially when there isn’t a perfect color match. They seem like highlights and you wonder why they start low down instead of near the crown. (Courtesy Fox)

Ashley Argota (18) is a lovely teenage girl with Filipino background. She has a beautiful smile and great curls. They are a little frizzy in the middle but otherwise very glam and age perfect. Her style is more casual than formal but you could pull it off at prom. It was her choice for her big Birthday bash.

Kayla (23) has lustrous long locks which are entirely bang-free and spiraling into control with ultra-thick curls. The gentle “S” shape from the parting across her hairline down the sides looks effortless and sexy. It’s in a wonderful neutral haircolor. The top half looks perfect but the bottom is simply too bulky. Note: extensions of this size and shape may not do your figure justice and, indeed, can make you look fatter.

Jane Fonda (73) is the queen of short flippy hairstyles. She always has more flips that any other female celebrity. That makes her high maintenance but also as attractive as much younger ladies. Although this is her standard style, Jane changed her color. She used to be blonde; now there’s a solid brown base and more subtle highlights. It is much more flattering. Other design features are a few short bangs and extra height. Overall it is elegantly messy, quite symmetrical, and somewhat flashy, too. Jane stands out in a crowd because of how rare this style is.

Maria Menounos (32) is still unbelievably single despite her warm personality and gorgeous hair. Consistent with the style preferences she’s had for many years, Maria’s locks are long and highlighted. She has a few thin blonde streaks and some light brown tones, too. Without bangs it is very simple, but it’s a clean and polished look that suits any occasion. Notice how you can easily create the appearance of layers with waves. (Courtesy NBC)

Kelly Osbourne (26) is a blunt blonde in more ways that one. She has a new gig as a fashion critic opposite Joan Rivers where she tells it like it is–praising and slamming evening dresses with her reasonable red carpet reviews. Even the high layers are very blunt and almost to the point of being distracting. The contrast between the finely razored ends and the harshly cut sections is daring and even jarring. The ever-present danger of blunt styles is they require extra attention because some people may think you cut your own hair.

Davetta Sherwood (27) as you might have guessed is a former model. This young African American woman is very pretty. Her mid-length black haircut is shiny and chunky. Davetta has styled and scrunched her tresses after adding some messy twists and mega curls. It’s sexy but the half bangs could be improved with softer edges where they start in the center. The dark color and bold contrast demand a gradual transition for optimal aesthetics–or no fringe.

Nicole Kidman (43) at the GRAMMY Awards with a fancy dress and hot hair. It’s wavy and wonderful. There’s nothing new about it except the golden reddish haircolor which is brightest at the front. As usual Nicole is one of the most feminine stars to grace the red carpet not only in the way she dresses but also how she carries herself. There may be a conservative fashion trend this year where we don’t see changes in cuts, just colors.

Bunmi Mojekwu (22) confidently punches out a fashion statement with two-tone hair drama. Her stick-straight tresses have two colors and two layers; dark red is made to appear layered above jet black. Bunmi has very long bangs which are slightly fragmented across her entire forehead. Inspired by the zebra? This intense idea susbtitutes red for white and in places the haircolors alternate with either thick or thin panels. This lowlights style is a trend but it’s not really mainstream yet. The popularity is among girls, especially teenagers, who need something very different and typically choose alternative hairstyles.

Monica (30) rivals screen siren Halle Berry with her beautifully clean complexion and black pixie hairstyle. Monica’s cute cut is a little more stylish and posh than Halle’s perfected coif thanks mostly to the highest section and its general shape. The ultra short bang in the middle adds flair next to the raised top which is moderately messy. Cool and pro at the same time but it’s best suited for women with average to small-sized foreheads.

Paula Adbul (48) can still pass for a woman in her 30s. Here she is showing off her new haircolors on Leno. The mature celebrity jazzed up the forever fashionable hairstyle that is quite possibly the #2 all-time most-requested design (long, graduated layers). The highlighting technique is also quite classical with respect to position (bright from the center on top). According to a running poll on this site, about 50% of women who are getting their color done in 2011 will, like Ms. Abdul, have bold highlights. That number is about the same as in 2010 and the previous five years, too. (Courtesy NBC)

Izabel Goulart (26) is a stunning Brazilian fashion model who has done some work for Victoria’s Secret. If you like wavy hairstyles, it doesn’t get much better than this Hispanic perfection. Notice how her dress colors and ruching are so cleverly coordinated. Everything is catching the light in a way that nearly sparkles. Such understated elegance from a woman her age hints she is mature beyond her years–or has a top-flight stylist. Many teens will love her long design and rate it five stars.

