How to get a Hollywood smile?

Secrets to a high-end celebrity smile

After the ultimate A-list smile? It’s all about subtlety these days. Perfectly imperfect is the new perfect with stars eschewing the overly polished piano key look for more true-to-life dental work. And it’s not hard to figure out why: Nothing screams Z-lister more than a set of horsey tombstone veneers in the most blinding shade of white possible.

So, with this in mind, we put together the definitive guide to achieving and maintaining a beautiful high-end smile, and asked renowned cosmetic dentist Dr Joe Oliver of London’s prestigious Welbeck Clinic for some extra pointers. Dr Oliver is the UK’s go-to person for super-sophisticated dentistry, having created exquisite natural-looking smiles for English roses Helena Bonham Carter and Sophie Ellis-Bexter.

Those impossibly white in-yer-face chompers flashed by the likes of UK reality star Chloe Sims are so last decade. New gen porcelain veneers are expertly crafted to look as natural as possible, with some master ceramicists even incorporating slight discolourations, textured grooves and other subtle flaws to maximise the non-artificial effect. The one-size-fits-all approach is a no-no; customisation is key. ‘All the veneer treatments I carry out are bespoke depending on the patient’s wants and needs,’ says Dr Oliver. ‘You design your own smile using cosmetic imaging, leaving you with a natural-looking smile that suits you.’

An oddly uneven gum line can really let down a decent set of gnashers. Enter laser gum sculpting. It can transform a gummy grin into a winning smile, whether carried out in conjunction with couture veneers or simply to enhance the natural pearlies. Quick, easy and virtually painless, a laser is used to sculpt and shape the gum line, revealing more of the teeth. Several stars, including Demi Moore and LeAnn Rimes, have fixed their gummy smiles thanks to this clever treatment.

At the opposite end of the scale, a long-in-the-tooth smile is ageing and can look decidedly horsey. A receding gum line can also cause painful sensitivity and may be a symptom of gum disease. Gingival grafting is the latest procedure to sort it out, boasting both clinical and cosmetic benefits. The periodontist removes a small piece of gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and transplants it to the area where the gums are receding. The treatment doesn’t come cheap, but we reckon it’s worthwhile given its oral health advantages.

Cheryl Cole wore hers for two years and the showbiz world’s most powerful from Oprah to Tom Cruise swear by theirs: a set of Invisalign invisible braces is the stealthy celeb solution for crooked teeth. Barely noticeable, especially compared with those old-school metal monstrosities, the aligners are removed daily for optimum dental hygiene. The only drawback would appear to be the hefty price tag.

Forget the standard scale and polish. If you’re looking for one of the best ways to restore natural whiteness, make like the A-list and book yourself in for a luxury AirFlow polish. Available at most high-end dental practices nationwide, this ultra-effective treatment uses a combination of pressurised water, bicarbonate of soda and jets of air to blast stains to oblivion. End result: gorgeous, gleaming, naturally white pearlies.

An AirFlow Polish will work wonders removing surface stains but it won’t permeate the enamel to tackle deeply ingrained staining. Cue in-office and at-home teeth whitening. Treatments are ubiquitous these days but for stunning A-list results, it’s best to go for the gold standard. ‘To get that sought after celebrity smile, I would recommend Zoom! whitening,’ says Dr Oliver. Philips Zoom! WhiteSpeed is the premium option. A dentist-only treatment, it combines potent peroxide whitening with LED technology to brighten teeth up to eight shades in under an hour.

DIY teeth whitening may not be as thorough and effective as an in-office treatment, but it’s a great option of you’re on a budget or in need of a quick touch-up. You’ll get the best results by opting for a safe, high-quality Carbamide peroxide gel such as Polanight and following the instructions to the letter. Your choice of tray is crucial – a snug fit is essential to avoid leakage. Custom-made is best but expensive. Opt for the next best thing and bag some disposable Dentrafit trays. Made from special dental wax, they mimic custom trays by moulding to the exact shape of the teeth for a perfect fit.

