Lingerie as Outerwear: Women’s Fashion Trend

The last time we saw a shift towards lingerie as outerwear was the 1980s, and while I exude a general disdain for that decade I can’t help but admit that certain fashion elements which emerged from it do have a place in this decade and the next. And so it is that we see various pieces of underwear return to the fore as outwear to feature amongst 2009 and 2010 fashion trends. And in many ways this may become one of the ubiquitous fashion trends; one that is transseasonal, and one that emerges as we pay fresh attention to tights and stockings as a feature piece, and not just an accessory, courtesy of the ripped stockings trend.

But what elements exactly? And how do women play to the racy element without going so far as to look cheap?

Stay-Ups and Suspenders

Of all the looks to emerge around underwear as outerwear, exposed stay-ups and suspenders are inarguably the most risque and the most difficult to pull off. But that hasn’t stopped the most daring of women trying, and I’ve already spotted it on the streets, in street style blogs, and on the celebrities such as Mischa Barton (see more updates on who has worn it below).

Though difficult to pull off, thanks to a come-back of patterned-stockings and tights women have a huge array of options. Take, for instance, Agent Provocateur’s snake stay-ups whose snake-motif will distract from the fact that these are indeed stay-ups.

One thing I would say in this area: avoid wearing stockings as outwear. Yes, Sienna Miller got away with it at the New York after-party of Factory Girl. But there are two points to make here: the first is that it already looks dated, the second is that she is Sienna Miller. And it’s the second point that allowed her to get away with it.

Slips and Camisoles

First emerging on the catwalks in Spring/Summer 2008, lingerie-inspired garments have their basis in corsetry. Back then bodices and boning gave way to free-flowing pieces that took, and continue to take, their inspiration from delicately feminine lingerie styles.

Slips and camisoles may just well be the best use of lingerie as outwear as their intricate detailing and light fabrics often make their quality on par with dresses one might find on the high-street. This does have the detraction of making them only suitable for the Spring/Summer seasons however.

If you’re looking to try slips and camisoles as outwear look to pair it with other fashion trends, such as the sheer fashion trend. But remember it’s a feminine look, so one that is harder to pair with heavier elements (but not impossible; it’s not too hard to envisage a slip paired off against heavier, shin length boots). If you’re looking to take inspiration from the catwalks pair the look with bold accessories, leather belts and chunky heels.

Seasons This Underwear Trend Is For

As I wrote in the introduction, lingerie and underwear is trans-seasonal and will work in both Autumn(Fall)/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons; naturally individual elements and colours will lend themselves to either/or seasons but there are no strict rules here.

Celebrity hair: blonde vs brunette

As Tulisa becomes the latest star to go from brunette to blonde, take a look at other celebrities who have made the switch.
TULISA CONTOSTAVLOS

Tulisa is the latest celebrity to turn from brunette to blonde arriving at the High Court for her sex tape scandal case with a mane of golden curls. Well, gold tinged with orange – the downside of dramatic dye-jobs. Although her hair was overly dark before, we still prefer her as a brunette, she just needs to go for a softer, more golden brown next time.

RIHANNA

Rihanna’s tried nearly every colour of the spectrum on her locks, but after a couple of months of platinum style, she unveiled her newly dark hair to a film premiere just yesterday: a vast improvement on those brassey tones, we say.

JESSICA STAM

Next up on the hair-dying scene, eternally blonde model Jessica Stam has turned to the dark side, and though her pretty face could carry almost anything off, we miss the blue-eyed blonde from before.

CRYSTAL RENN

This model just loves a change. First she goes from plus-size to sample-size, and now she’s ditched her gorgeous shiny black hair for this brassey blonde. A change too far? We think so too.

CHERYL COLE

After public X Factor humiliation and a messy divorce, Cheryl unveiled a new blonde ‘do. Ageing and yellow-y we bet her bosses at L’Oreal were shaking their heads.