Ashley Herbert (26) at the SI shoot on The Bachelor with a beachy hairstyle. She is usually very neat and professional but broke out of her comfort zone with the cut of the Weekend Californian Surfer Girl. The disheveled look as if you’ve been out in the sun, surf, and sand all day appeals to those who spend most of their time outdoors. It’s cool with jeans and a T-shirt if your personality is ultra casual and you can appreciate messy hair that can make you appear as if you just got out of bed. Probably more men like it than women. Ashley is really hot with the ragged layers which have been whipped by the wind. Not bad for a dentist, huh?! (Courtesy ABC)

Angela Lindvall (30) is a veteran supermodel who has not just a pretty face but also fantastic hair. Her medium cut has some grouped layers that start to wrap around her chin similar to the Rachel Haircut or a bob. But she has pulled the opposite side over to her ear for an asymmetrical style that is cute and relaxed. Everything else is more or less centered.

Anne Drewa (33) has ultra fine layers and heavy sideswept bangs. She has the most beautiful shade of pale blonde; the consistency throughout makes it look natural. There is something about this hot medium hairstyle that is different. Is it the extra thickness? The ends are quite blunt. It is a very polished cut, but perhaps too much to the point where it’s a bit like a helmet. You can fix that if some parts are teased a little. Anne, who is an evening news anchor from British Columbia, Canada, may do a Peter Jennings and replace Diane Sawyer. Click plus sign above for 2x size photo. Her stated age is based on university graduation (2000). Apparently many people think she looks much younger than her age; it’s the most searched thing about her. It could be because of her haircolor. (Courtesy CTV)

Rebecca Hazelwood (28) has choppy bangs with long hair. It’s an easygoing style with attractive shine.

Janina Gavankar (27) has the lustrous black hair only Asian women are lucky enough to enjoy. She’s the best of the Indian and Dutch worlds. Her locks look graduated, getting wider. There may be too much contrast between the messy curls and the neat bulk (everywhere else). The style error could be due to extensions, which she really doesn’t need.

Haley Ramm (18) has a medium bob for teenagers. The popular cut has been around for decades; the modern element is the razored layers. They are subtle and sweet. It is an example of an unfussy option; it requires minimal daily maintenance. Haley has long bangs which are full and grouped; they bend a little instead of being stick straight. Bobs are risky if you have a pointed chin but at least hers isn’t short. She isn’t really a redhead, incidentally; the warm glow is from the lighting.

Serene Branson (31) with a very long bob hairstyle. Nowadays it’s fairly uncommon among reporters and celebrities despite being a classic. Although it’s a nice enough design and perfectly brushed, it’s not the most flattering on Serene. She has a long face and this cut simply makes it look longer. She has great hair but a better choice would be medium length or at least wider. She could also benefit from more texture, but this cut does make her appear younger. (Courtesy ABC)

Madison Leisle (11) is a child star and has a cute bob for kids. It’s shorter than chin length and has an off-center parting. It needs nothing but simple combing to fix every day. The popular beauty of the basic bob is the cut does almost all the work for you.

Halle Berry (44) has a messy pixie. The very short sides are neat but somewhat layered; whereas the top is filled with beachy personality. The roughed-up edges and multiple angles create a cool spot of organized chaos. This pixie has rugged flair worthy of a weekend warrior or outdoorsy girl. It’s a reintroduction of her earlier style but it’s so copied it’s now virtually iconic. Great option if you’re bored with your bob and want to go shorter.

Jennifer Aniston (42) has a new haircut and it’s a medium bob. Love Jen; not thrilled by the style. It isn’t very exciting. There are several current bobs and this version is the least creative of them all. It’s not as if we’ve never seen this before. It really isn’t new or original. How is this different from many what others already have and she herself had in 2001?

Reese Witherspoon (34) walked the red carpet in high style on Sunday night with a formal ponytail. Pulled back and raised, her blonde hair stood out–literally and figuratively–and helped the bubbly actress make a grand entrance.

Scarlett Johansson (26) has a new bob with lots of sass. How cute is that?! The charming picture of Scarlett clearly shows her creative texture, but it doesn’t reveal that it is heavily weighted to one side. This is a fun new hairstyle without bangs. It’s different in the way the bends are more like kinks than curls. Kids in the 80s had something like this. Teenagers and other women like her in their 20s can rock it today.

Cate Blanchett (41) with her latest short haircut. It is neat and stylish with a touch of finesse that many mature women can appreciate. The dimensional pizazz and clever integration of the heavy layers represent a fine example of elegant half bangs. Pale red and light blonde haircolors complete the sophisticated evening look of the talented thespian.

Hailee Steinfeld (14) looks totally adorable with her sweet updo. The shape is classical and classy. The default style of the front section is usually dull, but Hailee has enhanced it with a thin headband that is bright and slightly sparkly.

