The bearded man\u2014his name was Dale, she\u2019d learned\u2014on her left. Three others whose names she\u2019d already forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena took a breath. \u201cThank you for joining me. I know this is early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re farmers,\u201d Marta said. \u201cEarly is relative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m saying it\u2019s trusting a single source of truth. And that source has already been compromised\u2014multiple times.\u201d Lena pulled up the blockchain analysis Caleb had sent. \u201cThe same pattern appears across dozens of other contracts. \u201cWhat if the providers collude?\u201d the young woman asked. \u201cWhat if three of them agree to lie?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena nodded. That was the right question. \u201cThat\u2019s the aggregation dilemma. More sources help, but they don\u2019t solve the underlying problem. If an attacker can control a majority of the sources, the median is whatever they want it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dale threw up his hands. \u201cSo we\u2019re back where we started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot exactly.\u201d Lena pulled up a third slide. The Sybil Problem.<\/strong> \u201cThe attacker doesn\u2019t even need to control real providers. They can create dozens of fake identities\u2014fake sensors, fake APIs, fake everything\u2014and report the same false data. To the smart contract, it looks like a hundred independent witnesses all saying the same thing. But it\u2019s just one person wearing a hundred masks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marta\u2019s face tightened. \u201cHow do we stop that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou make it expensive to create fake identities. You require each source to post a bond\u2014a stake\u2014that they lose if they\u2019re caught lying. The cost of creating a hundred fake sources becomes a hundred bonds. If the bond is high enough, the attack becomes too expensive to attempt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut who decides what\u2019s a lie?\u201d the young woman asked. \u201cWho judges?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena hesitated again. \u201cThat\u2019s the other half of the problem. I don\u2019t have a complete answer yet. But I\u2019m working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council exchanged glances. Marta\u2019s expression was unreadable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou said you had a week,\u201d Dale said. \u201cIt\u2019s been two days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m using them,\u201d Lena said. \u201cBut I need you to understand the scale of what we\u2019re facing. This isn\u2019t just about your contract. There\u2019s someone out there\u2014the Truth Broker\u2014who\u2019s been exploiting these vulnerabilities for years. Millions of credits stolen. And they\u2019re getting bolder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pulled up the NexusLend article. \u201cThree days ago, a lending platform lost millions in a flash crash. Single price oracle. False data. Liquidations cascading through the system. That\u2019s the future if we don\u2019t fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young woman read the headline. Her eyes widened. \u201cThat\u2019s\u2026 that\u2019s a lot of money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s just the beginning,\u201d Lena said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marta was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, \u201cThe DAO can\u2019t pause payouts indefinitely. Farmers need insurance. If we don\u2019t provide it, they\u2019ll go somewhere else. Somewhere with less security, probably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen don\u2019t pause,\u201d Lena said. \u201cBut don\u2019t trust the current oracle either. Manually review every payout request until the new system is ready. It\u2019s inefficient, but it\u2019s safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cManual review takes time,\u201d Dale objected. \u201cFarmers need money fast after a hailstorm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFarmers need honest<\/em> money,\u201d Lena shot back. \u201cNot payouts that get stolen by someone who knows how to lie to a sensor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut. Marta raised a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEnough. Lena, you\u2019ve given us a lot to think about. We\u2019ll implement manual review for thirty days. That gives you time to build your solution. After that\u2026\u201d She spread her hands. \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena nodded. \u201cThirty days. I\u2019ll have something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call ended. The screens went dark. Lena sat alone in the study room, the smell of old paper suddenly oppressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