AGYNESS DEYN

The cheeky Mancunian model burst onto the scene with her platinum bob and despite dalliances with jet black (and flaming red) she’ll always be a blonde in our eyes.

ABBEY LEE KERSHAW

Much as we loved her girl-next-door mouse, top model Abbey Lee’s bleached blonde tresses suit her rock-chic style.

BEYONCÉ

Any colour in the world wouldn’t taint the Queen of Cool, Beyonce.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

Oh wow… In her WAG glory days VB was a bona fide boob-y blonde, but fast forward a few years and a successful fashion label later, and Beckham’s a leading brunette. Much better.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Though Johansson’s pretty face could carry most colours, that Monroe-esque glamour looks that much better topped off with platinum curls.

CAREY MULLIGAN

Blonde? Brunette? Whichever. Everyone’s favourite actress Carey Mulligan can do no wrong in our eyes!

REESE WITHERSPOON

Experiment as she might, Reese Witherspoon will always be the ultimate blonde.

RACHEL McADAMS

Some people just have all the luck: McAdams is a total beauty both ways.

KYLIE MINOGUE

Eek! That dark brown hair is too severe for pint-sized pop princess Kylie Minogue.

KATY PERRY

A very good example of why those with dark hair should reconsider blonde: it’s called green.

CAMERON DIAZ

Though we loved Cameron’s dalliance with dark locks, she’s the ultimate beach babe and should have blonde locks to match.

JESSICA ALBA

Honey-coloured skin and luscious brown hair, Jessica Alba’s dark Latin colouring needs no messing with.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

‘The Hunger Games’ star dyed her natural blonde locks brown for her turn the film – a move which cost $30,000 – so that she she could get just the right hue of chesnut the first time around.

KATE MOSS

Time might have fooled observers into thinking supermodel Kate Moss is a natural blonde, but that is definitely not the case. Moss embraced her natural hue circa 1999.

SIENNA MILLER

The ultimate blue-eyed blonde, actress Sienna Miller experimented with dark dresses almost 10 years ago. We’re firmly in the blonde is best camp.

CHARLIZE THERON

Hollywood beauty Charlize could probably pull off green hair if she wanted to, but we’re big fans of her beachy-blonde mane.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD

Actress and style chameleon Evan Rachel co-ordinated her dye job to porcelain skin when dark, and warm foundation when blonde. We think her gothic side is the most dramatic.

DREW BARRYMORE

Youthful actress or Hollywood glamazon? Drew’s whole persona changes with a slick of the dye.

Celeb Style: 5 Styling Tips To Wear Shorts

Do you Love celeb style photos? This week, we collected celebrities wearing shorts and I attempted to figure out how they wear their hot pants for Summer 2012. The rules to adhere to when wearing shorts celebrity style are the following 5 styling tips.

1. MINIMAL TOP

Usually celebrities wear a very simple top, or a tailored jacket. Lace Shorts are one of the most important fashion accessories for celebs. Stars pull them off  by pairing lace shorts with the right blouse and shoes for their body. Add a blazer on top of a simple blouse for a more polished look.

2. RIGHT PROPORTIONS

When the shorts are tight, celebrities go with a loose blouse.

3. LESS ACCESSORIES

Celebrities do not make the look overdone with heavy jewelry or other chic accessories, especially with lace shorts that are bold enough.

4. HIGH AND LOW SHOES

Depending on the occasion celebrities wear pointy toe stilettos, wedges or ballet flats with shorts and biker boots.

In general, when wearing shorts during the day, it’s best to pair them with flats.  Model, can wear a shoe with an ankle strap, but those with shorter legs should pick something that elongates their gams. This means anything without the ankle strap, extra points for a nude-colored shoes. Boots and shorts are usually a bad idea, but this summer celebrities do wear them a lot and they do make the look bohemian celebrity chic.

5. DESIGNER BAG

Celebrities always wear a designer bag for a luxe effect.