Sunrise Coigney (38) with a geometric bob. It is chin-length with unusually sharp corrners. The straightness stands out immediately; the blunt ends strike a harsh note. The clean lines are well-defined and virtually at right angles with a point on the jawline. It’s quite a masculine idea but the full fringe with blonde highlights softens it. The bright and thin streaks fan out evenly. Although it is undoubtedly simple it is somehow provocative. You definitely need the right personality to pull off this imposing and potentially intimidating cut. The tone is completely no nonsense; it suits a tough businesswoman. (Courtesy ABC)

Diane Kruger (34) shows us how to style thin hair into a wavy bob. It is a medium formal hairstyle which is loose and something of an updated or modified 1930s bob; but it’s mid-length instead of short. There is casual elegance but it’s almost too messy for this curious shape. If Diane’s design was made into a half updo that would solve the problem. It seems to make her look a little older, but it is piecey and feminine.

Elizabeth Houston made a guest appearance on Poker Stars. She was the most stunning loose canon and is the hottest poker player on TV. She would certainly give Evelyn Ng a run for her money. Her hair isn’t so bad, either! The blonde from Canada has long locks with special crimping. The distance between each ‘turn’ is greater than usual and makes everything more like a traditional wavy hairstyle, but it’s fresh and sexier. The uniqueness and consistency everywhere makes it memorable. It is a masterpiece and just looks as if it was created by a top professional. Elizabeth provides an ideal model for any lady who wants to make a splash at a posh event. (Courtesy PokerStars.Net)

Beau Garrett (28) has a shoulder-length hairdo with sideswept bangs which are heavy but pretty. Her texture is rich and messy in just the right way with the use of extensions.

Lara Spencer (40) has to talk about pop culture idols every day as an entertainment reporter–and look about as glam as them, too. Full-bodied and fabulous, Lara has layers that start at the mid point of her head. Her mane is sexy in an understated way but also very solid looking. There’s nothing really breaking up into pieces perhaps to keep it very neat and shiny. Nevertheless the blonde shade bounces light in impressive fashion and isn’t far off her skin tone. (Courtesy CBS)

Anna Faris (34) chopped off all her hair and is the new bobbed girl in town. She used to be long and wavy without bangs.

But now Anna is short and straight with a full fringe. That is modestly parted and this is the ultimate in simplicity, no question. But it’s always fun to see female celebrities after such a head-turning makeover. It’s certainly tougher for them to take the plunge with the whole world watching, but this is a safe change because it’s already been tried and tested by millions of women.

Teresa Palmer (25) takes a page from history with a braided updo. Wrapped up and retro, her stacked thing is rarely seen today; but she has old-world charm. You can pull off conservatively fashioned up hairstyles with confidence, and enjoy the prissy feeling that you may not find with plain updos.

Miley Cyrus (18) snatched Justin Bieber’s cut; maybe you can, too. It lacks the refined elegance of JB’s style in terms of fine feathering, and the bangs appear to have a piece missing, but overall it’s alright. If there’s any men’s hairstyle that could work on a girl, it’s Justin’s. That’s because there’s nothing harsh about the teen singer’s sig cut, nor definitively masculine. It’s soft and fine. Now, to the question of how it looks on Miley… certainly, it’s a radical departure from her high-mass extensions, which is a good thing. Does she have the right face shape for this? Yes. And, given her growing independence and wild ways, we should expect something unexpected with her tresses sooner or later instead of this skit-only creation. It might also help her shed her previous public image, but many teens aren’t daring enough to make the commitment and go this short after years at great lengths. (Courtesy SNL/NBC)

Ashthon Jones (24) from American Idol has notice-me pipes and really extreme hair. What would you call that? A faux afro? It’s fun and pretty plus it sparkles all over. That black girl knows how to turn up the volume.

Malin Akerman (32) lighting up the room. Great photo of the blonde actress! Is hair that is twice the length of your head (crown to chin) the ideal proportion? It is working very well for Malin. There is an attractive combination of sweet (waves beside her forehead) and sexy (those very big curls).

Cheryl Dent (30s) has a cute hairstyle with half bangs. It is “bobbish.” This is one way to “power up” a layered bob. On her right Cheryl has flips out at the mid-way point; then it curls at the ends. If you like free-spirit styles which are casually asymmetrical, this one is fun. She has a playful mix of red haircolor with blonde panels which are thin at the front and wider in the middle. It seems “summery” because of the busy shape, almost-messy texture, and light colors. She looks as if she’s been outside enjoying the sun.

Rebecca Gayheart (39) was curly for a very long time but has finally put her flat iron to good use. She went the traditional route to the most popular cut: the long and layered hairstyle. However, because of her relatively small head size Rebecca would be better advised to reduce it by at least four inches.

Katherine Moennig (33) has a short hairstyle that is edgy in both its cool cut and trendy color. Ombre is rarely successful, but this version works because of the layers. They break up the flatness and the extra texture also contributes to its success. Katherine’s layered shag is modern but not outrageous since it is asymmetrical and has two tones which are low-contrast. It can look playful on the right woman because it’s a borderline rock star style.

J-Lyn is an African American singer who now sports an irregular hairdo. See the perks of inventive layering and highlighting? A path of blonde dashes marks the perimeter minus an inch or two. Her special fringe sweeps and dips with added weight making the lowest point in the center. The wow factor gets an additional boost with blonde extensions.