Maintaining that A-list smile is a cinch with the right toothbrush. ‘I recommend one that uses sonic pulses, such as Philips Sonicare,’ says Dr Oliver. We like the Sonicare Healthy White. It’s far more effective than a manual brush at removing plaque and It can whiten teeth by up to two shades in just two weeks. If you’re feeling flush, snap up the deluxe Sonicare DiamondClean. Packed with swish features, it’s proven to brighten teeth in just one week.

The ultimate showbiz smile calls for the ultimate whitening toothpaste. Dr Oliver is a fan of Janina, which has also garnered a firm celeb following and endorsements from BBC’s Watchdog programme and Health Which? magazine. The only toothpaste on the market that actually whitens teeth – others brands are mere stain-removers apparently – its unique formula contains natural fruit enzymes for daily enamel-safe whitening.

Globe-trotting celebs just don’t have the time to floss and it’s not something they can delegate to a minion unfortunately. Therein lies the appeal of the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser. This handy contraption is clinically proven to be up to 93% more effective than dental floss at improving gum health. It pumps out jets of highly pressurised water to blast away debris and bacteria between the pearlies and below the gum-line. A quick once-over at the end of each day should really improve your oral hygiene.

Suri Cruise is world’s most stylish child

Suri Cruise has been named the world’s Most Stylish Child, beating thelikes of Ivy Blue Carter, Harlow Madden and Harper Beckham.

The six-year-old girl – daughter of Tom Cruise and his estranged wife Katie Holmes – topped a poll by family-gifting site twistedtwee.co.uk, as organisers were impressed with her stunning wardrobe, which includes lots of dresses and mini high-heels.

Suri – whose wardrobe is rumoured to be worth $2 million – beat Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z’s baby daughter, Blue Ivy, into second place while Will and Jada Smith’s girl, Willow, came third.

Harlow Madden – daughter of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – was fourth, and David and Victoria Beckham’s first girl, Harper Seven, was fifth.

Twisted Twee owner Suzi Warren said: ”Aliens and pocket-sized papas haven’t hindered Suri in becoming the world’s most stylish sprog. She was head and tiny shoulders above all over the other celeb children in our poll.

”Although, we were alarmed by how low down Posh’s wee sprog came in our poll. She’s incapable of smiling at the best of times, so we dread to see the look on Victoria’s face when she hears about our nationwide findings.”

Other celebrity offspring to make the list included Max Anthony, Jayden Smith and Coco Arquette.

Hollywood’s 25 most powerful stylists

The Hollywood Reporter’s 25 most powerful stylists and some of their main clients:

(Relaxnews) – After stars including Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams topped best dressed lists during awards ceremony season, the women behind their looks rate highly in an annual ranking by US publication The Hollywood Reporter (THR) of the industry’s 25 most powerful stylists –which this year excludes fashion mogul Rachel Zoe.
After evaluating factors such as clients, visibility during awards season and breadth of influence, THR cites Kate Young, whose patrons include Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, as this year’s most powerful stylist.

The latter wore red Louis Vuitton to the Academy Awards last month and came second in a Twitter best dressed list, according to data based on tweets sent regarding the awards ceremony with the hashtag #BESTDRESSED. Jessica Chastain topped the poll with her black and gold Alexander McQueen dress, although her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who also dresses Viola Davis, Freida Pinto and Jennifer Lawrence, came in fourth place in THR’s list.
Meanwhile, Emma Stone, who impressed at the Oscars in a bow-detail Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown, is styled by Petra Flannery — who takes third place in THR’s compilation. Last year Rachel Zoe, who gained attention in the early 2000s due to her work with the likes of Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie and Keira Knightley, topped THR’s most powerful stylist list. This year Zoe doesn’t feature on the rundown, although this exclusion is explained in an article by THR’s Shirley Halperin.
“Because her success has been so beyond what anyone thought a stylist could achieve, THR decided to recuse her from this year’s list,” wrote Halperin of the stylist who has become a television star and boasts her own multimillion-dollar fashion empire.
The ladies on this year’s list are breaking into the design world too though — Young last year teamed up with designer Lynne Hiriak for the knitwear line Cardigan by Kate Young and Leslie Fremar created a capsule line of basics for Fruit of the Loom.