Well, do you love those celeb styles? Try to recreate a cool look for you.

Christmas Fashion Trends 2011

Christmas is coming, so forget about cold and just think what u will wear in Christmas parties that make you appealing and stylish. Besides cold weather, today’s Christmas party dresses are turning up the heat inside. They are designed in layers and frills which keeps you both warm and chic at a same time. The stylish Christmas party dresses include lines of fashion pieces that flatter all body shapes and would create the desired dazzling effect making you outstanding for that very night.

Always remember one thing while choosing your Christmas dress it must be comfortable along with its stylishness. It must be as casual as possible unless you are told to wear formally. Keep in mind, casual here doesn’t mean your daily wear jeans and T-shirts. Comfy Christmas party dress will keep you comfortable throughout the crowdie party.

This year bustle is back in Christmas party dresses. These bustle styles is not as same as your grandma’s time, it’s a little bit more deep and stylish. You can design your bustle style with one shoulder strap, tow straps or without any strap.

Other dress style that will rule the Christmas parties is layers style, short, stacked layers in one or two colors hug the body in a fashionable strapless cocktail dress. Stylish blowy layers that boot out from the bottom of the dress give this party dress a fun and flirty look.  Layers can be the most important rule for a winter party. Dress yourself up like usual and just add some fun Christmas accessories that will make you a little chic.

Most appealing style of all is sparkles and sequins. Fully sequined short dresses v-neck lines and straps are best for your Christmas party dress.

Girl’s smart Christmas party dress trend is the corset back that laces up. Pair it with a bubble skirt or layered tulle skirt that poufs, this detail works well on a strapless dress.

If you are a little chubby and oversize or do not want to show off your sexy curves in that case a flapper or a trousers dress is just a right choice for you. It overcomes your curvy hips as well as heavy thighs and highlights your slim shoulder and will give you a smart chic look.

You can also go for a smart short prom dress for the Christmas party. Since Sienna Miller wore it for an awards ceremony, mini prom dresses has become every women choice. No wonder it is in fashion or not, it always liked by every one in every season.

Let’s talk about Christmas party dress colors; you like to wear in red or green, these are traditional colors of Xmas. If you really have no time to prepare Christmas party dress in these colors, then you can choose a black color in place of them as it is a best substitute color for any party dress. A basic black dress in satin, velvet or crepe will make you prominent amongst others. Remember to keep your Christmas party dress knee-length or street-length.

If you want to wear a sleeveless Christmas party dress, pick a pair of loose sleeves available at market.

Christmas party dress must be stylish and fashionable as Christmas came once a year. Enjoy your Christmas holidays.

Your Guide to Bohemian Style {aka Boho Chic}

Also known as boho-chic, the bohemian style seems to cycle in and out of fashion pretty regularly. I remember it being trendy when I was in high school with broomstick skirts and peasant blouses. Then, in college, caftans and fringe were the thing. And, all of this was just in the last 10 years. That’s not to mention the 60?s and 70?s when this look was super popular. Except then, the look was referred to as ‘hippie style’. So, why do we call the style ‘bohemian’?

Bohemianism first emerged in the early 19th century when artists began to move into gypsy neighborhoods in Europe. The term ‘bohemian’ refers to untraditional, antiestablishment lifestyles. For clothing, dressing bohemian means expressing your creativity and individuality. The look can be quite messy with its many layers and accessories. Some fashionistas have claimed that to pull off this look, you have to perfect that messiness by maintaining an overall balance. In other words, don’t overdo it.

Bohemian Styles

Peasant Girl

Peasant girl boho is the ultra feminine version of this style. Long, flowing skirts, angelic headbands, lace and embroidery characterize this style. Go for lighter colors and floral patterns.

Rugged Bohemian

The rugged boho style often includes distressed denim cutoffs, cowboy boots and a tunic of some sort.