Judith Godreche (38) traded in her sexy bob for a cute pixie. She also went from blonde to brunette. Her bangs are gone and so are all the layers. That’s what you call a serious makeover, but it’s much more difficult to recognize her, especially with the new tan! Spring or summer could be the ideal seasons to make the leap of faith for this new hairstyle, but you may prefer to reverse the hue change and go blonde for the summer.

Janet Jackson (44) is one of the latest ladies to lop her locks in one of the most startling makeovers of 2011. Did you see this one coming? She has enjoyed extreme lengths and curls for years. But now her black hairstyle is very short and entirely straight. Janet has layered bangs which are angled and broken up in a playful and casual fashion. She also has sharply pointed sideburns. (Courtesy CNN)

Heather Morris (24) fanned out her long extensions to show off this mermaid-inspired design. There are soft waves everywhere and everything is brought forward to the front for extra emphasis. Her own hair is likely double-processed, but it is healthy and this big style could make a lasting impression.

Yvonne Strahovski (28) looks like a Hollywood star with this elegant hairstyle. It has the volume and color we have come to expect of women with her calling. There is an attractive mix of thin and grouped sections. The long wave that is partly piecey and falls over her eye is sassy! It makes a suitable pick for the girl who wants to look formal and a little playful at the same time.

Emma Watson (20). Her evening dress was full of tulle and very girly, but the young star’s haircut is the boyish pixie. The rad snip was unveiled last year and Emma claimed she found it liberating. Was she simply putting on a brave face? Probably not. Several months later she still seems to be pleased with it. Nothing is happening at the neat top. The best part is the cool bangs which are spiky with a variety of lengths and angles. Her “sideburns” are longer than you might expect since everything else is so short, but they assist in making her cut modestly more feminine. It’s obviously not for every woman, but Ms. Watson is wearing it with complete confidence. As pixies go this one is better than average.

Natasha McElhone (41) has a swanky chignon that could pass for a wedding hairstyle. Any bride could wear it comfortably. It’s a sweet updo with the sweeping wave which is long and simple. The trick is the foundation of extra lift dead center at the hairline. One stray bit at the back could be neater if pinned down; other than that it gives beautiful tone for all elegant events.

Jessica Alba (29) has hit the red carpet with divine updos before, but this year in the UK at their most important engagement she tried two rows of braids. Is it better than just one, which is much more common with celebrities today? Maybe. Wrapping the hairline like this into a horizontal version of double french braids creates a highly structured look. Everything is so tight. That makes any frizz more noticeable. With this two-ring style it almost seems the only thing missing is a halo. Her forehead is large, so even though the design itself is acceptable, it’s not her most flattering idea.

Wynter Gordon (25) is a rapidly rising recording artist. The new star went out for the evening with bold colors and big hair. It has cute curls and corkscrew bangs. Wynter’s medium hairstyle is strong, but she’s a petite girl so there is a width issue. Her ‘do is nearly as wide as she is! Does that make it overpowering on her diminutive frame or just fun?

Jena Malone (26) has fine hair cut into a blunt bob with a very straight edge. It is almost entirely free of shape but there is one long layer framing her face. The short design is very simple but unexpectedly contrasted by heavy eye makeup.

Sonia Rockwell (32) has been making waves for a few years on the road to the Hollywood A-list. She is getting her long hair up to a higher level, too. In this photo, Sonia has lots of layers visibly stacked in a casual style on the side from a brush back and hairspray. Her golden brown tresses are highlighted with narrow red panels. On her the base and accent colors are reasonable, but you should see in the gallery on imdb.com what being a brunette does for her eyes. If you forget her hair you will remember she is a photogenic and spirited actress with an infectious smile. :)

Jade Williams (26) could make you frown or cause your eyes pop in alarm: “What was she thinking?” How could such a beautiful girl have such horrible hair?! It’s not clear if it was done on purpose or by accident, but it’s fashionable, so let’s give Jade the benefit of the doubt. Although you can’t draw a line between where one color ends and the other begins, the intense difference is disturbing. The least she could do is choose two colors which go together. The other problem is the plain shape for the reason noted in the previous review.

Sarah Harding (29) was a blonde only a few weeks ago, as she had been for years, but then she suddenly went brunette. However, it doesn’t seem any more positive a development than when Britney Spears did something similar in 2004. The general response of the public (70%) said she looked better as a blonde. The lack of styling doesn’t help sell the new hue, either. Sarah just brushed her hair back, which isn’t really a style. The cut and color are not doing anything for her; they are just too bland, and unsuitable for her reputation and career.

Carrie Underwood (28) loves medium hairstyles and this layered one matches her reputation and our high expectations. Do you like everyday elegance? Notice the playful combination of layers on one side and flips on the other. It’s a sweet mix of horizontal and vertical styling.

