CHRONOGRAB
THE GRAND ORRERY SALVAGE RUNNER

OPENING THE CASE
Beneath the city there is a clock that nobody wound. It has been running since before the streets above it were drawn, and it is enormous enough to walk around in. You are standing on its face — the dial is the floor, the Roman numerals are twelve metres tall, and everything the movement has ever shaken loose is still drifting through the gearworks above your head. You have a grapple line, an hourglass that is not yours, and one very good trick.

CHRONOGRAB seals a full-face chrono mask over your sensors and drops you into the interior of a cathedral-sized grand orrery. Brass busbars of gear teeth turn in the dark overhead. A pendulum the length of a mast swings past the far wall on a beat you can feel in your boots. A brass orrery orbits the central arbor with three lit planets on the ends of its arms, and moonlight comes in through one high window and lies across the dial in a pale shaft. Salvage floats through all of it — brass cogs, ruby jewels, mainspring coils, chrono gears, bulwarks, oil flasks, grand complications, spare springs, chime bars — and there is exactly one way to bank any of it: put your reticle on it and fire the grapple line.

⧗ THE HEADLINE MECHANIC — CHRONO SURGE
Every part you bank charges the CHRONO meter — three points a pickup, twenty-five for a Chrono Gear, eight for disarming a mine. At one hundred percent the meter blazes and you press X. The entire clockwork world drops to 28% speed for four and a half seconds while you keep moving at full speed, and every single point you earn in that window pays ×3. The pendulum hangs in mid-swing. The gear trains crawl. The mainspring clock itself slows down, so a well-timed surge also buys you air. Empty a full hold into frozen time at a ×12 chain and you are not playing a scavenger game any more — you are printing money inside a stopped second.

◆ AIMING YOU NEVER HAVE TO THINK ABOUT
The reticle is your cursor. The system pointer is hidden, so there is no gap between where you point and where you hit. The instant the reticle touches a part a 3D ring snaps around it and the brackets flare open — and that ring is drawn at precisely the radius the grapple test uses, so the ringed object is always the object you collect. Then hold the button down. Holding re-fires the line four and a half times a second at wherever the reticle currently sits, so sweeping across a shelf of drifting gearwork vacuums the entire shelf while the ring hops part to part. During a Chrono Surge the ring and the beam both turn ice-blue, so you always know the ×3 window is open.

Your timer is the mainspring. It runs down constantly and the only way to buy more is to keep working: every brass cog you bank trickles a fraction of a second back into the barrel and a Mainspring Coil dumps +6 whole seconds in. Play well and a single chamber runs almost forever; stand still for ten seconds admiring the gearwork and the HUD starts bleeding red. When the spring empties the clock stops, you lose a spring from your belt, and you re-run the same chamber with your haul intact. Five spare springs per run.

Everything in a live movement is both a hazard and a payday. A Gear Mine costs you a spring on contact — and pays a fortune if you line it and disarm it instead, plus eight points straight onto your chrono meter. Quickstep through a Chronarch’s spinning gear-shuriken and you parry it for five-figure points plus real damage to the boss. Chain any two pickups inside 4.5 seconds and the CHIME CHAIN climbs: ×2, ×3, ×5, ×8, all the way to a ×12 multiplier at sixty links. Multiply chain by surge by complication by a Gold Regent’s crown and a single ruby jewel can out-earn an entire early chamber.

Every fifth chamber, the movement wakes up. A CHRONARCH unfolds above the arbor — THE TIMEKEEPER, ESCAPEMENT PRIME, HOROLOGIAX, THE OVERWOUND, PENDULUM KING, ANNUS FUGIT, ETERNAL MOVEMENT — a colossal gilt dial with a lamp-bright eye at its centre, four counter-rotating rings, two jointed brass arms and a swarm of gear shards orbiting its bezel. It throws spinning shuriken, detonates expanding time pulses along the floor that you have to jump or quickstep, and looses clockwork automatons to run you down while you sprint for Winding Keys — the only thing that reaches an escapement. Drop it below half and it OVERWINDS: faster volleys, double pulses, more summons. Stop it and the bounty lands in slow motion worth chamber × 60,000.

Five chrono masks hang on the bench and each one is a genuine build rather than a paint job. HOROLOGIST stretches your grapple line a fifth further. IRON BELLRING is belltower plate — a sixth spring, a free bulwark and ten percent more mainspring, paid for in speed and a tax on your haul. SWIFT COURIER is an oiled runner’s shell, twenty-six percent faster with a shorter quickstep. RUST PROPHET pays +42% on everything while quietly draining the clock ten percent quicker. GOLD REGENT is the sovereign dial crown: +68% value, four springs, eighteen percent less mainspring — pure greed for thieves who simply do not get hit. Whichever you seal into becomes your literal point of view, down to the tiny working clock face etched into the frame.

The tower goes on for a very long way. 120 hand-tuned chambers across twelve decks — Pendulum Vault, Escapement Gallery, Brassworks, Moonphase Atrium, Chime Chamber, Oil Cisterns, Astronomy Orrery, Midnight Belfry, Rust Ward, Crystal Regulator, Void Dial and the Eternal Movement — each one recolouring the entire machine around you, from the ivory of the dial and the brass of the gear trains to the ambient light, the dust in the shaft and how much of the chamber is still lit at all. Bank one to three stars per chamber, unlock the next node on the tower map, and keep descending into infinite escalation past 120. When the last spring finally gives out, the real competition begins: enter your horologist name, choose your flag, and your haul goes into the Global Top 100 against thieves from everywhere.