Bohemian Luxe

The super chic version of the bohemian trend is the luxe look. Basically a glammed up version of the basic boho style, bohemian luxe includes maxi dresses, a mix of more modern heels and accessories and darker colors.

Bohemian Style on the Runway

As bohemian style cycles in and out of high fashion, we can always look to certain designers for the standard. Diane Von Furstenberg, Mara Hoffman, Anna Sui, Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs and Matthew Williamson have all been major players in keeping the trend stylish.

Celebrities Wearing Bohemian Style

Celebrities love to dabble in bohemian style. We’ve seen plenty wear a peasant top with denim cutoffs and cowboy boots. One celebrity who’s embraced the look (some argue she and Kate Moss created boho-chic) is Sienna Miller.

Mary Kate has also frequented the style, sometimes to the extreme. A few years ago, her style was referred to as ‘ashcan’ and ‘homeless’ (think Direlict from Zoolander).
Mischa Barton, on the other hand, has epitomized the bohemian luxe look with her angelic headbands and goddess gowns.

Basic Pieces to achieve Bohemian Style

When looking for bohemian style pieces, go for flowing, light fabrics with ethnic or floral prints, embroidery and/or fringe. Layering and accessories are key to achieve that messy, yet put together look.

Dresses

Maxi dresses, tunics and tiered dresses are all perfect examples of bohemian style dresses.

Tops

Tunics, caftans and peasant tops are the main boho tops. Most have long, full sleeves, but short sleeves work, too.

Shoes

Gladiator sandals, boots and fringed heels are the perfect shoes for a boho look.

Accessories

Accessories are a must for the boho look. Oversize sunglasses, scarves, wide leather belts, bangle bracelets and oversize jewelry are the basics.

Are you a fan of Boho Chic or Bohemian Style? Do you go all out or just wear one or two pieces?

Celeb Bags

Yves Saint Laurent Chyc Cabas: Rock the Cabas

Calling all snobs! There’s an official new “It” bag in town, from Los Angeles to New York. Noticed a suspiciously similar roomy tote hanging from the forearms of noted style-setters like Sienna Miller, Leighton Meester, Kylie Minogue, and Carla Bruni and glamorous starlets such as Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Salma Hayek?

Ah, the age-old question of what makes an “It” bag. The answer? It’s the right combination of structure and lack thereof; ease that can be appropriated to any knowing woman’s wardrobe, whether she’s ladylike or bohemian; a major statement-maker without sticking a fat logo in your face and everyone else’s.

The Chyc Cabas is an adaptable carry-all that’s a city girl’s dream: sheepskin leather in a hold-everything size, multiple pockets (two outer, an inside phone and zip), and the trademark magnetic “Y” closure that spells “Yves Saint Laurent” in a single, decorative letter. Plus, a color for every personality – the neutrals: olive-tinted sand, shiny black, grayish brown and the wilds: juicy magenta, punchy blue, and leopard. Available at Yves Saint Laurent and to be available at Saks Fifth Avenueicon, for $1,995.

Demi Moore Carries Roger Vivier “Prisme Chine” Clutch: More Color, Moore Luster

While the ever-sparkly Demi seems to age in reverse, her sense of style stays several steps ahead of the curve. By the looks of her beaming gaze and comfortable embrace with Ashton at the Urban Zen Awards in NYC on June 9th, I’m thinking love is the secret to her unyieldingly youthful appearance.

But the highlight of her simple-chic black-and-white ensemble is no enigma. Roger Vivier‘s polychromatic “Prisme Chine” ($925) clutch is an absolute piece of art. The painterly pattern is beautifully chaotic, one color being bolder than the last, and the asymmetrical golden buckle mimics the geometric shape of this prismatic bag. Leaving all else tintless (aside from her trademark Kabbalah string), her fringed white top, loose trousers, and peep-toe pumps let the shot of glorious color shine. At Roger Vivier stores.