Chelsea Kane (22) looks cute with her chin-length bob and chunky bang. Fine layers are getting boring; we need more women with a fresh style that has this spiky edge. It is not unlike the hair model’s design in a print ad a few years ago. Extra lift at the parting makes it pop perfectly. Chelsea has a fun personality and this youthful haircut fits her to a tee. Highly recommended for teens. (Courtesy ABC)

Tamyra Gray (31) also has red hair that is straight, but it’s a hot bob. She has found a fine way to make a simple style very interesting. The primary tone and highlights are so flattering for her skin tone. Those are some sexy colors! The cut is sideswept with an extremely wide parting; it is almost as far on the side of her head as it could be. On the right girl that just makes it cuter.

Christina Hendricks (35) has a shade of red with plenty of pop. It’s not the Fanta color, but it’s getting there. It’s more intense than what most ladies wear today; anything brighter could lead to an arrest by the fashion police! She’s not a natural redhead but she’s a convincing one because of her pale skin. Christina’s medium hairstyle is super thick. Her bangs are long and choppy in the middle. Have you ever observed how there’s something about red hair just after it’s been washed and dried that you don’t get if you’re a blonde or brunette? There is the special finesse of a subtle glow.

Ritzy Bryan’s bob almost seems shattered but unfortunately it’s more like a mop. Piecey hairstyles are popular and easy enough to create in a visually pleasing manner, but the exception is blunt bobs. Ritzy’s is reminiscent of flamboyant fashion designer Betsey Johnson’s trademark tresses, but the singer’s lines aren’t so severe. Even so, a little bit of curling iron use could quickly remove the “helmet head.”

Josie Ho Chiu Yi has underlayers worthy of an ultra-creative musician. There is platinum blonde in a very cool tone, which is not far off artic white; and underneath it’s very dark like jet black. Messy as if it was already tossed around during a rock concert, Josie also has bangs with a mind of their own. Her fragmented fringe draws extra attention from the different hues so close to the white top.

Lacey Schwimmer (22) is shown in this pic from a side view with what curiously appears to be hair that was spray-painted? After her infamous incident on Dancing With The Stars this season, now it looks more like she’s been in the auto shop than the beauty shop! There is some moderation by not using the polar opposite colors. This is Lacey’s second attempt at the fab fad and this time she has a faux fade.

Who Wore It Best?

Olivia Palermo VS Victoria Beckham

For a screening of new movie The Ledge a couple of weeks ago, Olivia Palermo pulled back her hair and popped on this zesty Victoria Beckham design with a eclectic choice of accessories: embellished brass cuff, hot pink petal clutch and leopard print heels.

Whenever we see a Victoria Beckham dress on a celeb, though, it’s bound to have been worn before – by the designer herself. Well, you would, wouldn’t you?! VB gave this beauty its first public outing back in November, when she took it out to dinner along with her favourite Victoria bag.

WINNER: There’s nothing in it when you’re just looking at two gorgeous ladies in a gorgeous dress – so it’s Posh’s flawlessly sleek accessorising that nudges her into the top spot.

Kate Middleton vs Sarah Jessica Parker

Kate Middleton‘s love affair with Alexander McQueen is about as well-documented as it gets. So we couldn’t help but feel that this cable-knit, sailor-style dress was a sartorially spot-on choice as part of her Canada tour wardrobe.

…It also fits with the austerity drive too, as it’s not a new-season design. In fact, Sarah Jessica Parker wore the same dress in navy (along with a punchy pair of red mules and contrasting tan clutch) to celebrate her husband Matthew Broderick being awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame all the way back in 2006.

WINNER: We can’t help but feel that Kate’s take on this dress is a little uninspired. SJP edges it thanks to her fearless shoe choice.

Olivia Palermo vs Elen Rivas

Just when we thought Olivia Palermo couldn’t get any cooler, she shows up on the front row of a Couture show in Paris wearing a stunning lampshade dress from Zara – yes, it’s from the high street! – accessorised to the hilt with feathers and bling. Bravo!

Unfortunately for Elen Rivas, the very same day that Olivia was styling it up in the fashion capital she was papped wearing exactly the same design – in with a bad pose and with unfortunate rogue bra strap on the loose. We do rate her candy-coloured peeptoes, though.

WINNER: Olivia’s super-polished take on this dress earns her a no-contest win.

Jessica Szohr V Irina Shayk

Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr looked cute as a button when she wore this beachy Raquel Allegra tie-dye maxi dress with a bouffant ponytail and flat sandals to an event promoting So.Be drinks.

We wonder whether Ronaldo’s squeeze, Irina Shayk, was paying attention? Just a few days later, we spotted the model wearing exactly the same dress, albeit cinched in with a silver belt and paired with a boxy white handbag and black gladiator sandals.

WINNER: Both girls have put their own stamp on this dress, but it’s Jessica’s easy, breezy summer style that does it for us.

Paris Hilton V Katie Price

Talk about a blast from the past! Paris Hilton wore this blue asymmetric Brian Lichtenberg dress to the Fox Reality Awards back in 2009, accentuating its shape with a sculptural up-do.