Celebs Dissed for Their ‘Dos

When a celebrity changes up their look, everyone has an opinion about it — and they’re not all complimentary! Check out the hairstyles that taught Emma Watson, Keri Russell, Brad Pitt, and more this lesson firsthand.

As filming of the eight-part “Harry Potter” movie franchise came to an end in the summer of 2010, actress Emma Watson, now 21, was quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most stylish starlets. It was only natural then that the British beauty, who had kept her locks long for 10 years to play Hermoine Granger, wanted to experiment with her hair once she was free to do so. But while she was excited for the change, some people were confused by her new, cropped cut. “I had journalists asking me if this meant I was coming out, if I was a lesbian now,” Watson explained to The Independent. “That haircut did make me realize how subjective everyone’s opinion is. Some people were crazy for it and some people just thought I’d lost my s—. All I can do is follow my instincts, because I’ll never please everyone.” FYI — we’re big fans of it, Emma!

Like dozens of teen idols before him, Justin Bieber had a signature song, the sugary sweet “Baby,” and a look that included a perfectly executed hairstyle known as “the Bieber. The singer, who just turned 18, made millions of girls swoon with his shaggy, pushed-to-the-side strands from the time he hit the scene in 2009. (He also came to be rapidly mocked for the look.) As he’s aged — can you believe he’s an adult now? — Biebs has sported slicked-back hair, spiked hair, and he’s even dyed it, but we’ll always remember his first coif.

Pop princess Britney Spears was known for flipping around her long blond locks as she danced seductively on stage. That’s why everyone was in complete shock when she suddenly shaved her head in February 2007. Even fans who disapproved of her scandalous behavior in the months leading up to the unexpected salon session realized then that something was very wrong with the “Toxic” songstress. By the following January, Brit had to be taken by ambulance from her home after refusing to hand her two young sons over to her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, and put on an involuntary psychiatric hold at UCLA Medical Center for a week. She also entered into a conservatorship in which her father was given control of all her affairs that continues to this day. The good news, of course, is that despite all the craziness that she’s been through, the 30-year-old is back on top when it comes to her career, thanks to her successful Femme Fatale album.

Sure, Brad Pitt delivered an Oscar-nominated performance in “Moneyball,” but everyone knows the real reason fans liked it so much is that it we got to see a fresh-faced Brad. The baseball flick marked one of the rare times the actor has been seen sans scruff (or without an even longer Rip Van Winkle-esque beard) in the last few years. Part of it’s undoubtedly the influence of Brad’s partner Angelina Jolie, who’s said she “loves Brad in any state,” beard or no beard. Aww!

Call it a coincidence, but we say actress Michelle Williams’ transition from a cutie on “Dawson’s Creek” to an oh-so chic three-time Oscar nominee had a lot to do with her decision to opt for a super-cropped, sophisticated cut in May 2010. Still, the “My Week With Marilyn” star explained that not everyone is gaga for it. “The only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends,” she confessed to Elle UK in December. “Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I [first] cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it.” The straight man was, of course, Heath Ledger — the 31-year-old’s former flame and the father of her daughter — who died in 2008.

Michelle Williams’ “Dawson’s Creek” co-star, Katie Holmes, 33, has also faced backlash for a style choice. Suri’s mom created some controversy in 2008 when she transformed her long, dark tresses into a dramatic chin-length bob with bangs. While some argued it was tres chic and signaled a new era for the actress, others chalked it up to one more questionable move she had made since her 2006 marriage to mega-star Tom Cruise. “When fame happens, a lot of people think you’re changing,” Holmes has said. Do you think Katie’s hair changes were for the better?

