Less known facts about Pangolin

Pangolins are unique and intriguing creatures with some lesser-known facts that set them apart:

  1. Scaly Armor: Pangolins are the only mammals with scales made of keratin, the same material as human nails. These scales provide protection against predators, and they can curl into a tight ball when threatened.
  2. Diet and Feeding: Pangolins are specialized insectivores, primarily feeding on ants and termites. They have long, sticky tongues that can extend up to 16 inches to capture their prey, allowing them to reach deep into nests.
  3. No Teeth: Instead of teeth, pangolins rely on their hard scales and strong stomach muscles to grind up the insects they consume. They often swallow small pebbles to aid in digestion.
  4. Variety of Species: There are eight species of pangolins, divided between Africa and Asia. Each species has adapted to different habitats, from forests to grasslands.
  5. Solitary Behavior: Pangolins are generally solitary animals. They have a keen sense of smell and are mostly nocturnal, foraging for food at night.
  6. Unique Defense Mechanism: When threatened, pangolins can excrete a foul-smelling substance from their glands as an additional defense mechanism, alongside their ability to curl into a ball.
  7. Conservation Status: All eight species of pangolins are threatened, primarily due to poaching for their scales and meat. They are among the most trafficked mammals in the world.
  8. Cultural Significance: In some cultures, pangolin scales are used in traditional medicine, and their meat is considered a delicacy, further contributing to their decline.

These facts highlight the pangolin’s unique adaptations, behaviors, and the significant challenges they face in the wild!