Katie Price probably thought enough water had passed under the fashion bridge to get away with wearing the same design – albeit in red, and with loose hair – to the Terrence Higgins Trust Gala dinner a couple of weeks ago. But nothing gets past our eagle eyes, Katie!

WINNER: Paris’ sophisticated take on the look wins hands down for us – and we’re suckers for blonde on blue.

Emma Roberts vs Laura Bailey

It’s no secret that Emma Roberts is a Chanel devotee, so we weren’t surprised to see her on the front row of the label’s spring/summer 2011 catwalk show in this classic blue tweed dress with flirty feather trim in March.

Brit model Laura Bailey followed suit (well, dress), a few months later at the Royal Academy of Arts preview at Somerset House. Like Emma, she kept her blonde locks loose and opted for a neat clutch and closed-toe platform heels to finish.

WINNER: It’s a tough one, but we think Emma just pips Laura to the prize.

Diane Kruger vs Natalie Massenet

Diane Kruger caused quite the stir in this neon lace-panelled maxi dress with contrast belt at the Liaisons au Louvre event in Paris last month. The distinctive design is by hot new name-to-know Alessandra Rich.

…But eagle-eyed style watchers will have known that already, as Net-A-Porter founder Natalie Massenet – whose online boutique is championing the label – debuted it at the Royal Academy of Arts preview at Somerset House at the beginning of June.

WINNER: The nonchalent blonde waves, the strappy blush sandals, the micro-clutch… This is a triumph for Diane.

Christina Aguilera vs. Kristen Stewart

Christina Aguilera stepped out in this asymmetric lace Valentino cocktail dress – accessorised with her usual va-va-voom armoury of bombshell tresses, red lip, full-on tan and peeptoe heels – for the 2nd Annual Mary J Blige Honors Concert in New York last month.

Proving that it’s not what you wear, it’s the way that you wear it, Kristen Stewart wore exactly the same dress in a completely different way (messy up-do, closed-toe heels, natural skintone) for a screening of Welcome To The Rileys back in October 2010.

WINNER: Kristen’s demure take on this wins hands down for us. Sorry, Xtina!

Kate Middleton vs. Lydia Bright

Kate Middleton earned Reiss’ Shola dress a gazillion column inches when it was the first post-honeymoon look she was pictured in. Oh, and she also happened to be chatting to Michelle Obama at the time. Talk about a double whammy.

Pity, then, TOWIE‘s Lydia Bright, who was snapped just a week later in the same design as she did a spot of shopping in London.

WINNER: Oh, Lydia, honey. This was one battle you were never going to win – so why even try?

Ciara vs. Kylie Minogue

For Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala earlier this year, US singer Ciara ensured all eyes were on her by keeping the lacing on her gorgeous micro mini Emilio Pucci dress loose and pairing it with lashings of diamond accessories.

Kylie, meanwhile, took a more conservative approach when she wore the same dress to a theatre opening night last month; pulling it in tighter, and adding two actual feathers for a neat styling one-two.

WINNER: Ciara, there’s no denying that you look seriously hot, but Kylie and Pucci go together like Lagerfeld and Chanel. Kylie wins!

Kate Bosworth vs. Taylor Swift

No wonder Kate Bosworth looks so pleased with herself. This lust-worthy white lace dress, which she was snapped in out and about in Colorado a few weeks ago, is a £48 Topshop treasure. The actress made a monochrome statement by adding opaque tights and killer Mulberry boots.

…But Taylor Swift had already set the sartorial standard, pairing the dress with bare legs and, ingeniously, a black tulle underskirt and belt when she was spotted in it in London the week prior.

WINNER: Taylor’s only gone and done it – out-styled the style queen herself! Ms Swift, we salute you.

Olga Kurylenko vs. Nicky Hilton

Bond girl Olga Kurylenko snapped up this stunning silver Giorgio Armani cocktail dress with origami fan detailing before taking her place on the front row of the designer’s couture show in Paris earlier this year. Who can blame her? Simple black accessories finished off the look.

Fast forward four months, and Nicky Hilton put a different spin on the dress with a strict updo and coordinating silver shoes and jewellery at the 18th Annual Race To Erase MS gala in NYC.

WINNER: There really isn’t much in this one, but we’re handing it to Olga. This dress requires some smouldering and Nicky’s look is edging prim.

Cameron Diaz vs. Pippa Middleton

Back in 2009, Cameron Diaz teamed this hot red Alexander McQueen gown with vertiginous Salvatore Ferragamo heels and an up do for the Golden Globes – and won critical approval for her bared-back, sexed up style.

So who would’ve believed that, two years later, we’d see the same dress – albeit slightly modified – sashaying down the aisle at the most celebrated royal wedding in decades? Pippa Middleton is the most unlikely style crush to have come out of the occasion (we already loved The Queen, FYI).