Years from now, when the WB’s beloved series “Felicity” is just a footnote in the annals of pop culture history, the main character’s bold decision to chop off her long curly locks as a way to start over after a breakup in September 1999 will still be remembered. It was such a big deal at the time that the network president admitted that it “turned some audience away” and caused a drop in the ratings. Still, at least one person was happy with the style switch: Keri Russell, the actress who played the college sophomore in the show’s title. “I think it was a brave, crazy, sudden, extreme thing to do, but those are all things a girl in college are, and I think it was quite appropriate,” Russell said. “For me [as a person], that long hair is how I was identified. So, it was nice to be out of that. It was good and liberating for me.”

Rarely has the world been so divided over than it was over whether Robert Pattinson’s dissheveled hair was super sexy or just sloppy. Shrieks from the many fans of the “Twilight” franchise proved that they, of course, thought the former, while the rest of us just thought he should take a shower. The 25-year-old really shook things up then when he shaved his head in January. Now he doesn’t have to worry about washing his hair at all!

Celebs always color their hair when they want to change up their looks, but Kelly Osbourne, 27, truly shocked us this year when she opted to dye her locks a purplish gray hue — a color many people dye their hair to hide! “I think that I have an addiction to dying my hair, because I always like it to be different,” the “Fashion Police” judge has said. “I don’t like being compared to other people.” We admire your individuality, Kelly, but this particular look just doesn’t do it for us!

Oh, what some actors will do for the love of the craft! Vanessa Hudgens, 23, might have gotten her start in the cutesy Disney movie “High School Musical,” but that doesn’t mean she’s not serious about her performances. In fact, the bohemian babe, who usually leaves her dark hair long and wavy, hacked off her precious locks herself to film the upcoming movie “Gimme Shelter,” in which she plays a pregnant, homeless teen. Since the change was for work, not by choice, it didn’t receive much criticism from fans. Oddly enough, it was Vanessa herself who panned it. “Honestly, I kind of feel like a soccer mom, but we’re going to let that go,” she told “Access Hollywood” in July 2011. “There’s nothing wrong with soccer moms, but I’m only 22! I miss [my hair,] believe me, I do, but there’s nothing I can do about it.” Well, at least it’ll grow back, right?

Yikes. Like most of us, Rumer Willis’ decision to go for an ultra-cropped, bleach-blond ‘do in September 2008, is probably one of those mistakes of her youth the 23-year-old would like to forget … or at least we’d like to forget that hair nightmare. For whatever reason, Rumer claimed she actually liked the look at the time, which was inspired by her “House Bunny” role that required a blond wig. “I always find that whenever I’m doing something big in my life, I want to change the hair,” she told People. After making several bad celebrity hair lists, we’re just happy Rumer eventually switched back to being a brunette!

Remember when Kate Gosselin was just a reality show mom? Of course, that was before she was well known for much more, including her nasty high-profile split with Jon, her reported diva-esque behavior on “Dancing With the Stars” and alleged plastic surgery. No, back then, Gosselin was most disliked for her crazy spike of hair that was even made into a Halloween costume! The mommy of eight finally ditched the look in early 2010, replacing it with extensions in a process that took 20 hours. The only problem? Kate took a while to warm up to it, saying “it’s weird” in an online video she posted about the change. Whatever you say, Kate! Since she kept the look, it appears the new ‘do eventually grew on her!

2012 Oscar Parties

Hollywood’s hottest strut their stuff at this year’s star-studded Oscar parties.

Jennifer Lopez turned heads on the Oscars red carpet in a plunging, silver Zuhair Murad gown, but the diva extraordinaire looked even better at the annual Vanity Fair afterparty in yet another revealing Murad masterpiece. Luckily — at the post-ceremony soiree — J.Lo didn’t suffer a second slip. Her first frock may have showcased a bit too much skin, but her encore ensemble was utter perfection.

Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes — who debuted a new, bang-enhanced ‘do — partied the night away with Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and her hubby, soccer star/underwear model, David.