The Row: The Golden Touch

It is no surprise the bags from The Row (named after Savile Row, a.k.a. “The Golden Mile”) are as meticulously crafted and streamlined as the ready-to-wear line. If the clothes are any indication, the Olsens are dedicated to high quality and clean lines. But I am pleasantly surprised at how well the girls are able to translate their very unique personal style to bags that work for everyone.

Ashley and Mary-Kate each brought one out for a run at the CFDA – and I went from impressed to obsessed! The proportions of these bags are amazing on petite girls, like themselves, but the shapes will work on taller snobs, too. Especially Ashley’s elongated classic lizard shoulder bag. The twins also exhibited how well these grown-up bags, designed with the eyes of wise fashion souls beyond their 24 years, can be appropriated to both sleek (as seen on Ashley in a blue dress by The Row) and opulent (Mary-Kate, wearing Chanel Pre-Fall) looks.

They have succeeded in offering us styles to fill a void in your bag wardrobe for a lifetime. I’m experiencing a mania of epic proportions over these bags! Except I’m not so crazy about the prices. Though, like The Row Ready-to-Wear, I am certain fat price tags won’t stop this bag line from flying off the shelves. Classic Shoulder Bag in Lizard, $5,450. Metal Frame Lizard Bag, $5,800.

Tod’s “Lucy” Calf Hair Clutch: Halle Takes a Walk Near the Wild Side

2011 FiFi Awards honoree Halle Berry showed off her wild side at the event in New York City last week, proving that her wild side can be rather sophisticated. While you can rely on Halle to consistently look stunning, she really nailed it – thanks in large part to her Tod’s “Lucy” clutch.

The classic Tod’s oversized buckle pochette is given a fierce makeover in slick, shiny calf hair – the heavy texture of the bag sets off her bold, cutout Halston dress. She wisely kept her makeup light and neutral, along with her single burst of oversized earrings, to avoid looking like Pebbles.

While I’m not crazy about the dress, she makes it work (few could successfully wear such a skin-skimming, ab-revealing choice), and I am in love with the clutch: soft and strong, intriguing and versatile, with skin that rings exotic for a hint of mystery.

Lucy Liu Carries Roger Vivier: In Liu of the Boring Clutch…

Make no mistake, Lucy Liu is baaaaack! And looking better than ever! I love her sensibility: never fussy, always glamorous. She proves few can work the simple shades of black and white, a belted dress, and most importantly, a Roger Vivier clutch the way she does. Making the rounds to promote her new movie “Kung Fu Panda 2″ she carried off a near-impossible feat: beguiling us from the likes of Angelina Jolie.

What could be more glam than Vivier clutches? Sure, her sleekly sophisticated yet coquettishly feminine dress and heel choices didn’t hurt – Marchesa with Jimmy Choo in LA, Antonio Berardi with Casedei in NYC, and Givenchy with Jimmy Choo at MoMA. Though it was Vivier’s clutches that finished her looks in style and really caught my eye.

The “Boite de Nuite” box clutch got double duty, showcased in two styles at the film’s premiere in LA and a MoMA dinner. No surprise: the bag is a versatile, futuristic-chic mix of resin and crocodile, hard and soft, color-blocked in contrasting hues. In New York, her black and white dress was beautifully complimented with a strong kick of color via the “Night Tube Plume” in fuchsia with scattered beading and crystal buckle.

I am having major bag envy right now, and while we’re at it, add leg envy! She looks amazing, and I’m so glad to see her in the spotlight again.

My Tod’s Special Edition Bags

Not all brands can be everything to everyone (no one is perfect, after all) but there are a special few who rarely fail me– one of them being Tod’s. Every season, I buy a Tod’s bag or two and use them to death (I am hard on my things but Tod’s bags take the beating beautifully). This year, I’m yearning for the sunny yellow limited edition D-Styling Bauletto bag ($1,665) issued for the re-opening of Tod’s South Coast Plaza boutique (only 35 made!). Each of these limited bags is embossed with “My Tod’s Special Edition” in the interior. It is exclusive to the South Coast Plaza boutique so you must call them to order (before they sell out!) 714-556-0239.