WINNER: It has to be Pippa. Not only was the occasion momentous, but the rear view of her in this dress is now an internet phenomenon. Respect!

Rose McGowan vs. Kate Middleton

Rose McGowan dazzled in this hot pink Issa dress at this year’s SAG awards, styling it up Studio 54-style with sexy loose waves and a chunky cuff.

Kate Middleton‘s Issa obsession is well-documented, so it’s little wonder that she was also spotted rocking the same dress before she was a married woman. Kate paired hers with a black clutch bag, diamond earrings and, unsurprisingly, a more conservative neckline.

WINNER: Tough one. But this dress was made for turning heads, so it’s Rose’s out-and-out ‘look at me!’ take on it that wins out for us.

Katherine Jenkins vs. Brooklyn Decker

Katherine Jenkins loves a bit of Victoria Beckham, so we were pleased to see that this gorgeous caramel fitted dress (which features a zip full down the back) made the cut when she attended an event at the Royal Albert Hall in March.

The dress was also the dress of choice, however, for US starlet Brooklyn Decker, who wore it to Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. Check those curves!

WINNER: While it’s impossible to choose between the girls in the dress itself, Brooklyn just edges this one on account of her shoes – Katherine’s look a little clumpy and uninspired in comparison – and that divine, directional bob.

Abbie Cornish vs. Chelsea Clinton

Aussie actress Abbie Cornish played it safe on the red carpet at the premiere of her new film, Limitless, last month. You can’t go far wrong in an LBD – especially if it’s current season Lanvin. She kept the rest of her look understated with a black clutch and heels, and a classic gold watch.

Chelsea Clinton had exactly the same idea back in December – she wore the same dress for The Clinton Foundation’s Millennium Network Event in LA with thick black tights and, interestingly, even less jewellery than Cornish.

WINNER: Congrats, Abbie! We think this dress calls for bare legs to show it off to its full potential, so you’ve got it spot on.

Christine Bleakley vs. Zara Phillips

Christine Bleakley pulled out all the stops at the premiere of her film A Turtle’s Tale, rocking this leather-trimmed Burberry trench coat – which would set you back an eye-watering £1,895, fashion fans – with black jeans and V-cut shoe-boots by Christian Louboutin.

Not normally known for her fashion cred, royal yoof Zara Phillips impressively beat Bleakley to the punch by a week, debuting the very same coat with thick black opaque tights, strappy Burberry heels, shades and a beret to the Cheltenham festival.

WINNER: You’re always going to look great in a design like this, so it’s Zara’s military-inspired super-styling does it for us. Sorry, Christine!

Rosamund Pike vs. Alexa Chung

Talk about out of this world! Rosamund Pike snaffled this Christopher Kane galaxy-print dress back in January for the New York premiere of her new film, Barney’s Version, teaming it with a simple pair of black opaques, black heels and a red carpet-ready box clutch.

Trendsetter Alexa Chung was quick to hop on the extra-terrestrial bandwagon, rocking exactly the same look – right down to the mussed-up hair and black tights – to the NME Awards last month.

Winner: It’s near impossible to separate the two – but we’re handing this victory to Rosamund for getting into the spirit with that amazing orb ring.

Kate Beckinsale vs. Amanda Peet

Kate Beckinsale wore this Nina Ricci lace confection in pink to an LA screening of Nowhere Boy last September. Keeping her hair and make-up pared back, she teamed it with simple nude peeptoes and a bronze clutch to set off her California glow.

Almost exactly six months later, Amanda Peet rocked the white version to the Independent Spirit Awards – putting a wintery spin on it by adding sheer black polka-dot tights and black peeptoe Mary-Janes.

Winner: Kate’s relaxed, sunny take on this look wins hands down for us. Amanda’s harsh black accessories, though not awful, seem to detract from the prettiness of the dress.

Lindsay Lohan vs. Kelly Osbourne

This Alexander Wang denim and leather jacket has been a mainstay in Lindsay Lohan’s wardrobe for a couple of years. Here, she gives it another airing in LA with a trusty pair of leggings and white T, accessorised with teetering brown platforms, sunnies and a panama hat.

Kelly O had the same idea earlier this month, throwing on her Wang over a white T and black trousers – but upping the glam stakes into the bargain with Monroe-esque waves and a slick of red lipstick.

Winner: Lindsay just can’t compete with sheer fashion force of Kelly’s immaculate styling. Kelly wins!

Pixie Geldof vs. January Jones

Pixie Geldof went dotty at the House Of Holland show at London Fashion Week. Literally. Never one to do things by halves, she teamed her navy wide-leg Topshop trousers with a matching blouse  - and came off looking quite fabulous, actually.

Across the pond, January Jones dressed down her Topshop purchase with black boots, a denim jacket and a plain knit as she headed to her car in LA last week.

Winner: Controversial, we know, but Pixie has wowed us here. (Though to be fair to January, probably couldn’t look bad even if she tried.)