Also photographed entering the Vanity Fair fete was former Disney darling, Miley Cyrus, who channeled Old Hollywood in a glamorous Roberto Cavalli gown, chandelier earrings, ruby-red lips, and a classic coif.

No, this isn’t a mugshot. Last year’s Oscar co-host James Franco just looked like a vagrant at the Mercedes-Benz viewing party at Soho House in West Hollywood, CA.

Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio and reality “star” Kourtney Kardashian showed off their growing baby bumps at Elton John’s yearly shindig.

Tennis aces Serena and Venus Williams (both in Christiane King) hung out with fellow sports superstar, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

“SNL’s” Jason Sudeikis was caught canoodling with his lady love, “Tron” hottie Olivia Wilde. That’s one lucky man!

Steve Martin and Martin Short made a Gwyneth Paltrow sandwich, not that she eats sandwiches … or eats anything solid for that matter.

Golden Globe winner Claire Danes (“Homeland”) looked like a delicious snowcone in her strawberry-hued Valentino dress.

Katy Perry — whose tired blue hairdo has got to go — sparkled in Blumarine, while Dita Von Teese shimmered in Jenny Packham.

Michael Douglas and his proud papa, Kirk, arrived in style at the VF festivities.

Kim opted for a gothic look in Alaia. Her sister, Kourtney, went Grecian in a Raoul gown, and both Kardashians nearly disappeared standing next to the super sexy Heidi Klum, who put them both to shame in her Versace mini and Louboutin pumps.

David Furnish and Elton John accessorized with their son, baby Zachary.

Miley clung to her boy toy, Liam Hemsworth, as they sashayed their way into Elton’s event.

What do you make of the strapless white Roberto Cavalli gown “Modern Family” minx Sofia Vergara wore to the Vanity Fair party? Hot or not?

Nina Dobrev (in J. Mendel) and her “Vampire Diaries” co-star/boyfriend Ian Somerhalder (in Armani) easily made for one of the evening’s most stylish couples!

Best Actor winner, Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), looked sleepy, happy, and quite possibly buzzed next to his new trophy.

Party girls Cameron Diaz (in Victoria Beckham) and Kate Hudson (in vintage Versace) looked like they were having more fun than any other celebs in attendance at the VF fete. Perhaps the open bar had something to do with that.

Comedian Chris Rock caught up with his pal, 85-year-old Oscar winner Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field”), who looked sharp in his tux.

We’re not feeling Katie’s bangs or Natalie’s dress, are you?

We’ll look past Gwen Stefani’s questionable frock (“I’m walking into spiderwebs… “), but we can’t forgive her for the catastrophic coif she sported at the Elton John party.

We’re not sure why or how, but former “High School Musical” hotties Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale somehow landed invites to Elton’s jamboree.

Is the bold color combo Rosario Dawson rocked working for you? We secretly love it.

Do you prefer the Giambattista Valli dress Emma Stone wore to the Oscars, or this one, which was designed by Chanel?

Gerard Bulter put his grubby paws on Jessica Chastain at the Vanity Fair party. She should know better than to mingle with the infamous ladies man.

Joan Collins looks great for 78, and Victoria Beckham looks grumpy for 37.

Brett Ratner was supposed to produce the 84th Academy Awards with Don Mischer, but was asked to step down after delivering disparaging remarks about gays and actress Olivia Munn. Why, then, would swimsuit model Kate Upton hang out with such a fool? Ick.

“Avatar” star Zoe Saldana channeled her inner “Dynasty” vixen in an ’80s-inspired Marios Schwab frock.

Busy Philipps was once again BFF Michelle Williams’ date for the evening. Love this dynamic duo!

“Transformers” star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley snuggled up to her man, action hero Jason Statham, at the bar.

Amy Adams looked terrified of Tim Tebow … and he looked either sunburned, embarrassed, or sauced.

Elizabeth Banks’ dress, designed by Chadwick Bell, was one of our absolute favorites. Thoughts?

Salma Hayek’s YSL dress was nothing to write home about. Her braid, however, was quite cute.