Not a fan of yellow like I am? Make like SJP and grab yourself the large Tod’s tote in white leather. Don’t worry about getting it dirty– if SJP can tote hers in the rain, to the park, WITH an eight year old boy, why should you worry about a little stain? I own a Tod’s Rodeo bag from 2002 in white leather and it is still in pristine condition (and you thought I was kidding about being a Tod’s fanatic– I remember every single Tod’s bag purchase and the year it was made). The sumptuous skins used by Tod’s is sturdy and cleans easily, even in white.

The Large Tote in White Leather retails for $1,400 at Saks Fifth Avenueicon

Milla Jovovich in Sergio Rossi

Cannes Film Festival is like the 12 days of Christmas for the fashion industry. Each day, a parade of primped and coiffed celebs glide down the runway (I mean red carpet) offering plenty of fodder for gawkers and fashion bloggers alike.

I only comment on the stand outs and today, Milla Jovovich caught my eye in an unexpected color-blocked gown from Prada. Even more intriguing, however, was the minaudiere dangling from her shoulder from Sergio Rossi. I love the long shoulder/crossbody chain trend on the red carpet– it allows one a nonchalant and elegant pose, unlike posing with a clutch (there is the football hold, the clutch it like a baby stance or dangle gingerly from your fingers– I have tried all three and trust me, equally awkward). This stunner is from Sergio Rossi‘s “Red Carpet Limited Edition Minaudiere” in Red Satin trimmed with Swarovski Crystal Butterfly Trim. Add flawless hair, bold red lips and we have a 10+ red carpet look in my book.

Marni Textured Bucket Bag: January’s Not-So-Basic Basic Bag

Versace girl January Jones is known for her sleek, simple style (and now a talked-about pregnancy!). But anyone trailing her could recognize the fine-featured blonde by her Marni bucket bag. Whether she’s dashing off to a sports event or lunching with the girls, January always has her leather bag in tow! I can see why: black totes tend to border on boring, but this embellished bucket has playful details to keep your eyes interested. All those oversized studs, so big they are pure pop art, give it depth and flavor. I’m all for girls having a trademark satchel, but maybe January would like to mix it up with Marni’s mouse-gray version shoulder version sometime? Carry on! Marni Textured Bucket Bag, at Hamrah’s for $1,715.

Sarah Jessica Parker at the Ballet Spring Gala in VBH Sueded Python Bag

Ever the trend setter, SJP attended last night’s Ballet Spring Gala 2011 with her favorite VBH sueded python origami bag effortlessly slung over her gown. I love this look! It completely changed the overtone of her outfit and made it playful and youthful. The bag is available at VBH Boutique for $1,750– 940 Madison Avenue New York 212.717.9800 Or Pre-Order at Neiman Marcus here.

Roger Vivier at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala: Roger Vivier’s Savage Beauties

Dark beauty Penélope Cruz was my Bag Snob of the evening. The dramatic feathered “Foxtrot” clutch was the perfect complement to her Oscar de la Renta gown, a silk organza, chiffon, and tulle tiered concoction of elegance that welcomed a wildly high-personality clutch. Voluminous feathers brought pageantry to a classically glamorous look.

Other savage beauties included: A monochromatic Michelle Monaghan, slinky and sensual in a fluid bubble gum dress by Derek Lam, with the “Coup de Pinceau Night” tube – the satin clutch gave her dress the angularity it demanded.

Amy Adams looked all grown up in her L’Wren Scott column gown, but far more eye-catching was the “Plumette Tube” clutch she held in her hands, not as explosively feathery as Cruz’s but equally lush.

Lastly, Livia Firth (wife to Colin) gave Roger Vivier double-time with the “Pilgrim Mini” clutch and forest-green open-Toe “Epine” pumps, bringing dynamism to her organic silk Stella McCartney gown.