Kate Beckinsale vs. Kim Kardashian

At last year’s Cannes Film Fesitival, Kate Beckinsale looked every inch the movie goddess as she took to the red carpet in this elaborately-pleated Nina Ricci gown. Those glossy, honey waves and chandelier drop earrings are pure A-list.

Nine months down the line reality TV hottie Kim Kardashian had the same idea, wearing the gown to a Golden Globes after party – albeit with slightly more dramatic styling in the hair and make-up department.

Winner: Kate is blowing away all the competition this month! It’s a close call, but her more natural styling gives this stunning dress more room to shine.

Olivia Palermo vs. Chloe Green

If there’s a Topshop hero piece to be had, you can guarantee that Olivia’s going to be the girl to bag it. She – somewhat controversially, it has to be said – teamed this stand-out maxi skirt with a chunky jumper and tan belt to sit front row at the London Fashion Week spring/summer 2011 shows.

…But she has competition in the way of Chloe Green, whose papa actuallyownsTopshop – tough break, Olivia. Just a day later, she stole Olivia’s style thunder by wearing the same distinctive skirt with a faux fur-shouldered jacket and long-sleeved navy T.

Winner: It’s a victory for Chloe! We see where Olivia was going with this but, when it comes to the crunch, we just don’t think she pulled it off.

Brooklyn Decker vs. Tess Daly

Brooklyn Decker took to the red carpet in Germany for her flick Just Go With It in this showstopping split-leg purple jumpsuit by Max Mara, which she teamed with strappy coral heels and a dischevelled up-do. We don’t blame her for pulling out all the stops – co-star Jennifer Aniston was also in attendance…

Proving herself to be a bit of a Max Mara obsessive, Tess Daly wore the same design to this year’s Brit Awards (it’s one of a handful of Max Mara pieces she’s been seen in of late). Here, she added a Grecian twist with a silver arm cuff and plaits, plus closed-toe silver heels.

Winner: Brooklyn gets our vote. Such a strong design calls for pared-back styling, and we can’t get enough of that colour pop at the heel.

Cheryl Cole vs. January Jones

The Versace dress Cheryl wore for the National Television Awards just a couple of weeks ago had the best of both worlds: a conservatively chic front panel, and an über-sexy, ultra-revealing cut-out back.

But this dress had already had its A-list moment, worn by January Jones to a fashion industry party back in November last year.

Winner: January’s up-do really lets the detail of this dress shine through. A rare loss for Cheryl!

Katy Perry vs. Ashanti

It was an unusually tame look for quirk queen Katy Perry, but she still looked stunning in this floor-length, metallic print Issa gown at a charity benefit in December. Loving the side-swept locks, Katy.

But, just a month before, another pop princess had already debuted the very same dress. Ashanti sported hers on the red carpet of a New York awards ceremony, with a half-up, half-down ‘do.

Winner: Since both girls steered clear of heavy accessories, it’s the hair and make-up that will win this round – and Katy’s pink lips, smoky eyes and to-die-for beachy locks are the clear victors.

Nicole Richie vs. Ellen Pompeo

It’s pretty handy designing your own collection, because it means you get to wear exactly what you want all the time! Nicole Richie was doing just that way back in 2009, when she donned this sparkly Winter Kate number with black tights and YSL heels for a New Year’s Eve party in Las Vegas.

Exactly a year later, Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo got her hands on the same dress for another Vegas party. The way she wore it? With black tights and black heels, just like Nicole!

Winner: We’d have preferred to see both ladies sans tights, but nevertheless we reckon this gold beauty fits better with Nicole’s natural, boho aesthetic than with Ellen’s. She is the designer, after all…

What do you think?

Kerry Washington vs. Kate Middleton

Gorgeous actress Kerry Washington is famed for her ultra-pretty red carpet choices – and this creamy Temperley London dress was no exception.

But there’s more than one way to wear this piece, as Princess-to-be Kate Middleton proved last Christmas matching it with a traditional blazer and sheer tights.

Winner: If this were a hair contest, Kate would win hands down, but those dated sheer tights means she loses out to Kerry in the style stakes on this one.

Claire Danes vs. Jaime Winstone

We thought this nude, criss-cross gown couldn’t get any more gorgeous when we spotted it on Claire Danes at 2004′s Costume Institute Gala…

…until Jaime Winstone rocked it even better at last year’s BAFTAs with a retro hair ‘do and strong make-up.

Winner: Jaime’s bags of attitude and daring beauty look are what won the GLAMOUR.COM girls over this time.

Audrina Patridge vs. Khloe Kardashian

Tumbling curls and a single bracelet were all the accessories Hills star Audrina Patridge needed to rock this rich red Alexander McQueen gown on the red carpet for the series’ season 4 finale in 2008.

Fast forward to last month, and fellow reality TV star Khloe Kardashian dug the same dress out of the archives for the People’s Choice Awards, this time in light dove grey.

Winner: Khloe’s colour choice was pretty, but there’s no beating Audrina’s va-va-voom red.