Elizabeth Olsen kept things relatively simple in an all-black ensemble from Christian Dior.

Also spotted in all-black was “Once Upon a Time” star Ginnifer Goodwin, who donned this fashion-forward getup.

Would you want to party with Miley and Kelly Osbourne?

Or, would you prefer to party with Zach Galifianakis, Rachael Harris, and Cheryl

“Modern Family’s” Julie Bowen got photobombed by Leslie Mann upon arriving at the VF party.

Bradley Cooper’s ‘stache … yay or nay?

Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller took advantage of the complimentary photo booth.

Ladies Night, featuring: Amy Adams, Jennifer Westfeldt, Claire Danes, and Paula Patton!

Natalie Portman and baby daddy Benjamin Millepied must have found a sitter for little Aleph, who was born back in June.

We didn’t think it was possible, but Shailene Woodley (“The Descendants”) looked even worse at the Vanity Fair party than she did on the Oscars red carpet.

From the neck up, Tina Fey looked better than ever thanks to a chic updo, but her Carolina Herrera gown was a bit baggy.

Do you think Tom instructs Katie to tilt her head in every picture in order for him to seem less petite?

Kate Beckinsale has never failed us … until last night in this seaweed-covered eyesore.

Gwyneth actually looked good next to Jane Fonda, whose dress was clearly inspired by the Ice Capades.

“Parks and Recreation” star Rashida Jones looked yummy in yellow. Mustard is one of this season’s hottest trends.

Cam changed into a Popsicle-hued Victoria Beckham-designed gown for the party circuit. Discuss!

Brooklyn Decker partied at Elton John’s soiree sans hubby, tennis star Andy Roddick, who was prepping for a tournament.

LOVE Patricia Clarkson. HATE her dress and shoe combo. So much.

Diane Kruger (“Inglourious Basterds”) vamped it up in a slinky red gown and high pony.

Chace Crawford could really use a new haircut. His suit, however, looked mighty fine.

Mary Steenburgen does not age! Her hubby, Ted Danson, does.

“227″ alum Regina King delivered some fierceness as she made her way into the star-studded Vanity Fair fete.

Can we all just agree that Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are kinda the coolest couple in Hollywood? Because they are.

“Glee’s” Dianna Agron opted for a beachy, sun-kissed look for the Elton party, and it suited her well.

Agron’s co-stars, Ashley Fink and Chris Colfer, posed for this hilarious “candid” when photographers decided to invade their conversation.

Rachael Harris — who also looked lovely on the purple carpet at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards — delivered a second consecutive win, this time in vintage Lanvin.

Fran Drescher accessorized with her furry little friend, Pomeranian Ester.

Rachel Zoe looked alarmingly thin in a white maxi dress and faux fur wrap.

Abbie Cornish oozed elegance in a simple yet chic sheath and diamond accents.

Kate Bosworth usually looks like a hot mess on the red carpet, but we actually approve of this Prabal Gurung dress. Do you?

Rose McGowan flaunted her fab frame in a Paule Ka gown and unseen Sergio Rossi heels at Elton’s bash.

Yep, I’m showcasing the Williams sisters again. Why? Because I love them, and they had fun dressing in bold gowns, unlike so many of Hollywood’s uptight elitists.

Tiiiiiiiiiiiin roof, rusted.

What was Mena Suvari thinking?! It looks like she slathered herself in glue and rolled around in a pile of shredded Kleenex.

Minnie Driver reigned supreme in a champagne-colored gown and diamond baubles. Call us crazy, but we think she was one of the best-dressed beauties of the entire evening.

Emily Watson was all smiles upon arriving at the annual VF party in a black frock, curly ‘do, and layered necklaces.

Paz Vega outdressed Petra Nemcova at the Elton party. In fact, Vega outdressed nearly everyone who stepped foot in that fete.

Felicity Jones — who was robbed of an Oscar nom for her work in “Like Crazy” — dressed to impress in a fashionable Johanna Johnson dress and minimal makeup.
